1. Are you Richard O'brien Lozz, do I win £5?
2. The online specs are meaningless IMO, SR5's are meant to be 10lbs or something, they can be as little as 8.5 and as much as 12, try hanging two bags of sugar off the bottom of your bass at the next gig you do and tell us if its a waste of time asking Nut width is easier I agree although not all basses are equal especially regarding bolt on neck basses, plenty of P's with a J neck out there and visa versa, SR4's are available with a Slo neck (jazz width) pre EB Stingrays had an option of a narrow nut too I beleive, neither have that written on them (maybe the slo but I have never seen one!)
3. Brilliant! Thanks Sarah, It's the clips like that that make me want a proper DB at some point rather than the EUB but hopefully this will give me a bit of a grounding and like I said I am purposefully trying not to play it like a stingray on end or lowering the action right down, I was after an NS design to start with but now I have the Stagg I am actually glad I did as its more realistic to a DB which is what I want I will see how fast my wrist improves then get a few lessons in and go from there but so far I am loving it
4. That's sounds more like a tempting price now! See we have a rule about not commenting on price but sometimes mistakes are made Best of luck with it, gorgeous neck and nice pictures
5.
Same for me with Precisions, Pete. I`m yet to find one, be it Squier, MIM, CIJ, USA that I can`t get on with, once I`ve set it up to my liking. Sure, some are put together better than others - in all the manufacturers - but for me so long as the neck is straight and I can get the action where i want it, I know where I am with one, and can get it do do what I want.
Thats it aint it Lozz P J or MM of any type can be made to play OK, I work at a school where the caretaker both plays and builds guitars as a hobby, he has got 15 elec guitars for the childrens music lessons out of the Maplins or RS catalogue you know the type £69 with an amp etc, He has re strung them and set them all up over a few weeks as and when he got any spare time, all 15 he says are brilliant now, he practices with his band in the school hall and just uses one of the kids guitars now instead of bringing his own in!
6. I have a bad wrist though Sarah only had a cast removed just over a week ago so I cant do it as well as I would like yet. I am having lessons but there is no point until I can do it as I am shown which at the moment I know I wont be able to do because of the wrist situation. Hopefully another few weeks and some physio will get me nearer to where I need to be, also I am concious of what I am doing wrong which I think is always the first hurdle. I have set my EUB up as close as I can to an acoustic bass as I dont want to go down the route of electric bass on end, 25 years on electric bass is always going to get in the way though I guess? And I have just ordered the Rufus book to read and absorb some good techniques from
7. I agree with Bilbo really, it also depends on your own ability, if you are a novice (like me on double bass) unless you have a friend handy that can play well and also has no preference for a particular style of neck profile or nut width (and who has such a friend?) then you might as well buy blind and learn to like it or find out over time what it is you dont like and go back once you can play a bit and see what feels comfy now, 99% of the time something like the one you already have! I bought my Double bass from Thomann and have adjusted it to suit me, the choice for cheaper EUB is limited to say the least and I dont know anyone near me that can play one at all so I saved myself a drive to Birmingham on that purchase, time will tell if its a good bass. On the other hand I am good enough on regular bass (just) to be looking at more expensive stuff and know what I am looking for in terms of quality and my choice of playability but even then its not going to be setup to my liking so its still a bit of a leap of faith, thats why some people have multiples of a particular bass, as long as its a Stingray I know I can set it up for me and eliminate the weak G string etc if needs be as the basses are so solid and adjustable.
8. Really nice basses but you might want to do a search of old listings on here for a market price
9. And to flip it back I have found numerous examples saying the lp was finished by Hofstra and Tracy joined after to do the live shows? https://itunes.apple.com/gb/artist/the-waitresses/id348141 We need to put them in a room and make them decide!
10. See I knew this was a tricky one as it has been covered before, if memory serves it may even be a case that she played the recorded version on the record but hofstra had already wrote it and done a rough or previous version of it?
11. Just email them and tell them you want a brand new un played one and see what they say, if they say yes and its been played when it comes you have them bang to rights, on the other hand, and it happens, you might be missing out on a great bass that's been tweaked to perfection by the bass playing member of staff that can't put it down as its the best jazz bass they have ever played and wish they could keep it for them selves!
12.
Way to go Lozz!! Its a bugger I aint got sky, someone feel free to record it and bung on youtube please!
And again plus one on both counts
13. To be honest I have never bought a bass that was perfect for me from a shop or elsewhere as far as setup is concerned so as long as all the bits are there I'm not too bothered, I don't mind if a bass has been tried in the shop either as long a its mint still A lot of people have requested that their item be unopened and the online dealers have met that request a far as I can tell so put that in your order if it bothers you?
14. The transformation after is amazing!
15. I can't tell you how many times I have told people how to clean out an ABM! Strip it down, can of servisol from maplins, get it all in behind the eq sliders and pots then slide and turn push on and off everything as you go, spray in the jack sockets and put a lead in and out, remove the valve and spray the mounting pins on the socket, clean the dirty fan blades (always covered in crap), let it dry fully over night upside down over an old towel, rebuild and enjoy! If you have access to an air line blow all the dust and crap out before you start
16. Ha I bet they do
17. David Hofstra is your man , Tracy did not join until 82 which is when the song became a hit but it was recorded and released in 81 a year before Hofstra left. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Waitresses
18.
Very cool line by Tracy Wormworth...she later played with Sting for a bit. My favourite Xmas line is probably Donny Hathaway's keyboard bass part on 'This Christmas'.
Now last time this came up someone looked into and found that she did not write it but was in the band when it charted etc?
19. I think some of the Staggs have come with very poorly cut nuts mine was actually not that bad in comparison and only took a few mins to file out, in other threads it was indeed the intonation that people were having issues with. I can't really blame the bass for that yet
20. Its one of my favourite of all time! The guy who plays it is some serious jazzer in NY I beleive?
21.
To follow my last comment, buy this DVD, this will answer all of your bass questions! - http://www.amazon.co.uk/DVD-Double-Bass-Techniques-Number/dp/B007HWGKXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356438303&sr=8-1 He is my favorite soloist/tutor!
Thanks Floyd, I have lots of books and dvds to look into buying next year I will check that one out
22. Thanks George that sounds sensible, I have set the bridge to about the same as people are saying in the string height thread, 8mm on the E falling to 6mm on the G, I have filed the nut down on each string to about a mm and its pretty good, easier to play and only has a rattle on the G about the same as it was before filing anyway which is probably a case of skimming the board really but very minor for my ability! Good point about strings too, I will leave it as is until I have new strings in the new year as no one knows what tension these are
23. Ernie ball sledge, very good! I don't think he is a bass player surely he is into wrapping?
24. I will probably struggle to stretch that far at the moment, I will give it a try. I am already using my pinky on its own so I will continue to try and do the 1 23 4 method.
