1. 1 Life's too short to play crap gear. 2 The difference between a £50 bass and a £500 bass is immense. The difference between a £500 bass and a £1500 bass is more subtle. 3 Many people get a great sound with gear considered rubbish. 4 many people get a pants sound with gear considered to be top notch... 5 Good enough is good enough, both in gear and playing. What bugs me is people spending loads of money every week on fags and booze who say they can't afford decent gear. A hand build bass costs the same as 7 or so fags a day for a couple of years.. (at £5 for 20 .. is that right I have no idea how much fags cost these days)
 2. In Search of Sid Tuesday 20 January 2009 23:00-23:30 (Radio 4 FM) Musician Jah Wobble discovers the real Sid Vicious, 30 years after the Sex Pistols bassist's death. Then a swift station jump to Radio 2 for: Smokey Robinson explores Marvin's spiritual side, from his strict religious upbringing to his embrace of new age spirituality displayed in the What's Going On album.
 3. Trace Elliot TwinValve, QuadValve and HexaValve.. You get about 80 wats per pair of valves, to my ears.. I think the Hexa was a 400 watter.. and that is very, very loud. Mind you they are like hen's teeth and hugely costly. Here'a french thread about a TwinValve with some very big pictures http://www.guitariste.com/forums/achat-ven...e-t,271047.html
 4.
every TBird i've played felt clumsy, like it didn't really want you to play it.
+1 yeah that sums it up. I love the sound and look of the T bird and Flying V basses but they do just fight back. Guess I'm just not dominant enough to handle them
 5. "no pay pal" That will get it pulled by eBay. and no headstock break? Cant be real then
 6.
That doesn't sound like Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - and I'm pretty sure the cover by The Who didn't go like that either (although I can't find a copy in my collection).
Well I never .. Nice heads up, TheFunk
 7.
Wasn't it Mark Gooday who used to drive a black Sierra Cosworth with a Trace Elliot badge on it around Chelmsford back in the day ?
Ha ha He's such and Essex Boy
 8.
Ahh yeah, the other thing i forgot to mention was that certain 'models' have more of that high pitched noise than others... The bypass setting (position 1) seems to leave my stingray slightly lacking in really low bottom end frequencys (like the ones you feel not hear), and that slight hissing noise is ever so slightly audible (completely irrelevant when playing with a group..). To combat this I usually set the rotary switch to position 9 ("rock") which seems to seems to do nothing other than restore that lost 'sub'bottom end and remove the (ever so) slight hiss. The 'rock' setting does not give a particularly rock sound, i use it for bigband jazz and funk on this setting too... the other settings are all usable, but are nothing that cant be achieved by EQing - they are more like a group of pre-set EQs. the battery life is not outstanding, but perfectly adequate, I have done a 2.5 hour rehersal and a 30 minute gig on the same set of batteries, but as the transmitter takes AAs i just have a couple of rechargeable ones which i interchange when needed. The transmitter also has a handy mute function which I didn't know about before i got it! All in all it is an outstanding little unit for the price, and once the cable has been replaced with a quality one, i cant fault it.
Ta
 9.
I havnt used it with effects yet, but I can try it, I have a fx25 filter and a multifx, i'll give it a go and report back!
Oh sorry, I mean the modeling and things that come with the unit ...
 10.
How much do you want for the finger rest?
Sorry, I didn't see this .. PM sent
 11. Chuck it on the bathroom scales too? Cheers .. Where are you? What kind of modern gear might you be looking for, and with how many strings?
 12.
Hope it works. Cheers
Hummmm can someone send me the MP3's? TIA
 13.
Just to update, I ended up going for the Ashdown freebass, and as was mentioned earlier there was a high pitched noise, but other than that it was excellent, so i replaced the (cheap) cable that it came with, with a quality one from Obbm, and the unit is almost totally noiseless. I have been using it for almost a month and have had no problems whatsoever so far!
Do you use the effects and if so are they good?
 14.
Good tip for the Thunderbird, thanks. The neck dive is always talked about and seems some notice it and others, like me, don't. The Gibson has the strap button on the back where the neck becomes the body (ie where your neck screws are on the bolt on neck Epiphone). Don't know if this has always been the case on these Gibson models but looks like a better position than your original botton. The only thing I might do is put on strap locks.
Oh that's not mine just what some guy did .. Me and Thunderbirds have never seen eye to eye
 15. Hummmmmm Hum sounds like a fair amount of tweak will be required to put my set on. Think I'm going to have to get a cheapo P4 for the flats I like the sound of my current P4 with twangy's on and the other's a 5 string ...
 16.
But...there is something about the tightness of Prestia's busy lines. Although busy, I love the tight, tight, and quick quick way he plays. He sustains nothing. somehow, that gives (Tower of power's) funk a little more urgency if you know what I mean?
Sure he is certainly the guvnor at that "16ths all the way through" stuff andit does work well in many of the tunes ..
 17.
Wishbone Ash, Argus. Heard Fleet Foxes, Mykonos, earlier and tried to find who it was they reminded me of. Got it right first time.
Ha ha Argus is on my "take once per month" list "Only so much oil" by tower of power eh? Here's the man on his own for a few bars. Personally I think that's too many notes and it would swing or funk better with added bass space That sounds like Jay Kay singing, too My current list is all Jazz Funk as I may be playing some soon (ooh!) Yellowjackets - Monmouth College Fight Song, Billy Cobham- Moon Germs / Spectrum / Stratus Speaking of which.. Any idea who this is playing bass and with a plectrum! in a Jazz funk band?? Sacrilege! Zappa - Let's move to Cleveland, Cosmic Debris
 18.
I notice his website no longer has his mobile number, or any phone number, on it. He seems to want all contact through email. Cheers Mark
My luthier website client says he spends absolutely ages on the phone to people who just want to talk about things and not book any work ... Maybe he found the same thing. BTW he is already on the Recommended Luthiers list sticky IMHO all Thunderbird owners shoudl be aware of the neck dive fix http://www.lysator.liu.se/~wizkid/music/thunderbird_mod/ You may then play it more than your Jazz
 19.
damn, if only this thread had popped up a few weeks earlier. my bros drum teacher told me he'll give me £50000 if i got rythm stick nailed by jan 19th lol. obvs he wont give me the money, but i'd still have been happy to be able to play it by then. and i got exams this week so havent really got time to get this nailed by the 19th. anyway, thanks a lot for that transcription! thats gonna be very helpful
One of us could pretend to be you and split the money I can't get the mp3's to download ..
 20. OT but related to the subsequent OT discussion.. Patrick McGoohan just died.. It's his fault so many of us got Sevens, well that and fact that Chapman had already product placed the Elan for Emma Peel in The Avengers..

 24.
I have always wanted a 7, and it has absolutely nothing to do with a BRG green and yellowr seven KAR120C seen on a certain TV program that I still watch occasinally and still cant understand. Maybe I need drugs. I was going to buy one and I went to to Caterham and had a test drive but my wife at the time got in and couldnt get out again with any dignity so that was that. I doubt I could get in one these days either
Getting in is Ok but getting out is something of an art form... They make, er, wider ones now .. and longer as the yoof of today are all way longer legged than Chapman (or me).
 25. Well my Caterhams were both incredibly reliable as long as I replaced the Austin A35 rubber bush holding the rear suspension on twice a year. They were both built with care, loads of Nylocs and loctite, and not by me. I'll build one one day. I regularly carried my sax and associated gubbins to gigs in it (a baritone sax in a case the size of a small person, mind, not an airy fairy alto) and once or twice I strapped my bass combo to the luggae rack or roll bar and took my bass gear to a gig. Fabulous driving for about 50p .... Oh and a Caterham is Top Gear car of the year ??? Much as I love them that is a somewhat odd result
