1.
...I'd be interested in hearing from the BC seller as it then informs our opinions on matters like this in the future.
I know Connor, having got extremely rat-arsed with him at the last Moffat bass bash. I've sent him a link to this thread.
 2.
Does anyone know whether the pocket on a Squier Affinity Series P or J, is the same dimension as the MIA & MIM versions? And will a Mighty Mite neck slot in without any problems? Cheers in advance.
Surely you know the answer to this having built this P bass already .
 3.
Colour is one of the most important considerations if you're going to use it [s]live[/s] to mime to songs. .....
Fixed
 4. I love your tr access idea. You've got to add a price to your post though buddy or it may get pulled. Tis the rules.
 5.
Ah but what about the Lindy Fralin Split single. Or GAFs split jazz thingy
What about them? They sound like split coils (P pups) but are in a straight line... and you can do phase invertion should you like. Good on you for doing your own tech. Guys like that really get my goat.
 6.
Well same guy that told me flats were like playing suspension bridge cables and the same shop that said "Are you sure you don't mean coated, look the coating makes them almost flat" So I take their "Advice" with a pinch of salt. I have heard though a local forum his set ups can leave a lot to be desired too.
Yep, time to find a new tech.
 7.
I've used this bass body for a while now and it never fails to turn heads.
Stomachs more like. That one should be reported though. You can't have Fender Road Worn in the heading - that's seriously misleading.
 8.
Interesting. Is there that much difference? (You might guess that I only own one bass, sad though that may be).
Absolutely there is. The simplest example = listen to a single coil P and then a split coil P. It's like chalk and cheese. And if you want to go into it more, there are numerous threads on the difference between P's and J's.
 9.
...Oddly though I had the "Pro" set up and repair guy at a shop tell me it does nothing. the wood shields it anyway.
Seriously, it's hilarious what so called guitar experts try and fob the punters off with. Ask him to build you a Faraday cage out of wood the next time you go to him... although having read that I suggest giving him a wide birth.
 10. Haha he has quite a large net presence (especially to do with speakers) and is a Elton John tribute act.
 11.
The reason I did it was because the neck pickup was a single coil and the bridge, although a humbucker, could be split....
Every bass I build or put out is shielded regardless of pup configuration. It's just my belt and braces approach for one less thing to go wrong.
 12.
I'm slightly embarassed to admit I didn't know that, though I feel I should have - so thanks for that. But it begs the question: why not use such an arrangement in all basses so that shielding isn't necessary?
Because some folk prefer the sound of single coils to 'buckers. Simples.
 13.
Good point. Once you factor in the pickup and preamp... you're nearly at MusicMan SUB price. Now the SUB is a really nice bass, great construction, famous 2-band EQ... and will hold its value, in case you need to sell. If you take an OLP and put a bunch of upgrades... that's not going to happen. If you find an OLP you really like (the necks can be horrible, or very nice... they vary wildly between teh first models and later ones) etc, go for it. A pickup upgrade, without a preamp, already has the potential to make it a nice bass. My black one is like that. But a SUB is a superior bass. The finishes may not be to everybody's taste and the original pickguard is fugly... but that is easily replaced. They only came in rosewood boards, 'though... If you prefer maple, like I do, that's another reason to want an OLP. But SUBs are great. The white SUB in particular makes me all warm and fuzzy, and I can't justify yet another Stingray-like bass... but I really want one. Some day.
Listen to this man ^. He knows his onions... ... In fact he probably has a fretless onion with a JE preamp.
 14.
I've often read about people doing this. I can understand how it works and I assume people have had good reason to go to the trouble they do, so I'm not having a go, but . . . 1. I've never had any noise problems with my bog-standard MIJ Fender Precision 2. Most manufacturers don't shield their basses (I believe) . . . which implies, to me, that it shouldn't be necessary. So, when there's a noise problem, and I know there sometimes is, should we be looking elsewhere for the cause rather than reach for the copper tape?
1. a P bass has a humbucking pickup therefore shouldn't hum... if it does then there is something seriously wrong (if the fault is with the bass) and shielding wont help. 2. most manufactures don't (for economical reasons - ok you may get a wee bit of aluminium foil under your p/g)... but the good ones do. They may use shielding paint, a copper plate or copper foil - the latter is usually done by custom luthiers.
 15. Bloody 'orrible sounding things. Don't get sucked in because they look like Stingrays. Do what Jose (mcnach) says buy one (if you have to) then trick it out to make is sound half decent... alternatively buy some thing half decent in the first place. All IMHO of course.
 16. Trade for my Caps Lock Key? John East may actually use a similar Caps Lock Key. My reference to JE's Caps Lock Key is for reference only. It is not JE's Caps Lock Key and doesn't look the same but will fit the same. JE will have a Caps Lock Key and the only difference is the lack of a white position marker and the writing is more pronounced on [s]these knobs[/s] ... er ... I mean, this Caps Lock Key. My Caps Lock Key is brand new and has been in it's packet for 3 months... but if you politely pull me up on my John East name-dropping naughtiness, I may just let it slip to being used on a keyboard to add weight to my theory that mine and Jonh East's Caps Lock Key is very similar indeed. Hmmm, so I guess strictly speaking it isn't brand new.... and I don't know why I told you about the packet either. Please don't think that by me mentioning the aspirational John East so many times in one post that I am elevating the stature of my run of the mill Caps Lock Key which has nothing to do with John East what so ever. I could just as well have cited the even more aspirational Fodera as I imagine they have stacked Caps Lock Keys on their keyboards too and in general they all sort of fit anyway so I'm probably right. See also my sale for a set of Fiat Uno wheels they fit onto hubs on an axle.... much like Maserati ones do. I once saw some Maserati wheels and the real differences between these and them is minimal... actually they are completely different in most respects but what the hell they both prevent the vehicle from scraping it's ass on the ground in much the same way so you'll probably never notice the difference. Probably. P.S. John East.
 17. I play both bass and guitar. I normally don't set out to actually write something but can get the germ of an idea while noodling with either. As soon as I get my teeth into something I find that I simultaneously think what the other part(s) is playing. I have very little theory so it's all by feel. I write with loops a lot and have gone from looper pedals to loops in Audacity to DAW for writing but generally share my ideas with guitar as no one else is interested in bass and couldn't figure out what goes with it anyway .... it was far simpler when I was in a riff based band where the bass and guitars almost played the same thing.
 18.
I have 3 x Single and 1 X Stacked black metal control knobs. These are brand new and have been sitting in their packet for about three months. They fit 6mm shafts and are an identical spec to John East control knobs. I'm asking £15 including postage.
These don't look like the JE knobs I have. Just saying like.
 19. A standard Telecaster diagram with a tone pot for each pup aught to do it.
 20. It looks better all back together than I'd imagined Matt. Nice one.
 21. Damn I just bought some too.
 22.
Sorry, didn't check the sizes of the example. My set goes to 1.25 mm. I'm on my phone now but will try to post a more appropriate link later
Wow they must be made from uber tough stuff not to snap under torsion at that size.
 23. If the coils aren't resined in to the covers then you could just bodge the pups out then replace the covers.
 24.
I'd try that first. If that don't work, drill the screw heads off, lift the pickups out then you should be able to get pliers onto what's left of the screws. Might be worth putting tape over the pole pieces so they don't get bits of shrapnel stuck to them.
Nice tip.
 25.
I do furniture restoration and face this prob often; a screw extractor should sort you out Drill a pilot hole into the offending screw, and screw in the 'remover', which is reverse threaded to it'll loosen the screw rather than tighten it.
The smallest extractor there is 4mm. That's bigger than the screw head it's self. (let alone trying to drill down one )
