1. Im looking to trade my Dingwall ABZ (£1600 new in Nov '10) for a nice bass. Must be jazz type neck but no ss please. Looking for quality stuff - ACGs, Shukers, A necked Precision, Rick, anything quality with a jazz neck. There's a blue one here: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...INDIOBURST.html And this is the actual bass (first black one in Europe and first of only two with the tone styler circuit): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSp0P3xhKuA...be_gdata_player Now for sale £1200 (no low ball offers please - it is in brand new condition). Photos on request (I'm posting this from an IPad)
 2. Looking to trade this for a 'nice' Gibson Les Paul standard. Must have a 60s neck. The bass is immaculate and in new shop bought condition. Specs here: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...INDIOBURST.html If you go onto their sold page, it's the black 4 string ABZ It's this exact bass (first black one in Europe and one of only two with a tone styler tone circuit fitted). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSp0P3xhKuA...be_gdata_player Will swap for a cheaper guitar plus cash if it's something nice - Epiphone Slash, Tokai (not a 48), Orville etc I can provide photos of the bass, I'm using an IPad at the moment though.
 3. Some good ideas here. The kill switch is so I don't have to unplug between sets/can leave it plugged in at home. Got me thinking: volume for push active/passive Balance as the pull kill switch Treble for the LEDs That would get rid of all the switches on the bass...
 4.
What do the knobs do? - volume, balance, bass and treble? If so go for one of the layouts with them in a line. I don't like the diamond pattern unless it's the standard guitar 2 pickup vtvt set up as there isn't a logical pattern to it.
Yeah volume, balance, bass and treble. I'm really struggling with the switch layout. I'm thinking all in a line with the jack above the furthest right knob, with kill switch next to it. But where should I place the led and active/passive switch?
 5. Hi guys, Jon has sent me 5 options for knob layout. I also need to include 3 switches (LEDS, kill switch and active/passive) and a front mounted jack (I'm sick of fishing for the jack socket on the side and with the kill switch I can leave the lead plugged in). Anyways, I can't get my head around how best to lay the switches out. John has sent me these options, what do you think?
 6. Selling this on behalf of a mate. Good condition, with box and manual. Light home use. Looking for £130 I'm listing this from an IPad, PM me for photos.
 7.
Man, I don't think I'm cool enough for that!
Lol LEDs to the top edge not the front
 8.
I love lacquered necks too. The necks I have played recently on new Fenders feel cheap to me, the satin urethane is horrible. I like the Warwick ovangkol feel, but other than that, deep honey gloss lacquer over nicely figured maple is my favourite.
I seem to associate a lacquered neck with chubbiness for some reason??!!
 9.
Best way to open a neck is a saw.
10.
If your ever getting rid of one let me know!
I might be...but neither are standard. Both have LEDs fitted by Jon Shuker...
 11.
Sell me your missus - mine won't let me buy another bass and I've only got one FFS
Now there's your problem - never discussed basses with the wife. They just appear She did ask how much the Dingwall cost, seemed happy at £60. Just neglected to add 'a month'
 12.
I do actually know what you mean James, I think its a very personal thing to do with the size and shape of your hands as well as the relative proportions of a neck. Two that spring to mind instantly are Musicman Bongo's and Hohner "The Jack" basses. Both felt as if I could run around them all day. Unfortunately my technique doesnt allow for such tomfoolery so I've stuck with my Jazz which fights me for every note! (In the very best way!)
Funny you should say that - I've got two Hohner Jacks although prefer the neck on the humbucker early ones
 13.
I think many bass players experience problems caused by bad or patchy technique, which can be accentuated by the differences in their instruments. I don’t see why the size or shape of the neck should have such an affect on a player if he's playing correctly. After all double bass players seem to accept that they don't get a choice and generally seem to get along well without complaining about their instrument.
Mmmm so you never prefer one neck over another? Back in my guitar days I spent way too long on establishing a good playing technique so I'm sure it's not that...although I do agree my bass playing leaves a lot to be desired... I do have arthritis which is causing my index finger to twist inwards which may have something to do with it??
 14. I've been wrestling with this for years. Some basses just feel really easy to play 'open' springs to mind. My Dingwall feels like this but I don't know why? Its nothing to do with the fanned frets - err is it a compound radius? In a former life I used to play the guitar and a PRS felt the ultimate opposite 'closed' tight neck, cramped and uncomfortable. I've thought for a long time that it was linked to binding on a neck, but now I'm not so sure (played an Esh which I didnt like). It's definitely not nut width as 40mm plus always used to give me hand cramps (although I can cope with the Dingwall at 40mm). Or is it?? Is it radius vs neck shape? Hate P necks (never played an A, but played plenty of Bs and Cs). Recently a 62ri Jazz neck is starting to feel huge too! Had a 62ri U P neck which was completely unplayable to me. Can anyone shed any light? I need to understand
 15.
I thought the OC-3 had an OC-2 mode? And you didn't like the OC-3?
The OC3 is digital though...
 16.
Not mine. If he's explicitly told to bring breakables, then he has his snare case and cymbal bag. If there's a house kit, he'll happily use that, cracked cymbals and all.
Think we must play poorer venues than you - we are lucky if we have a stage
 17.
I think I might become a drummer.... all mine brings is sticks and an attitude!
Err and an estate car full of cases!!
 18. Start off by saying that I cut my musical teeth with Guns n Roses but am happy to listen to anything without prejudice (is that called getting older??!!) Anyways, just wondered if anyone had any experience of playing in a non traditional music setup? For some strange reason a Black Eyed Peas tribute really appeals! Anyone played bass behind a Boyband tribute or the like? I'm presuming that type of thing is mostly backing tapes? Been listening to some Dr Dre recently, who if I remember rightly always tries to use 'proper' bass...and an Octaver unless my ears deceive me! Maybe I just want to diversify a bit, but I'm not clued up for Jazz! If I am being honest, the big draw to moving from guitar to bass was the fact that mostly anything can have bass on it...
 19. I think you've got to persevere with them - or have bad tinitus anyway. I got some custom made plugs which filter everything not just the top end. It sounds wrong playing without them now. Can't sing with them in (which is probably for the best...) Sorry for going off-topic
 20.
Some have mentioned earplugs.... For rehearsals yes, gigs no. What does it say to your audience if the band are wearing them?
Really, really disagree with that - the audience are not stood next to the drummer! I carry ear plugs everywhere...nearly put them in when I took my 4 year old to the panto!
 21. I'd look at a Tascam bass trainer or a pandora - so much better than the bare bass... I'd be inclined to buy a camera case for it, or even just wrap it in cling film!
 22. Ok thanks for the replies. Think I'll take a risk and eBay the bits. I wouldn't consider the gear as vintage. The compressor is from 97! Admittedly the graphic is a fair bit older
 23. I don't understand. Have I done something to offend in my original post?
 24. At the end of the day, the SXs are cheap. I've owned about 6 of them - kept the neck off the first one I ever bought and mated it to a nicer body. Make no mistake, the necks are massive on the Ps. The SXs were good for the money when the exchange rate was awesome - I paid £60 for my first one. Quality tuners make the bass feel far better. I've always put Gotoh 201 bridges on them. Standard pickups seem fine - electronics seem to be a bit cheap but perfectly usable. They suffer with typical cheap Chinese build quality - some are great, some are ok and a few are really crap. Consistency is not very good. I think what a lot of people mean when they talk about how good they are is that they are a good base to mod. Standard US Fender is in a different league, but mod a 'good' SX and it will be just as good as the Fender for half the price...
