1.
Ah - thanks for reminding me about the lacquer! I'll ask him. I'm gradually pinning everything down. He's being very patient with me...
well, finish already! some of us are trying to get in the queue!
 2.
He's literally just replied - if I send him the dimensions of my '71, they'll copy it. :-)
Nice! Did you specify lacquered neck in the end? I'm still hoping that some of the instruments they have already made work for me (I'm impatient, you see and I dread thinking of all the options!!! )
 3.
My bass is the red Jake in the video clip from the previous thread.
What's the neck like? I like Precision necks... and yes, they vary, but they're generally wide and I like the Classic 50 ones a lot, which some consider "chunky".
 4. Do you have one of these? Or have you tried one? What's the neck width/profile like? Is it typical Precision or slimmer?
 5.
It's blindingly obvious she plays with an ease and fluency that can't just be learnt, it has to come naturally...there is playing a bass, and using a bass, lots of folks can do the first one, but not many the second.. That song is five minutes long, and must have a couple of thousand individual 'hits' on the strings... That's like trying to type at 100 words a minute without making one mistake... Come on.
You'd be amazed what people can do when they, well... practice and work at it. If music were my job, I bet I'd be substantially better than I'm now, as I'd be playing quite a bit everyday... I remember an interview with Paco de Lucia talking about talent etc, and he said that sure, some people have a gift, but that he still had to spend hours and hours everyday playing guitar to become that good. I think some people use the excuse "I am not that talented" as a self-justification, when the truth is they just don't want to put in the effort. But this is an entirely different matter now...
 6.
Sex-IST
You must watch "This is Spinal Tap" sometime
 7.
Well, I didn't learn that way (though many people probably wish I had). But seriously, it seems a really weird idea to video yourself doing something and then put it on the net. I have the same concerns with people reporting their every moment on facebook. To me it seems very sad, almost as if these people need to do these things to make themselves feel OK about themselves, or to justify their existence. I can't believe that these people do it out of altruism to help their fellow bassists learn stuff.
live and let live... does it matter what the reason is to post those videos? what's weird to me is that when someone posts about something they love, there's always some who just join in to say "nah, could be better", "nah, not that good". I do not understand what compels someone to post that. see?
 8.
I've had an email chat with Adrian. You can spec pretty much any neck profile you like. Didn't realise they weren't lacquered - I wonder if it's an option? I'm really struggling with specs at the minute. I want a passive PJ that nails the P tone, but there's so many options I don't know what would suit me best. Also, to get my target weight (3.8kg) Adrian says I'd need to go for a chambered body. Just wondering how that would affect tone. So much to consider...
I just sent an email... I find it hard to decide between 3 of the basses in stock (or 6 even!), as I was after a straight simple P, but I know I'd find a bridge pickup quite a useful addition. So I asked a few questions about those basses and about ordering one fresh too... hmmm, we'll see, but if I find it hard to decide between stock basses, a custom order would be a nightmare! decisions, decisions! I asked him about lacquered necks. It's not a deal breaker, and I can always have it lacquered in the future. David Wilson did a great job on my Stingray so I could take it to him.
 9. I tried that bass briefly once, when I bought "me and my bass"'s 75RI Jazz... and I can confirm it is a fantastic Stingray, from a great guy. It almost makes me want to buy a USA Precision just to trade it! This must be one of the very nicest Stingrays I ever played. edit: oh, for sale now? It won't last long!!!!
 10.
Of course, the alternative is to treat yourself to an old skool Trace SMX, select preset 2 and cut through the mix like nothing else. My 3 band 'Ray through these amps blows anything else out of the water
I avoid playing in swimming pools, to start with...
 11. wow, some very attractive instruments there! I wish I could try them, I love the look/specs/price of some of the Jakes in stock! I wonder what the neck is like. I love the wide "Classic 50s" Precision style, and I'd hate a Jazz type neck... Pity the necks are not lacquered either. Hmmm... You are a bad bunch, putting ideas in my mind, and I am indeed looking for a Precision at the moment...
 12.
If I had received comms that made me want to hold the item, then I'd give the guy more than 3.5 hrs before I looked around for someone else and taking it off 'hold'. I'd at least send a message saying I had other 'buyers' and I'd only keep the item on hold for 24hrs if I didn't hear back in that time with proper details to advance the sale. Then the onus would be on the buyer to comply... 3.5 hrs is a bit of an insult, IMO. No wonder the newbie wasn't impressed. I wouldn't expect buyers here to jerk you around... and the whole point of this place for sales is that it isn't the usual market place..??
It is a bit of a short time. I've always waited longer, sometimes holding something for over a week. But I'd do that for someone I believe in. If a regular I'm a bit familiar with asks me to hold something and I don't need the cash quickly, no problem. However, if I have someone without a "history", and makes me think he may not be all that serious, I'd be less likely to wait, especially if I have other offers. Yes, 3 hours is not a lot of time... But if the buyer really wants it all he had to say was express interest. One line. Thirty seconds is all it takes. The seller all he sees is someone who read his reply and chose not to acknowledge his message... If he wants to sell fast, I can see why he wouldn't wait. Don't you? Everytime I've been really interested in something I made sure the seller knew it and that's even with people I may have exchanged PMs with and sort of knew me already.
 13.
I listed some Markbass gear yesterday, it's all sold now but there were around 10 members who PM'd me saying they'd definitely buy one or more ietms, but despite having read the PM's I sent back asking them to confirm, didn't reply. I don't see why there's any onus on the seller to do anything but sell. You can't go into a shop and say 'keep that for me, I'll be back when I feel like it', so why expect to here?
+1
 14.
Something something pyramids something something sphynx something something hieroglyphs?
I've used the guy you refer to a handful of times, many years ago. One was a refret. I was pretty happy with him... Then he started getting "helpers", and I stopped being happy, so I never went back. But when it was just himself it was good, I think.
 15.
The answer is quite simple: just play in rubber gloves and wellies.
wireless!
 16.
You were both guilty of loitering within tent.
One of the best posts I've read in a long time here, well done!
 17.
exactly,he read my reply & all he had to do was say "yes I definitely want the strings & will sort payment as soon as I can " but apparently this was too much trouble for him & as I had another buyer desperate to give me his money it was a no brainer for me.
I can see that. 3.5 hours is very little, but, on the other hand, if I'm really interested in something I make sure the seller knows. If I have a message from the seller and I read it, I reply even if it's a one liner "on the move now, I'll write back later with details" or something, to let him know I'm not ignoring him. If the seller just wants to sell something and has a number of people at the door, I can understand skipping someone who looks like may not be serious (how many times someone has told me they wanted something, only for them to disappear? too many). It takes a minute to reply a one liner. It's ok if you haven't read the message, I understand people do not log in all the time to check, but if you did login and read the message, just press reply. The other person knows you've read it and chose not to reply at that time... don't blame the seller for doing business with someone else if you don't make sure you show interest.
 18.
Thanks again all, I have been playing for a long time and have a few basses and have found my Bill Nash PB57 with added jazz in the bridge does cut well in the mix, however that said i have the HH stingray and can spilt the coils to a jazz configuration and this still at this time is not cutting through. I really think it's a volume down 15 minute chat that will get rid of the issue, i use no effects other than i little compression and with the advice here we should be sounding great once more soon. Some nights its spot on with just plugging in and go so we all need to work together. Cheers again all Rob
yup,if it's too loud in the small room, turning down first sounds like a good move to me
 19.
There is a very good reason why people use singles A LOT.. and by people who could could pretty much justify/afford any bass they care to choose.
singles? Sorry, I'm a little lost now
 20.
There is a reason why P Basses and Jazzes are the workhorses they are across the industry..?
The industry is a very traditionalist one? P&J have probably been used the most compared to any other basses, perhaps purely because they got there first and grew fast. Now they self-perpetuate. They work and it's a sound people are familiar with. However, in 2015, a Stingray is not exactly the new kid on the block. Stingrays work too, and do it very well. There's a reason you can find a Stingray in any music genre
 21.
Yeah, I said it wrong what I meant was; apparently a lot of people either change the nut, or have it readjusted on the e part of the nut to fit a b string in. With the steinberger I have, there doesn't seem to be a need to do it , as the neck is very tense. There is a little looseness which didn't bother me.) Cheers
but it's nothing to do with tense necks or whatever (what do you mean by that?) The B string is (can often be) wider than the slot for the E unless you use an unusually thin B string, so you need to widen up the slot a touch. If you didn't, then it was wider than necessary before, but as long as the string doesn't rattle about in the slot it wouldn't have bothered you.
 22.
I don't know what you mean by this. Unless you are changing from a very low tension EADG set to a much high tension one for BEAD, then the B string is always lower tension than the G string it is replacing.
This. Another common misconception. BEAD is usually quite a bit lower tension than EADG, so if anything you have to loosen up the truss rod to restore relief. Nothing wrong with BEAD, in my opinion, by the way. I don't use it because I use the G more than I would a low D. I do have a Hipshot D-tuner on my E on a few of my basses for drop-D tuning (lots of RATM, some RHCP and other stuff), as it's handy... but I don't miss the low D. I've had a few good 5-string basses but I didn't need them enough to make me ditch my 4-string ones that I prefer either, but if I did need the low B, I'd go 5-string. I can't lose that G string
 23.
Surely, from a tone and playability point of view, a good four strung BEAD is better than a cheap five string?
define better. I don't see getting a decent 5-string being significantly more expensive than getting a decent 4-string. Five string bases are not rare anymore, and there's nothing magical about a bass with an extra string... The low B is thicker, generally lower tension, so you need to make sure your bass setup is better: things you can get away with with thinner strings you can't with a thicker lower tension one that vibrates a lot more widely... But it's nothing special, really.
 24. Well... after a while I tried emailing DiMarzio in the US, again. This time, instead of promising someone will contact me from the UK, they simply ask me to paypal $15 and include the details with the payment: what pickup it was for, what colour, and my address. That was last week. Today, the polepieces arrived.
 25.
Cut nearly all the bass and you should be able to hear yourself better. You'll get a great tone and increase the headroom available to you since the amp isn't using all of it's energy pushing massive lows out of the speakers. Worth pointing out that the RH450 isn't a massively powerful amp anyway. I'm sure many people use them in two guitar bands but some bands are just louder! It could just be that you're struggling to be heard amongst the din of two guitarists and a loud drummer.
If you are not loud enough with a RH450 and two cabs.. in a PRACTICE ROOM... then I'd find another band. That would be insanely loud.
