No standby switch
Standby switches are really useful as a mute, a mute switch does the same (as I think Matamps have). Like end of gig massive feedback, and then silence ritual, rather than the farty fade out from killing the power switch.
From what I understand a fairly large part of true overdriven 'valve sound' stems from the output transformer saturating, which would lead to the question, do you want an ultra clean, hi-fi sounding valve amp, in which case you might be better off with a largeish, modern toroidal output transformer, or do you want classic output trans saturation, in which case maybe an under rated laminated core trans would be better? You could include both on the chassis as switchable options, but with two output transformers you'd probably need a fork lift to get it on top of your 8x10
You don't have to make it big just because it is toroidal. Aside from they are round so their form necessarily takes up a bunch of space. Small transformers just pass less power and cut low end, really not a win for bass. It is like using inefficient speakers so you can crank the amp more without loudness. Have a look at Umph's build thread where he ordered a transformer to go down to 50hz (not considered that low in the scheme of things, higher than the E string fundamental), it is huge.
Simple - gain, bass, mid, treble, passive active input as light a possible
3 band EQ with valves means Fender tone stack generally and that means you can't boost mids. That sucks.
The EBS T90 (6500s rather than KT88s but a reasonable comparison) didn't really take off in the UK, I think people think 90W is too quiet. More on: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry955888 Like others on that thread, I think it's plenty with the right cab. Perhaps that's something that would need to be emphasised in the marketing material
Can squeeze a fair chunk more than 90w out of a pair of KT88s, depending on how you run them (and how you choose to describe your specs in marketing). Potentially they can be run really hard because replacing a pair (or even one, with individual bias) isn't nearly as prohibitively expensive as replacing a matched quad. Fairly sure 300w is giant overkill with modern cabs, if you have a valve amp, you ain't scared of heavy things, and if you want squeaky clean power stage, go SS. Oh, something else to add to my spec, actually decent valves coming stock. Even if I buy new, I have to consider the cost of replacing a bunch of valves, and that points me straight at the second hand market.

Winding on the OT for a line out/DI so it gets the power stage goodness. 2xKT88 power section, so it is a ~100w and will drive, but with KT88 flavour (this is doable, but unusual, make a little market space for yourself there). Individual bias on these two valve (only one extra pot) so don't have to mess with matching. My Ashdown valve head has a feature so that the VU on the front acts as a bias meter, that would cover the above post. Accessible pre valves for valve rolling. No avoiding modern feature that are better just because it isn't how old amps were done (like using toroidal transformers, because they are plain better, even though they don't look like drakes/partridges). Tone stack bypass. Maybe a tone stack other than a Fender type, that would be cool, although the Fender type works great for bass, even Orange are sticking it on their amps, and only scooping the midrange isn't always fun.

Dunno in quite that much detail. I basically asked the same question.
Any word or hints on how the SuperFifteen differs from the vintage? I was gutted when the vintage was taken out of production, so pretty interested in its reincarnation (if thats what infact it is!!!)
Different shape, basically, optimised for solid state amps (as this was how people used it) rather than valve ones. I'd guess basically, deeper narrower box.
Ashton - Beginner combos and giant (cheap) all valve stuff
Do you have the 300w all valve job? I really want to hear about those from someone who has actually plugged into one.

I had mine up for sale for £250 for ages and it didn't go, gave in and ebayed it, made nearly that much. They don't go for much when they do come up, so keep an eye out. Good unit, overkillfor my purpose when I have a VT bass and it covers me.
No, totally different direction! These 10"s don't even have neo magnets, but purely because we're going for a more valve amp friendly motor, which means you can make a ferrite magnet and the resulting frame quite small and light so neo would have only marginal weight benefit and the reduced power compression from typical neo motors isn't relevant with the low power output from valve amps.
Are they Jensen MOD10s? Was toying with loading my ABM 8x10 with those, but figured might as well use guitar cabs. Totally curious as to whether I was on the right track with those.

Any Vintage Speaker Experts Here - Project Cab

I'd ask about on a vintage amps forum, some of them love Goodmans speakers, but might be only certain ones. -
Any Vintage Speaker Experts Here - Project Cab

I reckon best of sticking guitar drivers in and using it as toppy cab. -
'Theft' is also a legal term, and doesn't apply to downloading music, but does to stealing bread. If you buy some bread and program your breadmaker to make perfect copies of your bread, and give them to your friends, your friends aren't thieving the bread either. If that car is in a place where the PRS rules are applicable, then playing that music requires a licence, such as in the garage playing music whilst the mechanics work on it. But it isn't the listener that is in breach, it is the owner of the place. Analogous to the internet, it isn't the one receiving the music who is in breach, but rather the sender.

Download this compilation to which I contributed. Spotify functions to make money for the record label/industry and neatly bypass most of the artists revenue streams, hence even massive ones making very little money. Technology moves on, people have the option to move with it or not, some of those people are artists, most that choose not to move with it will cease to make money from it. Occasionally the really inventive ones will find themselves a niche. I like niche music, so I win.

After that previous thread, and paying attention to the relevant news and such, I'm pretty damn sure downloading isn't illegal in this country, which is why people can't be done for downloading. It is filesharing (specifically the uploading part where you send to someone else) that is illegal. Worse to give than recieve.
a really cheap, plastic little Chinese-made Behringer bass phaser pedal made the bass sound on 'You should be Dancin'.
This pleases me enourmously. Not often the B gets a good mention. -
It isn't an espcially useful way of looking at it, there is a bunch of other factors involved, all else is never equal. 2x10 and a 15 are sort of comparable in sensitivity as a horrific generalisation (volume to power), but there is more to it. Porting a cab adds a bunch of sensitivity, and 15s are often ported and 8x10s often aren't. Have a look here. And browse about the rest of the site, lots of tech nerding there.

There is a lot more air stuck to the 10" speakers than the 15, so the same amount of power will move correspondingly more air. That means it will both be louder and that it will be able to more otal air when it is at maximum. This means the 8x10 will totally drown out the sound of the 15 tearing itself to shreds. Actually, if you had an entirely seperate amp and a really good 15 in a really ideal box, made just to put out lower frequencies than an 8x10 can, so basically a 3015LF loaded subwoofer, possibly a horn one, and ran it with its own amp and crossover, it could add useful content, bt you might as well not use an 8x10 then, and use something more suitable.

Making a line out box to use on a valve amp
Mr. Foxen replied to Christophano's topic in Amps and Cabs
Why not just use a DI box (one with a 30 or 40dB pad - there are several) hanging straight of the speaker output ?
It will make the impedance on the output transformer very unhappy. -
You need 2 cabs to run a Strategy full tilt.
To make me jealous?
NAh, if I swap out the Carlsbro for it my amp pile just touches the ceiling, rather than having an inch gap.
Hmm if the 69er will be the same size as my vintage i may have to consider it! Though the impedence might be an issue :S
I call dibs on the Vintage.

If you are after hi-fi, probably want to start by not limiting to 4x10s.
