Are high end basses for investors or musicians?
It's up to the potential buyer to decide how they want to spend the money they have earned. If a person wants a luxury item and can afford it, then that is a matter for them alone. If they can afford it, but don't like it then not buying it is a matter for them alone. If a person can't afford it but desires to own it there seems to be 2 general reactions - to either make it an aspirational item, worthy of saving up and sacrificing other non-essential spending or they can bitch about how crap the item is, or how crap those who do have the means to buy it are. Most amusingly, an awful lot of the people bitching have never been in the same room with a Fodera / Ritter / whatever. Let alone played one.
True, might I add that most bitching i've read about high end basses is sadly focused on the cost rarely because they think they sound bad. It's an investment in me not the instrument, my enjoyment is the return I get from playing. When it comes to selling, I'm happy to get the best price I can. -
You can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter!
I hope to be in a situation where I can re-quote that effectively . :-) LOL -
Looks a good strap I'm sure more comfy than leather, but the fixings look plastic and I'm reluctant to trust the durability of plastic fixings on straps with a heavy bass after having them fail on me on guitars in the past. I have heavy instruments and for me they have represent too great a risk. Leather works for me. :-)
These are excellent - Minotaur from Greece - about £30-40 and arrived within a few days. Top quality and able to deal with heavy basses (I have a dodgy shoulder and back) http://minotaur.gr/c...229867kdh25ar02
I bought one of their 4 inch wide padded leather straps about a year ago and today I've just had delivery of another two to replace some older straps. They are damn good quality.

Maybe pickups wound by cougars would be a good alternative... but then they may be considered road worn and that's a whole other debate ...... :-) -
Was it the right decision to order a custom bass?
What you think of the sound is all that matters.
What we like in a bass sound can be very personal, which is why there are so many different bass makers out there to help us find that sound, and probably why you chose to have a custom bass. If you do gigs with a PA and decent sound guy, I would suggest having a chat with him/ her and get their view on how the bass is coming across as they will want to give you a good sound. Jazzyvee -
Guitarists only take one guitar? I'd love to be in that band
When I was gigging regularly on guitar, there were extremely rare times that I took more than one guitar and from memory those were only when I needed acoustic guitar for a couple of tracks in the set, not as a backup. -
It has more than paid its way and owes me nothing. It would be an easy sell, but not at more than I paid for it. However the money I have earned with it, together with the joy it offers due to its excellent build has made it an excellent investment.
Yep I agree with that sentiment. -
I can't help thinking that given a blank cheque to buy any bass our hearts desired we may find that some more expensive basses suddenly become worth having. :-)
-
Simple, a bass is worth it when you are happy to pay the cost of owning it. That goes for cheap or expensive basses. Jazzyvee

Anyone know where I can get q-tuner pickups for guitar. I've not managed to find anywhere to buy them on- line. I need 2 singles and a hum bucker. Jazzyvee

Anyone got any tips to share about getting a string endorsement deal with D'addario? Jazzyvee

Great choice, I changed my bass strings a couple of weeks ago and put on D'addario EXL170-5TP 45-130 nickel strings. I've never used nickel before and these really woke the bass up. I have Prosteels on my short scale 4 string bass and they are fantastic and I've used d'addario's on my guitars for as long as I can remember. Previously I'd been trying out R.Cocco RC 5C Stainless steel bass strings but I don't like the feel when they were new. Quite abrasive to the touch, too much finger noise and didn't stay bright very long in fact by the time the rough surface diminished so had the tone. But I left them on the bass for over a year because I wanted to see if I could get a mellower tone for reggae gigs but to be honest the new strings sound better with the top end rolled off than the old strings did with their faded tone and the clarity was where I wanted it. I have a feeling I will stick with the D'addario strings for a while but the next ones will be stainless steel as I do like the clarity of stainless steel strings and they will probably keep their tone longer. But time will tell. Jazzyvee
You MUST watch this though:
what bass is Trevor Horn playing?

I played on the Hidden Stage at the Boomtown Festival yesterday with Musical Youth and had a fantastic gig. I gave a rare outing to my Alembic Series II 5 stringer. I got yet another dodgy Ampeg bass rig. I know they are great amps but I must have been given the duff ones. Every gig so far that has provided a backline that is ampeg, there has been something wrong with either the amp or the cabs. In future I'm gonna be taking my Mesa boogie head with me then at best, there is a decent cab and at worst, I can at least give the sound guy a DI from the back of the Boogie head with my sound. I had a crackling noise develop on my master volume for the East system that John installed in my bass around 2 years back and I contacted him about it he arranged a date for me to bring the bass over and he fixed it whilst I waited. Thoroughly nice chap and yes he was happy to share some information about his friendship with Stanley Clarke. The best thing to do is give him a call and have a chat I'm confident he will help you out. . The worst that could happen is that you end up having to use a soldering iron and attempt a repair.
It's also worth pointing out , how good a bass sounds depends a great deal on who is playing it ! I've heard fantastic players pick up a Squire and sound like Pino and I've heard poor players on basses that cost £3000 sound like poor players . You have to have reached a certain level of ability to make any bass sound good .
+ 1 on that. Jazzyvee

Well I had heard years back that Norman Watt Roy was the bass player and his Alembic bass was recorded and then processed to get the sound that ended up on the record. The only reference to him on a quick search was this one. http://thequietus.com/articles/04077-frankie-goes-to-hollywood-welcome-to-the-pleasuredome-20th-anniversary Do a search for Norman Watt Roy and you will find an entry. I have no idea how true it is. Maybe someone else may know more. Jazzyvee

I've had this problem on my MB walkabout this year and tried giving it a "good seeing to " with the jacks in the send and return but the only thing that worked was the permanent short jack lead between the send and return sockets. That worked fine for a while but very recently that is not even working and the level keeps fluctuating as does the hum. Seems like it needs to go to a repair centre. Jazzyvee

Smart Car. I can get 2x10 and 1x15 mesa boogie Powerhouse cabs together or a 4x10 Powerhouse on its own in the back, the walkabout head in its gig bag on the front seat and the bass in it's case in the passenger footwell and held in place with the seatbelt. Not something I do often as it's a bit cramped driving but it works. Usually it's just one cab which is much better. Smaller gigs where I can just take the Phil Jones briefcase are even better. :-) Jazzyvee
1. my alembic MK deluxe 5 2. my alembic rogue 5 fretless 3. an alembic series 2 5 4 an alembic series 2 5 fretless 5. an early 80's fretless aria sb1000
Why am I not surprised at the alembic bias Jacko. Let me join you in that bias. 1) Alembic Series II 5 string 2) Alembic Series I 5 String 3) Alembic Series II 4 string short scale 4) Alembic Series I 4 string short scale tenor bass 5) Alembic Series II 5 string Dragon Wing Now should I go to Wonga or to the church for a loan for these. :-)

The Stanley Clarke Signature Alembic bass is not the same bass that Stanley actually plays. But if you wanted to you could buy a series I bass which is the model that Stanley is most known for playing. However because Alembic's at that level are generally customs you could choose to have the same options that Stanley has on one of his personal basses if you wanted to do that. In actual fact the primary difference between the signature and the series basses is in the electronics and pickups not the woodwork. For me the signature bass was an affordable way into the kinds of tones that I was enjoying from his music. I sound like me still unless I'm doing a Stanley Clarke track in which case I like the fact I can get a good representation of his sound to make the track sound authentic. jazzyvee

I'm playing at two Bestival Festivals this year. Camp Bestival http://www.campbestival.net/line-up/2013-line-up/musical-youth/ and the main Bestival on Isle of Wight. http://2013.bestival.net/line-up/artists/musical-youth Never heard of the festivals before so it should be interesting. Jazzyvee
