1.
....One thing I never got about cars is when people use paying in cash as a bargaining point, you can pay by any way you want it aint gonna make the price go down.
It's about disclosure. If your buying from a dealer the taxman doesn't always find out about those sales.... if it's private then the Mrs. doesn't always get know where you shook hands at.
 2. I use a Polytune, the 2 bands I'm in have different tunings - one is CGCF the other BEADG so I don't bother using alternate modes (I didn't even know it could ). I do flip between guitar and bass modes at home though. With bass I just plug it in and Vwoomph (it's very fast at tracking) - I use single note tune for CGCF and both single and strum tune for BEADG or if I'm playing a 4 string in standard tuning. I like the Polytune because it's very good for setting intonation (it's my job). I used to have a Pitchblack and a DT-10 before that, I think I preferred the DT-10 more (it can mute). I found my Pitchblack box the other day - free to a good home if anyone needs one.
 3.
Always quite fancied an old Ray but some of those old 'clubby' necks really put me off. Just spotted this one has a 'smaller jazz bass neck' I didn't even know such a thing existed on a Ray! Of course I have no idea about prices on old Rays - is £1,550 a good price or just general 'market value'?
They used to do the odd Jazz neck if you specifically asked for one. £1500 seems pretty fair for a '79.
 4.
Our last tune sounds like sunnO))) monolith&dimensions.
Yeah, that's the kind of the sound in my head that I'm making my recommendations for.
But anal growl could describe that as well so nice find you made there
It's like it was meant to be (C'est destin).
 5. P.S. I can't stop reading your name as "anal growl"
 6.
So that one would do the job pretty much better for a ray for example ? Never tried a ray yet so i can't really judge them, just a friend of mine who advice them. Also our band was initially into stoner, we are more doom/sludge oriented now.
Hmmm. I think given the choice, I'd go for the ray. ... because it is more versatile. (I don't believe woody mud is the tone you are after) I think the G&L suggestions are good too. Those MFD pickups will drop a city if you want. Imagine playing one of these (or the 5 string)...
 7.
Yup i'm in touch with a guy selling a P-T40 let's see what happened. What a about a stingray ? Would you buy a Stingray 5 a Stingray 5 classic, a pre-EB stingray 4 or a 90" stingray 4 ? And what about Lakland us series ? They seems to have 35", string through, nice string spacing. But there aren't a few over there.
Yes 'rays are aggressive but I wouldn't really recommend them for metal unless your prepared to eq the hell out of it's ass - the mid bite is too intrinsic for me. I play stoner rock and seldom bring the ray out for that.
 8. Another top drawer deal. There was a small amount of unaccountable damage and Chris insisted on a partial refund. If everyone on Basschat was like Chris... .... there'd be far fewer Precisions for sale. Many thanks mate. Rich.
 9.
But everyone (Mpingo) is (Paduak) arriving (Wenge) at (Ziricote) the (Afzelia) same (Zebrano) conclusion (Macassar Ebony) Is (Honduran Rosewood) this (Rock Maple) really (Walnut) the (Mahogany) result (Alder) of (Maple) independent (Ash) thought (Ovangkol) or (Basswood) the (Pau Ferro) result (Swamp Ash) of (Lacewood) a (Spalted Maple) change (Poplar) in (Cherry) consensus?...
10 out of 10 for effort writing that up. I think it may be as a result of countless threads bigging up exotic woods (and justifiably so for many reasons) without clarification or actual proof of the alleged tonal super-propeties.... and a bit of common sense.
 10. C'mon guys, pics or it didn't happen. Loving the ones from those who have indulged us.
 11. +1 to the Blowtorch. Use a compressor for sustain.
 12.
Bracing type, glue, the ratio of stability to vibrational qualities, the way the wood is sawn, etc, is much more important than the type of wood as far as I'm aware.
Totally. But this thread will be forgotten by next week and the next gathering of [s]Googlers[/s] experts will be here extolling the extraordinary tonal properties of the hyper elite and unsustainable Peruvian Ymabitovahtwat wood.
 13.
beautiful bass - I love the finish. I think the P pup IS the right way round - I never really understood why the Fender one is the wrong way round (I'm sure I'll get abuse for that) Surley you want the trebble side thicker/bassier sounding and the bass side more defined and less muddy....
No arguments here (although maybe "muddy" isn't an adjective I find synonymous with P pups but I know what you're getting at). So far I've built 2 basses with reverse P's. The first in the natural position (like Sandberg do) where there's not much difference to tell you the truth although I think there may be a perceived extra warmth. The second has a bridge position P and when I was testing the idea it became obvious that the standard orientation was not going to work well.
 14. I'm one of those fools who put cred over comfort ... although I find it perfectly comfortable. (sorry it's late and I can't find an in focus (or recent) pic)
 15. Despite here screen name Mel doesn't in fact appear to be all that evil. I paid for some saddles and to my surprise they arrived as described... and there was me expecting a jiffy bag full of hissing insects or at least some ectoplasm. As a result of this shock revelation, I can fully recommend Mel for wheels and indeed deals. Many thanks. Rich.
 16.
I just don't want to grow up
You will forever be the Peter Pan of bass.
 17.
This is really interesting...after much swapping of pickups, necks, bodies, tapping of woods and pondering I have come to the conclusion that the role of the neck is a bit under-appreciated and would probably look to change that before body wood if I wanted to make tonal alterations.
I believe this too but I think it is even more dependant on the quality of the union between the neck and the body. Get that wrong and it negates any benefit.
 18.
That bass player, he's so cool he can even afford to take his shades off midway through the song ... when I grow up, I want to be like him.
Just give it some time mate.
 19. (pity the guitarist seems to have forgotten why he's there )
 20. "This item is no longer available, but please search above to find more great bargains!" Yep it was.
 21.
Does anyone know anything about these and how much they are worth: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/aria-pro-ii-fret...p;_qi=RTM742989. I am very interested but dont want to make a mistake, Cheers.
Well your first mistake was posting it in General Discussion. Now almost every bass-player in the country knows about that auction. It looks like a de-fret to me. (fret markers) Post your query in the "jap-crap" section under "ebay links" and you'll get some more informed answers.
 22. I absolutely love the many sensible answers in this thread. A year ago it would have been full of pseudo elitists spouting as many exotic sounding names as your keyboard could handle. Well done Basschat you are learning to think for yourselves.
 23.
I have a 60w combo amp by tanglewood not the best i just wondered if anyone could suggest a better speaker to go into it to make it sound a bit better?
What size (diameter) is the speaker? To tell you the truth it might just be better to upgrade your whole amp.
 24. Funny you should ask. My mum (of all people) was around this weekend and was looking at some of my creations and asked me if I'd ever thought of doing a hologram finish - I don't know why she mentioned it. Here's a rather simple way of doing it that I found. There's a couple of galleries here too.
 25.
"You expect me to talk Goldfinger?" "No, I expect you to make me a patch lead Mister Bond of Her Majesty's Soldering Service..."
Remember to switch it off at the plug or the results may be..... ... Shocking.
