1.
So - they're not repeated threads; they're cover versions?
Ha I guess so
 2. I have done originals on the pub scene for a couple of years, its hard work imo. Two 1 hour sets of known songs will get you booked back every few months and the audience will be much more 'up for it' too. Ok the old backroom 3 bands a night gig might have a more open minded audience but in the usual dog and gun playing your own songs with someone shouting for sex on fire between each song will boil your piss
 3. To be fair if you can't play freebird in four years time I'd probably have a look at golf clubs or football boots
 4. Some people forget what it is like to learn a new skill, I am new to double bass and have asked lots of what may appear to be stupid questions, some answers were obvious once I had been given some advice. Thankfully the same old people comparing penis size don't tend to frequent that area of the forum
 5.
i've played through all sorts of sh*t without a buffet.
No buffet no music!
 6. This makes me think of Vic and Bob and "you just wouldn't let it lye" What's the fuss with repeated threads, who cares, we don't have to pay per thread or anything!
Ahaa, well done for spotting that commonly used and gutless tactic so early in your time here! It's a fairly regular occurrence, usually employed by those who have realised they're wrong in what they're arguing but lack the appendages to openly admit it.
7.
Bang on. Talking of which... bring on the pie. I can't wait...
Too right,I will ring you when I'm near home.
 8. I'd play through any old sh*t as long as there is a buffet
 9. Who are you trying to convice, us or yourself?
 10. Yep, anyone who says they are a one trick pony needs to practice their own techniques more I'm no virtuoso but some people rely on the tone controls and amp setting to try and get their sound, the only thing I do from my basic sound for the night is cut a bit of treble when I'm using a pick and maybe add a touch if using the old thumb! Have you seen Ed friedlands ray clips?
 11.
But lacking flip-up battery compartments and having no hum-cancelling phantom coil for single-coil mode..
I keep a multitool in my gear bag and always keep at least one 9v battery spare so its not a massive issue, never had a battery go completely mid song either. The true single coil is a thing of legend and to be honest I don't like my phantom coils as there is a tiny delay added imo, the only time I go to single coil is if I can't cut through at all. Played a 2+ hour set last night covering every genre going and I think any bass player in the audience would of agreed that even though it might not be the exact sound they would want for their own originals it did exactly what it says on the tin, good solid sound for funk, disco, indie, pop, r&b, rock and anything else I have forgotten. Proper gigging bass
 12.
I use a clip-on mini tuner on the bridge, which works fine. Plugged in I use a TC Electronic Polytune, which is impressively instantaneous!
And me clip on isn't the most accurate though but good enough for my ears!
 13. The geek in me wants to know where the extra fret marker came from?
 14.
Indeed I have :/ some lovelies in there
15. Teal is one of the colours that looks equally as good with either a rosewood or maple board, I think it makes the SR5 look more like a Stingray too for some reason
 16. Have you looked at the pre EB porn thread yet Marcus!
 17.
GAS-free since I got my 1996 SR5. Transparant teal green, birdseye maple neck. It's love I tell ya.
Teal is the best colour and with maple too, my main bass was teal SR4 for ten years until I traded it on here for my black SR5.
 18. I have been having a cheeky read too I am getting OK with the bow now actually but my duff wrist is causing me grief again
 19.
Did they do fivers then?
Yes '87 onwards, thats where the 6 bolt neck, truss rod adjusting wheel and 3 band EQ came from. Early ones are Alnico pickup equipped too for full Ray goodness
 20. I'd hunt for a nice late 80s or early 90s one, six bolt neck but two eq, nice figured neck etc
 21. John Deacon, Nate Watts......
 22. Have you checked out the pre eb thread Marcus?
 23.
There's very good reasons for both approaches to exist. When I'm mixing multi-band gigs where I don't know the bassist and the backline, I'll default to using a DI box and take the signal before the amp unless the player requests otherwise. For me as an engineer, that means I know that even if the amp is crap, unreliable, gets its settings fiddled with by less educated people sharing rigs or whatever, I've got a consistent and reliable signal coming to FOH anyway. If (for example) somebody like BRX rolled up who obviously knew his rig and his tones and had a setup that lent itself to me taking a post processing signal I'd be more than obliging - it only takes seconds to pull an XLR out of a DI box and throw it into somebody's rack/pedalboard/whatever. I think you'll find that most FOH guys would love to work with a band to create the perfect FOH mix but the realities of gigging rarely allow for that luxury. The quality of their work is their calling card just as your performance is for you and they'll be looking for the best mix they can achieve given the time and resources available to them. Sometimes that means compromises have to be made somewhere, but with a bit of communication everybody can have their input and end up (reasonably) happy!
I agree with all of this If I had my own bass tech and sound crew I would love to spend hours crafting a great sound but in reality I'm happy with a generic 'Good sound' which as we know is subjective anyway. I hear JTUK and BRX loud and clear I really do but we only have to see footage of big names like Muse and the Chili peppers to know that FX live at a different venue every night cant have mixed outcomes even with a dedicated pro team at the helm,I love Flea but feck me does he have some sh*te sounds live
