1.
I've done my fair share of them over the years and I was more indicating that if you are going to price a job then you have to be realistic. Some guys on here are throwing four figure sums about (which is valid for large WMC and Corporate events)which your average spit and sawdust local will think is extracting the urine; if you go in with figures like that your 'unlikely' to get the gig and if you do want the work you've got to price accordingly (whilst getting as much as you can for the effort)
Oh sure, but it's one night of the year when the demand is more in line with the supply. No you won't get a Crez type rate unless your band is in the same league as his and regularly commands £2k anyway. Bands like that are usually booked for NYE by Jan 1st anyway Hence my advice that you should be looking for 2-3 times your normal rate (for that venue) but you'd be daft to go in at normal rates to help out the venue unless you are doing them a favour or getting a year of work in return ... Oh and unless the craic will be great. I've done a few NYE gigs where there's been little of no payment, or follow on gigs or whatever, but the party was fantastic. That's not really what we are talking about here though.
 2.
No Joy all the so called "expensive " pots seem little different to cheap chinese offerings. The stiffest I have are balance pots at 500k with a center detent but they are very deep. I think the felt idea is a good one with the addition of a self adhesive circular pad under it. Something like thick selotape or sticky back plastic to protect the wood / paint in case some grit gets in there.
Hey thanks for looking .. Yeah the single most significant difference between chinese pots and CTS pots is teh pricetag in my experience (and that of a number of luthiers I know ...) I'll get out my sticky back plastic, felt and acrid smelling craft glue then
 3.
Strictly speaking about pubs and WMC here I've never achieved more than £150 per member but certainly never less than £125. I hear what others are quoting and don't dispute some of the fees that have been mentioned but you do have to be realistic and establish what the venue can stomach.
I'd suggest you don't worry about the venue's finances for NYE unless you are good friends or want to play there a lot. The bar takings will be huge.
 4.
I am led to believe Thai ones will get you stiff. (I think the brand is Love you long time Jonny) Bargain at $20.00 Seriously though, I'll have a rummage in my workshop for you. oh er misses
Thanks matey! Not sure if its a 250 or 500 but I can have a look if you have a stiffy I think the Long Felt Want option may lead somewhere too with arubber johnniw washer or neoprene one or nylon or something .. Got me thinking anyway ..
 5.
What, this one... with my wife?!?
Ha ha yeah
 6.
In my KISS tribute.... lycra, make-up, studded codpiece, batwings, a long wiggly tongue (of my own), firebreathing, blood spitting, crotch-thrusting, an 'Axe' bass and seven inch monster-headed stack heels!! lol!
Go on, show us all that back stage pic again
 7.
I've only had 2 gimmicks that I can remember. Years ago when I quit smoking I got hooked on Chupa Chups and always went on stage with one in me gob, eventually folk would turn up to our gigs with spares for me in case I ran out mid set but I got sick of them and I like a beer when I'm playing and the 2 don't mix.
Ah yes we have Bertie. He's full of jelly babies. When people in the audience do heroic things (like getting up to dance, dancing barefoot, dancing with the caller or a member of the band, looking nice, etc) they get one. By the end of the evening everyone's had at least one .. The comments I get when delivering them can be quite rude ... especially from little old ladies
 8. Does anyone make a volume pot with a stiffer action? I keep hitting mine on my jazz bass and turning myself down .. I could use a notched one like a trace amp volume knob is it comes to that but I'd prefer a smother action .. Cheers OG The obvious double entendres are available Just ask and I'll give you one ...
 9.
I'm struggling with the "thumb in the back of the neck" thing as trying also to do one finger per fret is killing my forearms (the part of them which is facing the floor) when I practise. Does everyone go through this or should I go for the easier "thumb over" copout? btw I have a a Vintage Stingray copy, in case neck dimensions are significant here. I dont really want to go short scale if it can be avoided. I also have fairly stubby fingers (although I'm working on stretching their spread), I notivced in another thread that someone else with the same short fingers foudn a jazz bass easier.
Try practicing sitting down and putting your bass on your left thigh with your foot raised like a classical guitarist, at least to start with. That makes the "correct" hand position easier. Then you can move on once you've got the hang of it. You may not want to use this technique on stage
 10.
Fox-tails ... I have several (different colours & sizes) and there's usually one of them dangling from the tuners when I'm on-stage.
'ere, You arn't Alison Goldfrapp are you?
 11.
So is a cheap 5 quid iron ok for pickups etc?
Don't bother, Just get a Maplins gas soldering kit. £20 but a lot cheaper in the long run http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Module...59&T=Module
 12. Oh loads Some outfits I remember .... Black nail polish, orange tank top and frilly white shirt, purple loon pants in 1970 (thank gawd for a bass in the right place) No photos survive Skinny white flares and Teeshirts or white jump suits ('74) Hawiian shirts 1979 - to date Oh and full dress suits and Trilby, Porkpie or Homburg hats, depending on the gig In a band where I was playing sax ... I once grabbed a broom and swept the stage during a very long bass, drums and vocal only break, loads of dancing like a loon, sound effects, taking the p out of band members and audiences, horn section playing cards during tunes, juggling, swapping instruments with bad members during a song, playing the bass players' bass whilst he was still wearing it, getting attacked by the girlie vocalists doing pole dancing moves with their feather boas during my solos, duck walking my baritone sax behind the lead gutarist during his solo... the whole horn section going down and dancing with the audience, band members stripping during "keep your hat on". hiring a cop-o-gram semi-stripper for a girlie singer's last gig ... Throwing sombrero's into the audience, starting conga lines and taking the whole audience out of the building ... Loads of fun
 13.
Don't think I've got time to get down but some good mates will be there, Sean from Electrovoice, Colin Smith (CWS Systems) and Les Patterson will probably be there!
Sir Les Patterson???
 14.
It must be bloody contagious. I woke up this morning to find this in the mirror.
Is that Star Trek communicator there on your manly shoulder?
 15.
rumour is we may have a booking for £2.5k for our six piece.........again trying hard to convince the wife! what is with em eh!, hell i'd give her all the dosh in the end, but its, "well its family and friends time" u get the drift and i guess some of u have heard it all, how do i react?
Yeah well there's your guidance .. how much money do you need to earn before she says it's OK ... One way to deal with the Marriage Maintenance Matters is to alternate one NYE playing and one at home ..
 16.
Depends how good your band is. Double your usual charge is about right in my experience. Steve
2 1/2 - 3 times normal rates .. Don't be shy about it eaither as every band regularly earning money for gigs will ask for that much more for NYE. as will a DJ or any other kind of entertainment. The booker will be expecting it. Door tickets will also be 2-3 times normal .....
 17.
Very nearly there! Only fitting the pots left to do. Should be in my grubby mits soon! I'm drooling here... More pics. The last one's were a bit light, these may seem dark in comparison, but the colour in these is closer to what I was after:
Loooooooovely! and a new "Shuker maple with no dots fingerboard" club member! Let's confuse those guitarists!

 21.
I officially love this post.
+1 Eb? yup... Notice how many of Famliy Man's lines are in Eb? No co-incidence. About 100 years ago I was the bass player in a reggae band - "more bass, man!" was a running thread ... but I was playing a Ric 4001 throgh a little Fender valve head and diagonal 2x15 cab and well into Chris Squire Took me a while to "get it" These days the P bass tone control is on full 90% of the time, full bass for our reggae bits and a bit of back off occasionally if I have to change things as I go along after not gettng the amp EQ right at the sound check .. The complex EQ on my active bass is still a mystery to me so I leave it flat and bump up the middle a tiddly bit when needed. I find active tone controls add too much volume to the sound when you boost them so I generally use them as cut controls, but it's rare ...
 22. Revising this old thread I got a gass soldering iron kit from Maplins and - kerching! Now I can solder ... Just needed the right equipment Thanks to all
 23.
Thanks for all the replys, has been very helpful! anyway there is one on ebay in blue moon which looks sweet as and I have e-mailed the seller and he seems like a good guy 100 positive and what not. However it works out to be £2 more to order from canada than what it would be to get it from dv247 here, but as I say in the better colour. But another problem is that I am going on holiday on sat for a week and he said that the delivery would take about a week, so no one will be in! lols I reli prefer the bluee moon colour over the black tho
You'll have to pay duty and VAt and handling charge to the cost as well .....
 24.
+1 if you have the cash. The ae210 is phenomial. Just turned out that for me the 410 fit in my car and saved me some dosh Either way you cant lose with the berg ae stuff. It used to be seriously expensive boutique only, but now MB cabs are more expensive I dont think that applies so much! The tough covering is most definitely not impervious IME however. But it does look nice and Jim B and Mark are getting me a touch up kit and metal corners.
Ha ha In a "revenge of the bass cabs" moment one of my AE12's left a nasty black mark on the wall at home Still, couple of custom "IKEA Blue Bag" covers and that won't happen again
