As Imelda May once said (Johnny goes a) Boom Boom.
It's a traditional song from her native Ireland and goes some way to explaining the prevalence of large families.
I would still loooooove to seek her out so to speak. I think we had a similar conversation on this very subject OG. Why does she not love me?????
'cos you are a lousy old slapper?
Yeah I instantly became a fan. He makes it look so easy but reading his blog he has been doing it for 100 years. Not just a great sound but a great look as well. My band are talking about doing Johnny got a Boom Boom but Im no where near that sound.
You might not want to seek out Amy LaVere then .. To paraphrase from memory "I was visiting a friend and he had an upright bass. I was singing in bands but I didn't really play anything at that point but I had a go and just found I could play rockabilly slap on it more or less straight away" aaaaaaaaaargh
Depping in a few bands at the moment, just realised that not all Bassists 'sit' on the same side of the drummer. I thought it was a set up area constraint but most bands I have played with recently the Bassist has been on the left hand side of me (ride cymbal). Me ol' mate Pete (Thunderthumbs) plays on me right (Hi hat side). Just wondering if there was a preference to which side you like to be on? Or did you just naturally fall on that side?
"Drumbloke?" when you are drumming which side do you prefer the bass player to be?

I'm right handed and so are the drummers I play with so .. I always play to the drummers' right and at the front of the stage (as I share front man duties ..) My reason is simple .. generally I need to keep my eyes on the drummer for lock-in and interplay, the other front man and guitarists for cues and my fretboard now and then for a starting notes, position or whatever. If I'm on the left of the drummer I have to look away from them all to check my fretboard or turn in and face the kit with my bass neck sticking towards the audience .. That doesn't look good and I'm on the mic a lot anyway so I just couldn't do it ..

At last - a Gibson for silly money
Mate, if you want to sell it get on there's a vintage Gibson Bass forum out there. As for being jealous, I saw this comment on another thread for a dodgey Precision, another forum member was accused of jealousy for making some factual comments about a decidedly dodgey guitar. I'm not saying your Thunderbird is dodgey but mate we're not 5 year old kids with attidude problems. One thing I think I can safely say is that not many people on here would resort to the comments out of shear jealousy. From what I can gather from the people who go on here *apart from your good self* is that that most are sane, level headed decent blokes who wouldn't resort to cheap comments out of "jealousy". They are making comments on the guitar you are selling. Lighten up and wise up. You'll get a lot more respect.
Envy .... Somehow I suspect that Jimmi is not short of respect. You don't get his gigs and endorsements without it. -
there's no better feeling than getting a new bass home for the first time, for me anyhow, coupled to the fact i just love looking at basses. also i'm very impulsive,i can be reading a book which has a photo of say a really nice Jazz/Precision & i just have to have one like it,can't help myself. i know it won't make me a better player but what the hell I NEED IT.
Haveyou read "Classic 90's Randall Bass Heads" and "Bits from a '62 Precision" by Jaco Geddy-Mingus? Lovely pictures

Hey leave the man alone. If he wants to price the bass at £7k then that's fine. Vintage things are totally different to everything else. You just can't compare one with another or with anything new. No need to get all nasty Good luck with the sale Jimmi .. I hope you included the US and Europe in your areas .. -
Wow, some fantastic and very interesting responses there guys! thank you. I am doing a massive amout of research now and looking into the logistics of it. Basically I moarn the loss of decent back street shops, where they stock good second hand kit, well set-up kit, loads of spares and people on hand for repairs etc. Also, there is a room at the rear which would lend itself for teaching rooms or a small recording studio. Friendly is important too, people want to be sold to, to enjoy the whole experience, in my opinion Denmark Street deserves to fail after I visited it a few months ago. With people who plainly didnt want to help or thought they were rock stars. It would be pointless to compete on the cheap Stagg etc ranges, this market is saturated, I would rather find cheap interesting second hand instruments. I am thinking of aiming it at bands primarily, offering instrument hire too. Early days yet...... Will keep you posted
Good luck but I think those days are gone .....
WHAT!! not changed it ever , how many gigs have you done on the one batt then?
Oh dear .. am I not using it enough? I've done two full gigs and about 7 or so where I play two tunes on it .. plus home noodling. And as I said, as with any battery powered bass, I unplug the lead if I'm not actually playing it. Not between numbers on the whole gigs but you know what I mean, if it's on the stand it's unplugged

Maybe all those "who?" people work for Fender
Im considering a Stagg EUB for some rockabilly slapping, I can get away with some tonal discrepancies to a degree as it'll be fast and hard thumping, oooh eerr !!! These Stagg EUB's seem to have cheap chinese/generic P.bass machines so fit whatever strings fit, right? My double bass which I use for Rockabilly / Psychobilly is fitted with Eurosonic Ultralites and I reckon these strings I seem to like so much may not fit a Stagg EUB's machines. The string ends seem too big to fit bass guitar machines.......any ideas or advice? W.
Change the strings?? [shudders at thought of price]
what is everyone getting out of their batteries on Staggs? seems to drain pretty quick on mine, anyone change theirs evry gig then?
Not changed it so far but I only plug it in when I'm actually playing it .. We use tons of 9v in our wireless kit and the best so far are the Duracell procells and the B&Q orange one
I used to have a Combo 300 too, but couldn't lift it.
ha ha Some kind PO has fitted huge inset side handles on mine, and it has wheels ... I still get help though ...

The 5 or so nice music shops near me do all the stuff people are talking about but in the last year I've probably spend just £150 in them - and most of that was piano books and Ukuleles (that's what my brothers got for their 50th birthday )... I may have spent just £20 on bass stuff in real shops ... So ... Maybe your questions are not the right ones .. I'd suggest you ask "What have you actually bought from a real music shop in the last year?" Not a web shop, a real shop, by walking in and handing over hard cash.

Most of my basses cost a lot less than these
OldGit replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Ha ha well I hope the market for old Fender bits with stacks of Mojo is alive and well. He'll probably get that money if he is prepared to ship to the US. -
+1 "A change is gonna come"
I was told (maybe incorrectly) that the Shuker JJB costs about two grand - in which case a Fender sig would almost certainly be cheaper ... but fair comment on quality
Depends on the spec but the price for the "standard" JJB is £1500
I use a peavey. admittedly, its an old yeboard combo, but its a great practice amp! matt
There's a broken Combo 300 KB for sale in Newport if you want spares/second speaker cab ..

My B rig (the one I use for jam sessions and other precarious gigs) is a series one Peavey Combo 300 with the Black Widow 1x15 ... I got it last year for peanuts thanks to a bit of basschat help and local paper advert spotting... It's about 30 years old, weighs a ton, looks like it lived in a damp cellar for 10 years ('cos it did) and sounds great. I've had Peavey 1x15 combos of various sorts off and on almost as long as I have been playing. Brilliant bang for your buck and more or less bulletproof. Certainly almost any amp repair bloke can nail them back together for pennies... My bass playing brother in law plays his Ric 4001 through the series one 75 watt TNT 1x15 he got secondhand about 30 years ago. It still sounds fine...

IMHO trying to sell mainstream gear against Reverb, PMT, GAK and the high street chains, well established competitors and the online guys like Thomman would be business suicide, even if you could get finance and supplies. The only success story I know of for a new music shop business like this is Bass Direct where almost ll hs stuff is exclusive to him and generally top end. He has alternatives to the other places like the Gallery so that the competitive aspect is limited. I doubt there's room for another shop like that.
