1. I like a nice Tobias, never heard a bad one live
 2. Hi sorry missed this, my tabs are about 4.5mm thick, I have cut the wing slots out to about 6mm and added three folds of cereal box
 3. Only the real ones appear to get that honey coloured neck over time, all the cheaper version I have seen have had either a pasty white neck or a painted neck, the weight can sometimes make a bass feel more proper, that is true of many things in life like watches etc. The control knobs/pots felt cheap on all the cheaper versions I have tried and the main difference is the body edges, on most budget instruments they are sharp edged from the cnc which is good compared to tat of yester year but all hand finished basses (try a true custom like a GB or Overwater etc) have that rolled edge that machines cant do easily if at all. IMO Like it or not we do get an extra bit of enjoyment from owning the real thing so if it's enjoyment you want I'd say go for the real deal On the other hand the pre EBs are better anyway
 4.
Past performance is no guarantee of future results...
Ha I was thinking similar but we like what we like, sometimes change what we like and then change back again. Freebird can be played on any timmo and just to fully contradict myself none of my uprights are 5 string even though Gedo were selling the 5 string version of mine for £250 less than the four! Lol
 5.
If the gear was so bad that I'd need to take my own then I wouldn't be using that rehearsal studio. Anyway, it's just a rehearsal, get over it.
I agree and I like tnts anyway
 6. Just never say never, I was more anti five strings than ET above, now I have two, never gig the others!
 7.
But no one person has to do it all on one bass. You can use what you like, or at least what the producer likes.
Then there is the bass synth
 8.
I'm surprised about the number of people suggesting it's OK to stop mid-song. During rehearsals, yes, but during a gig I used to think it was a no-brainer to carry on and recover as best you can. Seems I was wrong.
Ooh never mid song! False start with a light hearted blame the drummer for starting in the wrong key joke at 1 in 10 gigs is live music, stopping mid song is a car crash!
 9.
I play 4's, quite fancy trying a 5 - will it make me a better player?
It has me 100% certain about it but its not for all, I won't be going back and since I broke my wrist and am struggling even with five a six looks more interesting than ever, we could put sir duke back in the set!
 10.
Very likely but the great majority was still done on four strings.
And all could of been done on a five but not on a four except the stuff done on a six stuff
 11.
... and the great majority of recorded music over the last 60 years has used a four string bass.
Quite a bit has been recorded on fives even if the live shows were not too
 12.
Ahh ok.Thanks for the replies. Not something a beginner should worry themselves about then.I haven`t really noticed them until a few months ago.But when you take up a new hobby, you tend to notice things more.Like i always listen to the bassline closer than i used to when listening to music
Lots of people start on a five these days, probably easier if its something you want to do anyway.
 13. Good post BRX but you forget to say if they are better or not
 14. I like the look of them a lot!
 15.
Some players like to get down below the bottom E, so a fiver fits there. Others like to get up into guitar territory or play chords, so a sixer fits there. Some others don't want the low B but like the idea of chords and notes above a G, so a fiver tuned EADGC fits there.
I don't do any of those thing very often but I do play across the board making things easier and also can play songs in different keys much easier if playing with different bands playing the same songs but in different keys.
 16. Oh and yes five is better usually played by better players
 17. I once posted this question so don't be too harsh on him
 18.
IMO if you make it to the end of the first bar then you should press on to the end.
I do agree unless its a key change balls up that can't be hidden or a guitar so far out of tune its painful.
 19.
If you make a pigs bollock of the 1st 10 seconds, by all means, call a halt and start again, make a joke of it, but once you're in and going then keep going to the end, I've switched guitars mid verse after a string break and nobody noticed, except the bass player, who looked over and wondered how my strat turned into an SG. Drawing attention to your mistakes draws attention to them, people won't notice if you don't tell them.
I agree, if you do lots of covers with more than one band and in different keys in think its fair to start in the wrong key and have to have a rewind as the OP calls it, if you are generally good for the rest of the set its ok and a good front person should be able to lighten the mood! As long as its not every other song though.
 20.
Too many strings?
No they come with the correct amount, I can't see anywhere to attach another?
 21.
+1 This paired with my stingray 5 is musical nirvana :-)
Why would anyone use anything else?
 22.
Focus' are great! As many here have said, they're surprisingly spacious. I've had 2 rcf 310's with stands, a 24 channel mixing desk, mark bass 210, Aguilar head, cables, lights, bass and a drum kit! I love mine, though when I get the money saved up I might get a 1.6 diesel version. Has any one here got one? What are the engines like for reliability and efficiency? Dan
Mine is a 1.6 diesel but in zetec spec, best of everything IMO. Getting more and more to the gallon as the cold weather is finally going a bit, 52mpg last time I looked and that's all short runs, £30 to tax, cheap to insure compared to similar spec cars. I gather a lot of the problems noted are down to people trying to service them on a budget which ruins them!
 23. Really grinds your gears don't it!
 24. 9.2 shuttle max is where its at
