1. Yes, if I still find I'm struggling the next step is a preamp. There are Delano ones mentioned on another thread which look good. I couldn't find any drop in pups - as mentioned above I think it'll be custom shelled ones which could get very spendy.
2. Just an update to this. Finally got round to doing a pot swap to 500k pots. First impressions are that the output is increased - obviously there was no way to back to back A/B the changes, but the output now seems to be on a par (or slightly stronger) than a passive jazz. Certainly you don't need to wind the gain up a much a previously (unless you want to!) and to my ears there's more body to the sound - a fuller tone from both pups but particularly the neck - sounds much 'growlier'. If you're struggling with one of these I'd say a pot swap is a cheap way of improving the sound.
3.
A 1X15 PA cab landing on someone has the potential to cause life changing injuries. Apart from the moral responsibility, you have a duty of care. Insurance companies are all crooks, if they can get away without paying because you were negligent, they will. "The 7ft high, wobbly, two hundredweight top heavy box balanced on a tripod, with one of its legs on the dancefloor was only going to be there for 3 hours while drunks dance and stagger around it" would do you no good in a courtroom when read out by the lawyers for the HSE, or by the no win no fee lawyer for someone in a wheelchair who is going to spend the rest of their life with the consequences.
Sorry, but this is cobblers. The very purpose of public liability insurance is to cover you if you have been negligent. That is the very definition of public liability insurance. Ins co's might not have the best press, but their reasons for refusing to pay are usually relating to the person insured failing to advise them of material facts, or fraud. It's very difficult these days for an insurer to decline a claim. Speaking as a lawyer who deals with this stuff day-in, day-out, using a product in the way the manufacturer intended within the recommended design parameters is unlikely to land you in court. Balancing said 15" speakers on a table without any form of restraint, on the other hand...
4.
G&L's have chunky necks or at least the L2500 ive just got does.
The L2500 Tribute I had was too chunky for me, but the USA one I got a while later was thinner front to back. The L2000 tribby I had for a bit was possibly thicker again, but the M2000 tribby I have now is more jazz like, so make sure you get the chance to test one out. I also have an early 90's Warwick Streamer Std and to me it feels thin, but other people said it's quite fat.
5.
You cant protect everything, but I'm never comfortable with heavy stuff like speakers on tripod stands in pubs where the stage is often not big enough. so the stand goes where people can get to it. Its a nasty accident, and a big claim, just waiting to happen. If you cant tie it to a pillar or something, much better put on a table or a crate. Doesnt look good but safer.
I once did a gig where we had some large full range 15"s and for reasons that escape me now, the only way they could be set up was on tables from the venue. Half way through the first set one of them had vibrated it's way off the table and narrowly missed a young boy dancing in front of the band!! Speaker stands all the way for me...
6.
Personal liability insurance ... including for when the PA falls on someone and they sue you.
That's for the band's liability to someone else. Don't be surprised if you do try and follow it up to be on the receiving end of a claim against you for injury sustained as a result of tripping over one of your "dangerously"* sited stands... *ie you and I know it wasn't, but she'll still try it on...
7. Hmm, I was looking for one of these the other day...
8. I used a Radial Bigshot IO when I had one active and one passive bass: http://www.radialeng.com/bigshotio.php It lets you trim the levels of one instrument and has a separate output which can go to a tuner, or other amp etc. An alternative would be to get a line level mixer such as this: http://www.thomann.de/gb/racksized_mixers_19.html?oa=pra Though might be overkill for what you need.
9. Gah, why didn't I know this was on? With missing this, and also Nathaniel Rateliff last week I'm feeling quite grumpy.
10. It'll be a bit expensive to buy a wench just for truss rod adjustments...
11. Hmm, as a drummer I'm a big admirer of Buddy's playing but I have to say that doesn't do it for me. It seems a bit like he's simply ignored Alex Acuna's original part which contributes so much to the WR original - the repetitive drum pattern is part of what makes the tune great as it builds through the phases. Buddy seems like he's just playing around it and dropping bombs when he feels like it. Band are fantastic though. Here's Maynard Ferguson's version - same dress sense though!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNbsnBZOwqE And a later version with some possibly injudicious slapping and popping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68-6O2mJhMw And of course, the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH-WXR-Y2xs
12. I did for years as a drummer so worked quite closely with the bassist! From my point of view the key thing in big band swing tunes is the bass leads with a pushing walking bass line and the drums hold it back - it's difficult to describe but get it right and you'll know immediately. Obv for the more modern arrangements that doesn't always ring true, but I don't think its possible to understate the importance of the relationship between bass and drums.
13. I agreed to arrange some Take That tunes for a particular wedding gig but said it would cost the organiser the cost to the band for the arrangements, which IIRC was around £30 per chart. That said, if it's 25 tunes that's a fair old whack to pay extra!
14.
The pups in the Streamer standard are fine, the issue is that for some reason they're using 25k pots and that makes them sound so weak. Try first changing the pots to 500k, I have a friend who did that and the bass changed into a monster.
Interesting. I have one and my main complaint is the weak output: I was going to fit a preamp, but may try a pot swap first as it's quite a bit cheaper!
15.
That's nice, but where do you live..?
I once put an ad up to show my services as a drummer were available (it may even have been in this very parish) entitled 'Drummer in Bath', because I'm a drummer, and I live in Bath. Some wag suggested if I wanted a gig I should get out of the tub... Have a 'boring story' bump from me.

I have just bought Mark's G&L M2000 Tribute from him. His communication was great, it came really well packed, was shipped as soon as he could after I paid and is in really 'as new' condition. Mark said he couldn't get on with the neck - in this case his loss is truly my gain, thanks for a great transaction! I wouldn't hesitate to do business with him again.
17. Bloody ell, seeing how much these are going for now I should've kept this! GLWTS - have a "how much!!??" Bump on me!
18. Thanks Al, hadn't thought of that.
19. Cheers MC, v helpful.
20. Considering buying a router to further a possible project, which might involve routing out a cavity for a j pickup near the bridge of a poor, unsuspecting precision style bass. I've seen recommendations for the best router generally, but as a first timer (intending to do LOTS of practice!!!) should I be looking to a full size router such as this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/makita-rp0900x-2-900w-plunge-router-240v/52281 or a 'palm size' one such as this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/bosch-gkf600-600w-palm-router-240v/68002 TBH either way it's quite a splurge for one project - afterwards it'll probably get some odd use from time to time (bookcases etc) but it's not going to be in heavy use!
21. Message sent re 2 speakers. Cheers Jake
22.
Kanye smashed it. The haters ain't ever gonna "get it". Pure Kanye last night. Just him in the light. Piled on all of the hits right from the gun. Loved it. This is music 2015 style.
I do beg to differ - if 'smashing it' is turning up and massively disrespecting an audience who've paid hundreds of pounds by not even doing them the courtesy of bothering to put on a show instead of singing along to a backing track. There were a number of false starts and cock ups, not all of them attributable to Lee Nelson. It was clearly shambolic and barely rehearsed. How he thought going on a cherry picker would assist is beyond me. I was quite impressed with the lighting rig though.
+1. Of course you won't like it if it's hip hop. I have never had a conversation with a middle aged white bloke about Kanye... or even classic hip hop (DMC/PE etc.)
Is that because you didn't understand what they were talking about?
23.
Generally with Ts and Cs, the last bit of paper wins.
Apart from in consumer contracts, where there are certain provisions implied into the contract by law and which cannot be excluded - these are your 'statutory rights' and broadly speaking any term that purports to exclude the vendor's liability in this way is likely to be an unfair contract term.
24.
Not sure why a shop is expected to cover the cost of a bass during transit when: A) they're not delivering themselves (who does?) the courier they're using won't insure it If you're buying a bass, do yourself, the shop and the bass itself the courtesy of either buying a hardcase, or even better, picking it up in person. Not poor at all from Bass Lounge. Si
Not saying it's poor, just probably not legally enforceable!
