Ha! The old green lined case - I remember buying the extra fur from Burnley Market....when it had still got some stalls....the pickup was a Schaller. I got it fitted as it had more bite than the original, if I remember it had larger pole pieces. They weren't very expensive but they had a more modern edge, I souped up the bass as I couldn't afford to buy anything else. This was the late 80s to early 90s and the Squier's weren't as regarded then. Everyone in Burnley had a Status or JD at the time it seemed! I remember getting it tarted up with the Badass, Grovers and gold plate. Does it have the tortie scratchplate or the cream one? The tortie one was the original. I have quite a few pics of me playing it and it was on all those recordings and LPs. I had another JV Jazz in sunburst but sold it on, I still have a fretless JV Precision with EMGs which is a fine bass. My main two basses for gigs are my Fender Road worn Jazz and my 70s P bass. For recording its the old Fender Tele Bass or The Gibson Grabber - odd choices but they sit really well in a mix. My other bass is a daft old bright green Rickenbacker I rescued from a Cumbrian ex-punk which grunts and growls as it ought to.

Oh Fitz that's the only bass I ever really missed and I'd trade any of my basses for it! Don't have the old pickups they got left behind in the divorce! I remember the panel pin too ha! Great bodge that! Would love to see a pic pm ffor my email. Seriously would buy it / swap back like a shot. Good to see you on here and thanks for those old HW&Co tapes. Ash

I tried a 70's Jazz reissue and that was very different - not just the cosmetics & feel - the attention to detail wasn't as good to me - not saying the bass wasn't a quality instrument, guess it's down to taste. I haven't tried the 60s reissue but as I said I had a play on all the basses on display USA/MIJ/Squier, etc. and this just worked for me. Playing it tonight and I just love it!

I just bought a Fender Roadworn Jazz from my local music shop in Morecambe. I have got to say I am blown away with this bass. I had my eye on it over a year ago when it was just in but was a wee bit cynical about the roadworn concept and the relatively high price for a MIM bass. However I played it and loved the neck and feel of it. Could've sworn it was a 60s bass but sadly I couldn't afford it at the time. Anyway last week I was down at the shop to show off my old Tele Bass (another story!) to Gary there and spotted the Roadworn Jazz which had come back in as a trade deal. Another play and a potential deal was struck. I had a few days thinking space and had a think of things I could move on - it was a no brainer really, the neck sold it for me. The 'relic' look may put some people off but before it does just have a play on one. I compared it with several other Jazz basses and 'super' Js in the shop and this bass nailed it for me. It feels and sounds very authentic.I'm lucky enough to still own three vintage Fender basses and have owned several USA, MIJ and JVs and had temporary custody of a pre CBS 'stack knob' Jazz but as an alternative to taking several grands worth of vintage bass out to play this comes highly recommended. I got a great deal as ever from Gary at Promenade Music and am looking forward to gigging this at the weekend!

I remember how diverse their quality control was! My school mate had a Kay Precision that had a neck joint you could park a car in, a banana neck with 'orrible tuners and the natural finish showed off a basic ply body, I also had a Kay branded P bass that was my main bass for several years and it had a beautiful solid wood - ahem ash - body and figured maple neck, same brand, same music shop, same model designation.

I've seen a couple of these with two different brand names, one was a Kay and the other a Lincoln I thought it was a Vantage at first but they were a bit 'posher' in their choice of woods. The Kay was a great bass with a very substantial sound to it I wonder if the Kay logo has been taken off as they had a bit of a 'catalogue naff' reputation in the day which was a shame as they had some decent products - nice unusual beast!

[/quote][/sup][/size] [size=5][sup]Yes Marathon basses are nice and light, I've owned quite a few the only problem is the stereo circuitry means the pickups have a bit of a weak sound when played with a splitter to get a mono signal - unless the bass has been modded. Its not a Mark1 version as this had a small oblongish separate scratchplate around the pickup and the bodies were heavier (ex Hayman stock). I'd bid if it weren't the dreaded 'pickup only' as its miles from me! Lovely example. It looks just like one I bought last year....but it isn't as that had typical Shergold finish checking.[/sup][/size]
