1.
That's so Prog. And I mean it in a good way. I'd love a Shergold 12 string. I have a Baldwin, so same lineage, but it's too fragile to gig regularly)
I used to be in Genesis tribute bands - also just out of shot, Moog Taurus bass pedals, an acoustic 12-string and a Ricky 4001. I've kept the Shergold 12/4 as it's such a good 12-string guitar.
 2.
Afraid not. Not sure if the photos have a date as they were taken as soon as i got it. Checked and photos aren't dated but looking at reference points from other pics i have and when i started playing i think this might be 78. It was my 2nd bass after a Columbas Jazz. I started playing in 76 and would have had the Columbas about 2yrs before buying the Shergold. Latest would be late 78 / early 79. It was so long ago and a bit heavy for me. Traded it for an Aria SB1000. Cost me £630. That bit i can remember LOL I remember the conversations with Shergold (not sure who i was talking to) and they said they didn't make 8 strings altho they were looking at the possibilty. At that time Mike Rutherford was a big part of it and he played an 8 string bass and i think they wanted Mike to use one they had designed along with the twin neck he had. They suggested to me that they didn't have their systems set up for one as they didn't make full custom basses but could adapt their existing 6 string neck if that would be ok to me. Being young and naive i went with it. It was a great bass to play. The necks were fantastic and they had that distinct Shergold sound. Dave
Interesting story Dave, thanks for sharing. My 4/8 double neck had a great 4-string neck, exactly what you'd expect from Shergold. The 8-string was a bit difficult though. The serial number was 8401, following their convention for the first two numbers being the number of strings per neck. The -01 doesn't necessarily mean it was the first one, as your story supports, but it's a curious theory. As far as I can remember Mike Rutherford is credited with using an 8-string on Wind & Wuthering and Seconds Out, but the songs it's used in aren't mentioned. The only overlap between those two albums is Afterglow, which doesn't sound like an 8 to me. Happy to be proved wrong though!
 3.
Let's have a look then
...mister benn quick change special effect...
 4.
Yep i had the first 8 string they did. Because they hadn't made one before they suggested adapting the 6 string they had and here it as my twin neck 4 & 8 from circa 1978 -1980 if memory serves me right. Might have been a bit earlier. Dave
Any idea what the serial number was on that one Dave?
 5. Hah, fair enough! Wonder my Shazam on my phone didn't clock them? Listened to the album on Spotify today, some of it fantastic, some of it a bit too "souly soul" for me. 10+ minute of Cantaloupe Island towards the end, mind you...
 6. Those aren't Shergolds. This however (Custom Double bass/12-string just out of shot)
 7.
There was another version they recorded that didn't have the intro. I think the one in the mixtape was an alternate take. It's a cracking bass intro. Glad the alternate version is available out there.
Thanks for your help - I'd not heard of the band before. Any other tips? I can see The Music City Sessions on Spotify which I'll check out later.
 8.
I think i'll have google Translate arrested
This "J'étais là, immobile et glacé" means "there I was sitting eating and ice cream". Ice cream is mentioned in "The Facts of Life" from Naked. So, Talking Heads were a massive influence on JP Sartre.
 9.
I'm wondering if the bit before the guitar is a different song though.
Which is clearly wrong now I've listened to the clip you posted
 10.
Shazam suggests that it is Confusion - The Two Things In One once the guitar kicks in...
My Shazam didn't like it. Thanks - I'll investigate further. I'm wondering if the bit before the guitar is a different song though.
 11. Any idea who the player and artist is at the 5m10s mark in this mixtape please? I like. https://www.mixcloud.com/harold-heath2/harold-heath-mild-peril-volume-1/ Ta!
 12. Stop Making Sense was the first record I bought with my own pocket money, and I have a massive soft spot for TW still - she was a huge influence for the pre-bassist me for tone, simplicity, timing. I wish I could write a line as perfectly simple as Once In A Lifetime (she probably didn't, but you know).
 13.
Thanks chaps. I confess I had never heard of a bitcrusher before this either. Starting to feel a bit out of touch!
I've got three. Sounds brilliant. Practical use = nil
 14. Also, "why the hell are you wearing those stupid gloves". Answer at 4m30s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOVGrGBeqiI
 15. Here's Scott Devine's gloves story: http://www.scottsbasslessons.com/odds-and-sods/the-gloves
 16. Just seen on Jakko Jakszyk's social media that John Wetton died earlier today. Sad times for Crim bass players : (
 17. Maybe head to Stairway To Kevin, his workshop is above Regent Sounds on Denmark St. He's a lovely chap and was previously the guitar tech at Wunjo's. Also if it's local for you, try Guitar Aid in Putney.
 18. Another relative obscurity, this from the late 80s [s]Yes[/s] ABWH album. Lovely video. You'll find a live version but that's Jeff Berlin.
 19. And this from BLUE Nights (with Bruford, Chris Botti, David Torn) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0C7nZ02UiA
 20. On top of Crim and PG, with whom I've seen Tony Levin many times there's a load more outside stuff he's done. The BLS albums are great. This always comes with me when I'm testing a new hifi amp or speakers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfbdBZO9td0
 21.
Always liked the bass on this, comes in after about 1 min
Is that the original? John Giblin if so. (TLev is only on I Don't Remember on PG3). Lovely stuff either way!
 22.
You could tell them you're Trans, but it's your night off.
I thought maybe I could go in my regular attire but say I'm wearing ladies underwear. But then realised that's probably described most of basschat
 23.
Are you a non-binary person?
I can play guitar or bass. Sounds a bit binary to me.
 24. Currently on gumtree... "Three ladies - a singer, drummer and guitarist/bassist (me) are forming a band! We're looking for a fourth lady/non-binary person who could ideally switch between guitar and bass. Technical proficiency isn't important. We're based in London (across loads of different areas). Some of our favourite bands are X ray Spex, The Slits, Talking Heads, Bowie, Warpaint, Mac Demarco ... and thousands of others. Please send a message if you'd like to jam with us." I'm a fairly bad guitarist living in one of London's many different areas. Should I apply?
 25.
Totally Mexico.
Isn't it. With this, and another gem I found yesterday (see below), I had to dig out the Nathan Barley episode where Dan Ashcroft does his "Don't you see? You're all idiots!" speech. (Which is funny because I've seen Julian Barratt at numerous jazz gigs with the exact same bewildered look on his face, eg the looping effects-laden solo tuba player who supported Polar Bear once at Spitz, ah happy days) That other article. See http://www.etmgroup.co.uk/2017/01/10/coming-soon-greenwood/ but this text is from the soft launch email I received. "Greenwood is set to become Victoria’s premier drinking and dining destination, with an in-house barbershop courtesy of Sharps Barber and Shop and walk-in brow bar from Blink Brow Bar. Upstairs hosts the Sports Lounge at Greenwood, showing all domestic and international sports, as well as featuring an American 8-ball pool table and two Shuffleboards" My assurance is that there can only be a finite amount of hipster dickheads around to lap up this kind of thing
