Ok, ill keep that area in mind. Thanks. Ive never heard of the first dance being at the end of the first set but i guess it does go on. We've had one or two where the Bride or Groom cant find the other half and have asked us to start playing and do thier dance once they hook up with each other but its been vary rare.
The DJ told us that is what they always do at this venue when he does weddings for them.. I suspect it's to get all of the guests in to one place so they can then do the cake cut and buffet with everyone there.
Hello fellow bassmasters, In a gig situation do you just use your amps for sound or do you mic up a smaller amp/combo and put it through your PA. My Ashdown combo has a 'Tuner/Line' output socket, can I plug a line in here and plug into a PA and just use my Ashdown as a backline or shall I have to get a bigger amp setup? I need some help here to understand the best way to go about setting up my rig. Cheers Hitchy
What size and type of PA are you talking about?
Ok, i was going to add a PM would be ok. Ill not pass it on. Just for future refernce. No problem if you dont feel comfortable with doing it.
Oh I feel perfectly comfortable passing it on to anyone likely to get a wedding gig in South Gloucestershire. I am sure that with the right event manager on duty it would have been fine. Other than him the staff were all nice (even the DJ) and the venue was delightful.. The food ran out, though, so maybe our man was aware that he'd not provided enough when he asked us to wait ..... Oh and another thing - we do the B&G first dance at our gigs. We use it to get the crowd onto the floor for our first dance right after and to break down the natural reticence of the unknowing to barn dancing. It works well. Apparently Mr Pratt always has the "official" first dance just before the break for the food. So we had the stupid situation where the B&G were dancing to us but then came back for their "official" first dance to the DJ at the end of our first set .. Chaotic. He's obviously not used to dealing with professionals....
Looks good! $2400 is a large outlay for most bands though. And then there'd be the cost of flights/accommodation to add on top.
Eh? One wedding gig fee?
I'd love to play the US! Sadly I can think of a million excuses why I can't drop everything and go on tour abroad. Still if they are genuine it's a great opportunity. I don't doubt I'll get to play a show in the US at some point in my life
We've played L.A. ... That's Long Ashton, near Bristol

Wedding for a really nice couple soiled by a Pratt of a hotel event manager whe clearly though the band were just one more flippin' annoyance.... Grumpy and stupid all night - like taking 30 minutes to let us in to the empty room when the B&G had asked us to set up early (very early for an after work gig) and fast. Then he strutted into the room when we were half way through setting up to demand we moved all the empty cases and covers beside the dance floor as he had to move some tables in. We ignored him as we had to get set up and sound checked and he'd already caused us a 30 minute delay. Then teh DJ arrived and setup opposite us. He was nice and friendly and chatty so no problem there, phew. He was all over the place - the band can't get it's food 'til the guests have had theirs... Ok, Pratt, so when we have to start again and we're still eating that will be Ok? the B&G said we should play the second bit from 10 and carry on 'till 11 or 11.15 if it was going well because they wanted us "not some records being played" before handing over to the DJ .. Fine with us. So at 11 o'clock, prompted by the Pratt, the DJ started talking over his PA in a "hey let's hear it for the band" stuff.. We quickly told him to shut up and moved to our last dance (that's 15 minutes) At 11.15, with Pratt manager on his shoulder telling him what to do, he talked over the end of our last number, with it's quiet "thanks from the band" end of night bit as if we were a record. We'd already signalled to the Pratt manager that we were ending with that one and we clearly had a plan and "end of show" bit to do ... Unlike a record though, we had a PA and "hang on Darren, we're just finishing here" came over loud and clear .. I was livid and had to go out for air. So, we'll not be playing there again as long as Pratt is on duty. I'll have a chat to the B&G when they get back from honeymoon and they can do teh complaining .... Oh and we had a decibel meter with us. Band 105 db peak. Disco 120db! I was so glad I had my new custom earplugs with me, specially during clearing up. They were very successful and I'll be wearing them at all gigs with drummers from now on. As an added bonus they made it very easy to hear what I was playing

I have mailed the guy to explain why he has shots of a P head and a Jazz head? Is this a possible scammer? Apologies to the guy if not. Steve.
Can you post a link please? Thanks

Ha ha I saw that I've jammed with her ex husband Les once.. he was grumpy, musically selfish and very, very loud but <SET Perv On> I made a point of shaking his hand <SET Perv Off> -
You know too much for a book. You'll need to spend a few hours with a bass or piano tutor or other human who can take into account what you already know and what you want to know first. I've been there and the books, and a lot of the tutors, have to start from the beginning and work throgh. You don't get to that stuff 'til year 3 or whatever .. and you can't ask a book questions of for an example that makes sence in bass-speak. The simple answer is that the chords the guitarist is playing are made up of a selection of the notes of the scale represented by the key (and its name like C Maj or C min) The riff is made up of notes from that scale too. If you take the scale and list the notes in it you'll find the riff notes are in it (usually)
Oh totally, and please don't think I'm being snobby about the whole covers band thing. The reason I replied to that particular post was that the poster was obviously unhappy about playing the songs, and there seem to be quite a few people on the forum who play in covers bands but really don't sound like they enjoy it. The reason I don't play in a covers band is not for reasons of "artistic integrity" or any other such pretentious crap, it's because the material I'd have to play is, for the most part, stuff I just don't like. I can see why they'd have to do it if it's their main source of income but if you're doing it "for fun" and you don't like the material then why do it? Anyway, I'm derailing the thread here so I'll let everyone get back to it.
More of a branch line than a derail Your enjoyment comes from playing. Mine, and many others, from playing things that get a good crowd and then get that crowd going. Original stuff can do that with the right amount of show, marketing and stuff. After all KoL, Muse, The Stones, U2 all play original material ... But it's a lot easier for us norms to do it with covers. I can play alone or just with my band in rehearsal but when I play a show I want a jumpin' audience and all the niceness that brings. That requires a degree of compromise over tunes choices and I'm prepared to do that.
That's why I could never play in a covers band. I could never play something I really don't like just because a bunch of gurning pissheads like to jump around to it. I'd rather play music I enjoy to an empty room.
Different strokes.....
We wont be playing it, we're trying to cover songs that most dont, trying to be an alternative option - we might get less work, but sod it, at least we'll enjoy the songs we play.
An admirable stance and not without merit. You may find it hard to compete for the audience, though, if they obviously like the other stuff.. If you find it hard to get an audience or have the one you have jumpin' around you can always add the odd popular tune at a later date....
Why do so many people struggle with the intro to this jaunty tune by the popular beat combo Kings of Leon? It's not hard really
It's 'cos the snare beat on the 2 is unusual, without its mate, the snare on the 4. It's a little hard to count from the guitar intro. I just don't understand why anyone feel they have to play it exactly the same as the record. The obvious thing to do is to start the drums first then once people are jumping and thinking "er I know this" bring the guitar in.... As a tune it always gets a good reaction whenever it's played (we don't play it as it doesn't quite fit) so thats a pressing reason to include it in the set. Why do popular tunes always get slagged off?
