1. I have a bad wrist though Sarah only had a cast removed just over a week ago so I cant do it as well as I would like yet. I am having lessons but there is no point until I can do it as I am shown which at the moment I know I wont be able to do because of the wrist situation. Hopefully another few weeks and some physio will get me nearer to where I need to be, also I am concious of what I am doing wrong which I think is always the first hurdle. I have set my EUB up as close as I can to an acoustic bass as I dont want to go down the route of electric bass on end, 25 years on electric bass is always going to get in the way though I guess? And I have just ordered the Rufus book to read and absorb some good techniques from
2. I agree with Bilbo really, it also depends on your own ability, if you are a novice (like me on double bass) unless you have a friend handy that can play well and also has no preference for a particular style of neck profile or nut width (and who has such a friend?) then you might as well buy blind and learn to like it or find out over time what it is you dont like and go back once you can play a bit and see what feels comfy now, 99% of the time something like the one you already have! I bought my Double bass from Thomann and have adjusted it to suit me, the choice for cheaper EUB is limited to say the least and I dont know anyone near me that can play one at all so I saved myself a drive to Birmingham on that purchase, time will tell if its a good bass. On the other hand I am good enough on regular bass (just) to be looking at more expensive stuff and know what I am looking for in terms of quality and my choice of playability but even then its not going to be setup to my liking so its still a bit of a leap of faith, thats why some people have multiples of a particular bass, as long as its a Stingray I know I can set it up for me and eliminate the weak G string etc if needs be as the basses are so solid and adjustable.
3. Really nice basses but you might want to do a search of old listings on here for a market price
4. And to flip it back I have found numerous examples saying the lp was finished by Hofstra and Tracy joined after to do the live shows? https://itunes.apple.com/gb/artist/the-waitresses/id348141 We need to put them in a room and make them decide!
5. See I knew this was a tricky one as it has been covered before, if memory serves it may even be a case that she played the recorded version on the record but hofstra had already wrote it and done a rough or previous version of it?
6. Just email them and tell them you want a brand new un played one and see what they say, if they say yes and its been played when it comes you have them bang to rights, on the other hand, and it happens, you might be missing out on a great bass that's been tweaked to perfection by the bass playing member of staff that can't put it down as its the best jazz bass they have ever played and wish they could keep it for them selves!
7.
Way to go Lozz!! Its a bugger I aint got sky, someone feel free to record it and bung on youtube please!
And again plus one on both counts
8. To be honest I have never bought a bass that was perfect for me from a shop or elsewhere as far as setup is concerned so as long as all the bits are there I'm not too bothered, I don't mind if a bass has been tried in the shop either as long a its mint still A lot of people have requested that their item be unopened and the online dealers have met that request a far as I can tell so put that in your order if it bothers you?
9. The transformation after is amazing!
10. I can't tell you how many times I have told people how to clean out an ABM! Strip it down, can of servisol from maplins, get it all in behind the eq sliders and pots then slide and turn push on and off everything as you go, spray in the jack sockets and put a lead in and out, remove the valve and spray the mounting pins on the socket, clean the dirty fan blades (always covered in crap), let it dry fully over night upside down over an old towel, rebuild and enjoy! If you have access to an air line blow all the dust and crap out before you start
11. Ha I bet they do
12. David Hofstra is your man , Tracy did not join until 82 which is when the song became a hit but it was recorded and released in 81 a year before Hofstra left. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Waitresses
13.
Very cool line by Tracy Wormworth...she later played with Sting for a bit. My favourite Xmas line is probably Donny Hathaway's keyboard bass part on 'This Christmas'.
Now last time this came up someone looked into and found that she did not write it but was in the band when it charted etc?
14. I think some of the Staggs have come with very poorly cut nuts mine was actually not that bad in comparison and only took a few mins to file out, in other threads it was indeed the intonation that people were having issues with. I can't really blame the bass for that yet
15. Its one of my favourite of all time! The guy who plays it is some serious jazzer in NY I beleive?
16.
To follow my last comment, buy this DVD, this will answer all of your bass questions! - http://www.amazon.co.uk/DVD-Double-Bass-Techniques-Number/dp/B007HWGKXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356438303&sr=8-1 He is my favorite soloist/tutor!
Thanks Floyd, I have lots of books and dvds to look into buying next year I will check that one out
17. Thanks George that sounds sensible, I have set the bridge to about the same as people are saying in the string height thread, 8mm on the E falling to 6mm on the G, I have filed the nut down on each string to about a mm and its pretty good, easier to play and only has a rattle on the G about the same as it was before filing anyway which is probably a case of skimming the board really but very minor for my ability! Good point about strings too, I will leave it as is until I have new strings in the new year as no one knows what tension these are
18. Ernie ball sledge, very good! I don't think he is a bass player surely he is into wrapping?
19. I will probably struggle to stretch that far at the moment, I will give it a try. I am already using my pinky on its own so I will continue to try and do the 1 23 4 method.
20. Nothing is simple is it! For a beginner what would be the easiest method to give me a reasonable grounding?
21. I watched it all and haven't a clue
22.
A lot of the things we take for granted nowadays such as neck-thru body construction , use of exotic woods , brass bridges and active electronics were all invented and / or pioneered by Alembic and considering that , you begin to realise their massive contribution to the industry .
Thats a list of everything I dislike in a bass other than the electronics and even then I dont like fancy 10 knob para super jizzbucker laptop in the back jobs either! But again if the GAS gets you then thats it, It only takes one Youtube clip to change your mind
23. I love Flea and Stingrays ( I know its not a Stingray but hey we are not stupid!) but I would rather have a Squier of some sort than a Flea bass any day of the week
24. GAS is a terrible thing and it all depends on what you want, I have some nice gear but I dont drink (much), smoke (used to), dont wear branded clothes other than maybe trainers and my car cost £930 3 years ago. If the Alembic gas gets you then you can never say never!
