1.
Our native tounge is a bit mad, anyone who gives it a go is a musician, but I'm not a footballer even though I play every week. I also like cooking but I'm not a cook Musician is most likely one of the few things we can label anyone without defining if they are a paid professional or not.
Any of 'the arts' fall into this IMO, if you paint stuff you are an artist makes no difference if anyone buys it or if it is even for sale does it? Sculpter, painter, glass maker, actor etc can all be done either as a hobby or as a pro and with others or on your own, even acting with the likes of youtube etc
2.
TBH right from the start of 'There's No Other Way' it was pretty obvious Coxon knew what he was doing. It sounded like something Johnny Marr might have played.
I was young and impressionable back then and they just sounded cool to me, thats the trick, knowing your onions but making it look casual
3.
Not knowing it does not mean you are not using it just that you are unaware of why things work, most of get close enough by repitition of playing around the fingerboard which gives us a 6th sense for it (its not a 6th sense its hearing I know). Lots of people know its uncool to be a theory geek and keep it quiet, Blur are a good example IMO right bunch of nerds that kept it quiet until after the glory days of squaring up with the Oasis brothers had passed
I am going to quote myself there as I like this bit
4.
Theory is great but you don't need to know any to be a good musician. I know people with zero knowledge on theory who are fantastic musicians and I know people with degrees in music (and one who was the head of jazz at a prestigious UK music college) who I wouldn't want in my band. As long as you have feel, can groove, enjoy making music and love your instrument you can call yourself a musician. 5.
Cheers technique is prolly a big one for myself, just starting out N'all. And lack of strength in 4th finger oh and factory spec strings (to change soon).
Snap
6. I have been in both camps back and forth for years, a lot of people think that if they dont learn any theory then they will create something no one else has before them, a hidden note or a new scale, they wont I agree with TNIT in that you learn a bit and get all excited for a bit then realise that for each thing you learn it raises 10 more questions! You then either have to embark on an ever lasting quest for knowledge or try and ignor it exists and carry on regardless usually with a nagging feeling for the rest of your playing days. I know more classically trained musicians that are sh*te hot than I do these ones that are limited by it, in fact I only know one person that falls into that bracket and maybe they would just of been a crap player anyway?
7. I won't be able to sit a count the ledger lines and work it out from the C then like I normally do?
8. That was the book I was looking at, I'm not even doing the grades but I would like to test myself starting from 1, could be years or never that my reading would be an 8!
9. I have actually gone right back to my reading for bass book at the moment, started back at page one!
10.
You know that it's been tampered with - wrong neck is proof of this - how do you know what's left is a real Ray and not an OLP/SUB or one of the many other Stingray copies?? I'd steer well clear, especially as you see many Bona Fide Rays for sale here for sensible money on here..
I have seen this before, it has a slab body which rules out all but the original sub bodies and has a pre eb bridge and correct control plate, a photo of the pots would date the preamp and pots so the bridge, battery cover, string ferrules, preamp and controls would be worth almost as much as an ebmm stingray anyway. 77 would not have a 4 bolt neck so the plates neither here nor there and the necks worthless, refin body and a status neck anchored with a period 3 bolt plate and its a £1400 bass imo, so if you can find a cheap status neck or even a fretted/fretless pre eb neck it could be nice! Oh and it needs a pre eb pickguard which will be a £100 if and when one crops up
11. Ta mate, had my first practice with it last night, first practice since the start of november due to my broken arm! Sounded good once I had mastered the art of getting a suitable eq setting and my intonation was passable for most of the night. Love cats sounded great, moondance sounded good but needs work to get more of a jazz vibe going, paloma faith upside down sounded cool and most of the set was possible and sounded like a regular bass overall, it really is all in the fingers! Got the weekend to practice but my rufus reid book still hasnt arrived
12. How easy was grade 1 walman, can you remember?
13. If you take grades to what extent is the sight reading test a full sight read? Is it a no peeking turn the page and play it job or is it more of a recital of a pre practiced part? Just how simple is grade 1 and how complex is grade 8? Thanks
14. Jeez I haven't even got a good memory!
15. Mine is a motorbike If someone suggested a Yamaha bbne5 as a good first 5 string they would be right but only if they had a few grand to spare to buy it, one letter or number different and its a £200 bass! I really have no idea from model to model until we do it can't be a classic, classic amongst Yamaha fans for sure but not a classic bass like a Rick, Ray, P or J
16. I think ritters look rank Tbh I think the term classic only needs to be understood by bass players in this context, I'm sure there are classic golf bats etc but I have no idea of the names of any of them, Joe public know the fender brand and the stratocaster, the Gibson brand maybe but probably not the models? Anything someone like me as your average bass player would know straight away is classic imo which to be honest most of the Yamaha basses are out and maybe status from the more popular but less obvious brands, unless you have an interest in Yamaha basses its all letters and numbers I have a Yamaha fz600n
17. TIM
18.
If you can find one, the Tony Levin sig model is very, very good and cheap too.
I agree, the only thing that let's them down a little is the floppy pick guard but that's easily fixed after that its a bass more akin to more expensive versions
19. I guess this the rarer alnico pickup version too being an 89? If I could get it past the wife if love it
20.
Can't believe yous got my first thread on BC locked up like lads! Was quite proud of that thread
Sorry about that but that guy was off his head on something
21. My blue SR5 is light but the black one is a bit of a beast! I can't imagine anything other than a classic 5 as my main bass at anytime in the future
22.
way to go, Pete Gotta agree.
23. Oh thats gorgeous! I dont mind having a bash with the chisel and files, I can see that the A and D strings will take some control to bow independantly as it is, I need to get this bow now and try As you can see from my sig I dont mind paying out for decent gear so if in a year or twos time I am still playing it as often as I am now then I will be on the hunt for something better, always a fine balance of having something too cheap that it cant be played and putting the person off and being sensible cost wise I guess. I do like the Yamaha silent basses so a used one of those might be the next step.
24. Thru stringing makes things a lot stiffer in my opinion so anyone that finds a set stiff on a thru strung bridge might find they are OK top loaded?
