Imagine a place where your look at lots of basses and amps, even try them out and really enjoy playing without any pressure. Also where the staff are friendly and helpfull knowing that if you were to buy the gear that you'd get good aftersales support. I'd gladly spend an extra 15% over the going rate.
Yeah +1 Why is it so hard for music retailers to do that consistently?
None: The keyboard player does it with his left hand. or One: He holds it and the world revolves around him. (and I admit I stole those )
Nah 6: one to change it and 5 to sit grumpy and crossed-armed in the front row saying "I could do that"
If you could get a luthier to design a Bass that doubles as a Hoover.... You could be onto something big. Garry
Yeah then you could hoover up and practice whilst she's out gigging ...
Spare me some sympathetic thoughts chaps, the line up that I'm gigging with this weekend will not only a keyboard but also four of our six string brethren. Oh joy. All the best Gary.
Ha ha how many guitarists does it take to change a lightbulb?
ppphhhwwooooaaaar this is getting complicated. I'll direct the guys in the direction of this and see if they can make sense of it... I'm perfectly happy for the horns to stay put in front of their 57s... But thanks a lot, some really useful info
Yup Keep It as Simple as possible unless absolutely necessary

Ok fitted the Fender knob that gives direct signal (apart from the vol pot anyway) and .. well it still sounds bassy. I guess I will have to try my old Fender P Pup in it to see if that makes a difference ...
so a safe bet is roughly twice the GBP cost of the bass??
Well not exactly .. The shipping costs remain the same but the Duty and VAT etc increases with the value. Read Dood's detailed thang about it here
Ok no probs..... so anyone know what the Customs/duty/etc works out at?
In general a 110 dollar bass from Rondo will end up costing you about £140 all in, once you've paid the bill for the duty (which comes along a few days later than the bass.)
OG is there room for my Sunn and a bass?
Sure... Can you bring the bass in a gig bag? and how big is the Sunn? (just seeing what room is left ..) Should have room for another person from SE Wales or maybe a Bristol person? I could pop by Hambrook and pick someone up...
I'm half tempted by the 3-tone sunburst with quilted maple top fretless. Hamster
Best read the small print on that one - some of the QMD's have chrome hardware not gold ... "All chome hardware gives this bass a rich look (not gold as shown) "
I for one would like to see an internet only business offer prices where you know you are not paying for the overheads they no longer have for keeping a shop. Five quid less than Soundcontrol or any other other shop retailer with rented premises and staff to pay does not really cut it.....
Maybe they want to stay in business ....
that sort of behaviour does annoy me as well... and people wonder why shops are going under...
That's not a new thing or the fault of t'internet. People have always done that - before the Web we used to try stuff out in one shop then phone round for the best price. however if you got a rapport and a relationship with the guy who was charging more you'd go back there cos it was worth a few quid to get the service. I deal with bricks and mortar music shops that have worked this out - you get top flight service AND they will match web prices if asked. That is the real way forward and the shop people should realise that and stop whining about it.

Try elevating your cab, say on a couple of beer crates or an amp stand like this: That puts the speakers nearer your ears. Then add in a little upper mid tone to your sound using your amp's tone controls ("eq") Somewhere around 2k works for me but you'll have to discover that for yourself. You have to be able to hear yourself in the circumstances you are in because you'll still be playing by ear quite a bit whilst you learn the stuff and get to know what fits where in the tunes and sound. Once you've payed the songs a few time sit will be easier to do it without being able to hear yourself clearly but for now you should make absolutely sure you can hear yourself.

Split shafts are generally made in the far east and are 6mm Solids are made for the determinedly anti metric US market (also in China, usually ) and are a tad larger, (or is it smaller?) and some weird imperial size like 63/64th of a perch or something ... So the make sure you order pots that fit your knobs or you'll have to replace the knobs too.
Don't forget Mark at Bass Direct - not really a "shop" but always happy to show you his stuff with a small amount of notice.
Yup and he does Markbass stuff as well as the exotica Markbass stuff at BassDirect
As said above, they really need to sort out their website then.
It was very obvious their website wasn't working well for them. I offered my services to help sort it out about 18 months ago but they declined ... Bricks and mortar shops can succeed against web only / Thomman style shops because people like to buy from nice people and that's what makes teh difference. Customers will pay more if the service is right. But if you get the poor service often described onthis forum from shops then the customer may as well buy from a computer. It's interesting that Thomman do that cheap on the web thing but also do lots of customer service things too. That's the future of the mass market stuff and a specialist selling special stuff like BassDirect is the other way.

You might want to read my thread asking about tone capacitors for a P whilst you are in the cavity with your soldering iron http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=127122 OG

I'll make a note of that having used a 421 for many years and just bought 4 wireless (vocal) mic sytems
Here's one somebody made earlier - just a simple replacement with no extra switches or wiring to do http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Genuine-Fender-No-Lo...0QQcmdZViewItem To fine tune what tone you want, just try swapping out a few different value caps - 0.1uf, 0.047uf, 0.022uf. 0.0047uf. Only cost 10p each. Hamster
I've ordered one of those - its a tone knob that is a total bypass at 10 and then switches in the cap from 9-1 .. I have a .0475 in there at the mo and this comes with a 0.022 so I'll see what that does. With the rotary control with the various capacitors, I'd need a rotary tone pot too yeah? Did it make a serious difference to the sound with each cap or was it subtle?

I was in Maplins at the weekend and noticed they do a small single tube UV light in their DJ lighting section. In case you want to have darkness on stage but still see your music.
Hey I know that mate .. it's all good I just pointed him that way because Phill kitted out the brass section in the function band I was in with wireless, so I know he's been doing his homework on it . I'm not affilliated with the company or anything like that. If I was I would've pm'd him LOL Nick.
Cooool By the way it's "Horns" not "Brass" Us sax (woodwind) players get sensitive about it
