I like to do my homework with basses and have eventually found 'my' 4 string, however new band requires a lot of drop D/ even lower stuff. Using a basss extender at the moment, but seriously thinking about getting a 5. I used to have an OLP Levin, but can't remember why I sold it....I'm sure it wasn't the string spacing, I 'think' it was due to the weight and quality (compared to my other basses) and maybe sound too. I seemed to go quite easily between 16mm and all my other basses 18mm without any problem.
So here's the deal. I want to use 5 and 4 strings with the band, anything wider than a Jazz neck has always caused problems at the first position (ie Precision B and C necks), Dingwall ABZ 4 strings were uncomfortable at the first position due to the reach (although I loved the neck shape everywhere else and loved the lack of weight - not keen on the sound). Would I be using first position with a 5 much though?? Never had a problem with 4 string Stingrays but never liked the sound or weight.
Sound wise, I really like an old school thump with very little top end. Opposite of clanky, almost dubby. Playing Rock (Foos/GNR etc) and girly pop rock (Anastasia, U2 ).
I really like active Precision pickups - it's the only thing that seems to cut through - my Shuker has a Precision pickup in a soap bar housing which sounds perfect. Bass must be active - I just cannot get enough umph with the amp EQ settings of passive basses??!!
Sorry for the info overload, I've £600 to spend plus could possibly throw in an ACG Gallus...
What should I shortlist? Oh and I've a dodgy back, so lighter the better!!??!!
