  1. I know there's not a lot of love for these here, but after a lot of dithering, I've finally got myself a nice vintage style Precision, a Nash PB63 with Lollar pups. Popped it's cherry last night at rehearsal, and it's definitely a goer. Sounds like a P should (first thing I did was put Labella flats on), and plays very nicely indeed. Neck is spot on for me, very comfortable. So much better than the '78 US P I had in the 90s. It's well built, the tone pot is superb, but I have to say the relic finish isn't as convincing as on my Custom Shop 60 Jazz. Very happy with it so far though.

  3. Sad indeed. Mind you, 85 is a pretty good innings. His Black Ark era is madly wonderful, he was a magician with moods and soundscapes, using very rudimentary tools.

  5. My first post on this excellent thread. I'm kind of stuck in the 70's - early 80s. I keep coming back to this one. Never get tired of it. Multidimensional sound scape created on a Tascam 4 track. Bass is so good it's scary. Pure magic.

    I had a '78 American P back in the 90's. It weighed in at 15lbs. Playing 3 sets a night, 4-5 days a week, it exacerbated an RSI caused by the awful neck, and pretty soon I was having to spend a large chunk of my earnings on acupuncture and other treatments. Changed to a 9lb MIJ Jazz and all was well. Weight and balance is a very important factor to me, so I too baulk at buying blind.
  7. Spooky. Same here. Mine was blue, and came from Holland. Nowadays I've ditched the Fast Fret and use a little bit of Ballistol universal oil. Pretty much the same stuff as Fast Fret, but loads cheaper. 1001 other uses too.

    '96 MIJ 62 reissue, my main gigging bass for 25 years, bought new and recently sold. A good workhorse, very roadworthy, played well, but I guess I got bored with it. I replaced it with a 2006 Aerodyne Jazz, non-export. A very good bass, well put together, comfortable, nice neck, and sounds nice with a good range of tone. I'll be keeping this. Recently got a 2020 Custom Shop '60. It's a dream to play, and sounds magnificent. A beautiful thing.

  11. I've had a GK MB150s for 25 years now, I've toured with it (with the matching GK 1x12 extension), recorded with it, and rehearsed with it. Big tonal range, ultra reliable, and the aluminium build is indestructible. A good prospect if you can find a used one, they're now discontinued. I have a Markbass CMD 121 as well, but I kind of prefer the immediacy and punch of the GK. YMMV.
  12. Mine (in 1968) was homemade in a shed by a friend's grandad. It was left handed, and sort of resembled a Precision. I was told it sounded like a dying cow. It had a spectacularly bowed neck, which departed from the body one day. It ended up on the fire. I used to have a pic of me playing it aged 15, but my second wife stole it when we split up.

  14. After playing a mid 90's CIJ '62 Jazz for 25 years, I recently got myself a brand new custom shop '60 Jazz stack pot heavy relic. Yes, rather expensive, but worth it to me. It plays beautifully, sounds just like it should, feels sublime, and is very well put together. Worlds apart from the CIJ in terms of playability, build, sound and looks. It has the kind of mojo that makes me want to pick it up and play constantly, no mean feat after 55 years of playing. Absolutely no regrets. I'm not a banker, BTW.
  15. Hi! I’m Dave, It’s about time I joined in with all this malarkey. About me: I played my first gig in 1968, aged 15, at the local village hall with my school buddies. We did terrible covers of Small Faces, Kinks, and The Kingsmen. My bass was homemade, cost 5 shillings, and sounded like a dying cow. I quickly learned two important advantages of being in a band - 1. girls were suddenly very interested in me, and 2. I didn’t have to dance. I’ve been at it ever since, both pro and semi, touring here and abroad, and have also worked in many different areas of the music industry. I play any style and have been fortunate to be playing mainly originals, although I’ve had several stints in covers bands. I’m an ear player, not much formal theory, read charts but not dots. I’ve managed to get away with it somehow at all levels. Gear-wise, I currently use a Fender Aerodyne jazz, a Fender Custom Shop ’60 jazz, and an 80s Danelectro longhorn. Amps are GK: MB150S with extension cab, and a MB210, plus a Sansamp for when going through the PA. I have bad tinnitus, and generally my ears are shot to pieces. Still at it though. That’s it.
