  1. Hi uprights, I've put new nylon strings onto my double bass recently and I'm finding intonation a lot more difficult than when I had steels strings. Now I haven't played very much in the last year for various reasons, so it could very well be my technique has fallen behind a bit, but can intonation be different on different sets of strings? thanks
  2. 😍 I love the look of these basses. GLWTS
  3. interesting... sounds similar to something the Cali76 Compact Bass does. It has a high-pass filter so the compressor doesn't affect the low frequencies.
  4. I'm probably only thinking about this because of lockdown and I'm bored, but I've been contemplating building a pedalboard just for a deep dub/reggae sound. One of my bands plays a mix of ska, latin, Afrobeat and on occasion we drop into a dub/reggae breakdown. So far I've been doing it all with the tone knob and my hands (playing up the fretboard or muting). I have a Moog Low Pass Filter I've taken off my regular board (replaced with the space friendly Proton) and I figure if I get a decent compressor, power supply and switcher pedal (the Moog is not true bypass) I have myself a beefy dub tone. Anyone know anything else/better that might contribute to this?
  5. don't you mean... valve-sniffery?
  6. I did get a little obsessed with valve shopping yesterday so part of me now just wants to buy fancy ones and replace them myself! The stock tubes are Ruby, which are apparently re-branded Shuguang valves from China. A valve savvy friend said to avoid the Chinese ones. Don't know if anyone agrees or knows better?
  7. I'm sending it back, they're going to have a look and replace the valves
  8. Got the new cable, made no difference. I did a bit of research into microphonic tubes and that seems to line up with the sound I'm getting. I decided to take the cage off to check. I tapped all the valves and ALL of them apart from one are microphonic!
  9. can anything be done about it if it is that? I've looked and I think there's springs in the housings of the preamp valves.
  10. Its coming through the speaker. I'm waiting til the cable arrives (hopefully today) in case its anything to do with that, but I'll try that first if it continues. As I said in the OP, when DI'd there's no interference/static.
  11. Hi there BCers I just took delivery of the PF-50t today, an amp I've lusted after for years. I plugged it in and I love the sound of it, and it seems like it'll be plenty loud enough for any of my gigs. However, it's got a weird, rattle or resonance or static or interference or something when I play a C. It's very quiet, I have to listen for it. I've set the bias according to the manual, and I've plugged both the DIs into my laptop and they're absolutely silent (this implies to me that the tubes are fine but I don't know anything about electronics). Aside from big scary problems like faulty tubes, the only thing I can think of is that I was using a regular instrument cable to connect it to the cab (I've ordered a proper speakon-jack cable). Anyone more knowledgable than me know what's going on? It'll still be in warranty and I have another amp, so sending it back isn't a huge deal, but I'd rather not go through the hassle if I don't have to!
  12. I was recommended the SM57 by a few engineer friends, they've said it gives a lot of punch to the sound. I've been told mixed things about dedicated kick drum mics, more people are recommending general purpose large diaphragm mics.
  13. Not sure if this is the right place for this (mods able to move it?) I want to do some recording while in lockdown (and afterwards). I've got a great amp (Mesa Boogie D-800) and sweet af DI box (Rupert Neve RNDI), so I'd like to add some more tonal options by getting a mic to record the cab. What mics have people used for this?Ideally something under £150.
  14. So much drool! If it weren't for money issues I'd be all over this!
  15. If only my roof didn't urgent repairs, I'd be all over this!
  16. It turns out I put the currencies the wrong way round when I checked the exchange rate... oops! With the lollipop tuner and postage its about £125, much more manageable!
  17. ... I'll take that as a no... 🤣
  18. I want to add an Xtender to my JMJ Mustang, which has lollipop style tuners. The problem is I can only get an Xtender with a lollipop tuner direct from Hipshot which clocks in at about £200! I'm thinking I might get one from the Bass Direct and swap the tuning peg but I don't know how achievable this is. Anyone tried it?
  19. The SC has a clear hi-fi-ish tone (depending who you speak to of course!) that I can adapt to fit with whatever style I'm playing, and it's got lots of volume so it works for the medium sized venues I usually play. I generally use the One10 for gigs where space is tight, like theatre pits or some of the local pubs I play. However, because it uses ceramic magnets and they way its built (Alex gives a detailed description on his website) it has a very 'vintage' tone, lots of low mids and smooth/subdued highs, IMO great for soul/motown/old school funk type stuff, which I love playing so it'd be great to have the option of a proper gigging rig with that tone. I've used them together a couple of times, I don't recall thinking much of the sound. Alex doesn't recommend mixing his 10s and 12 as they are so different, and I'd agree. Maybe slightly louder due to extra cone area and being taller and closer to your ears.
  20. I have a SC and a One10, they're VERY different in tone with the same amp so you might want to try a One10 first, they definitely impart their own sound on your bass. One10s are rated at 8ohms so your MB would be outputting 400w to each One10, and according to the website they can handle 250w no bother, and up to 500w if its clean. Loving the pictures everybody! 😍 so tempted to pull the trigger!
  21. I play with a few different bands so set ups can be very variable, sometimes I get wedge or there is an in-ear set-up but sometimes there is neither. Frankly, I just like combining amps, cabs and basses for tonal variations, and I like my One10 and just want that sound but louder (without shelling out for a Two10 which I don't have space for)
  22. Can't seem to find a thread on this though I've seen pictures. What are people's experiences with gigging a One10 stack? Is it loud enough? If I'm using my own amp that generally means its with a wedding band, most of whom have a decent PA, so my rig is mostly for monitoring.
  23. seconded. This pedal does a great imitation of a tube amp if you use it in preamp mode (no overdrive), very B15 sounding. And if you want a bit of hair on the note just flick the switch to add in the gain circuit.
  24. Funnily enough this happened to me, probably about 8 years ago. I stepped on it to tune and the button and various screws and washers launched across the stage! I managed to screw it back to together and it worked fine but I wouldn't buy one again, I use a TC clip on tuner now.
