  1. But just like going out on the bike this winter and being aware through your experience, It sounds like you already have a good awareness of the greasy leaves and the cats eyes that crop up in the band situation 👍 Edit - There are people you know that you probably would want on the back of your bike.
  2. Great comments here, Skinnyman summed it up for me. I have had similar issues in the past, but one thing we always did as a band was agree on what version of the song we were learning. The Single as played by the BBC 🙂 ? album version. or maybe specific Radio edit? Hopefully everyone had done their homework come rehearsal day, but my Mrs (singer ) would always have a tape or CD player there to iron out any points that individuals had forgot. That way there is no arguement. To back that up I would get drummer to agree to stick to the record. Mistakes happen, Vocalist may drop a verse etc or guitar may forget the bridge ? Then as a one off thats where everyones musicianship steps in. The ability to use your ears and know where to jump. This is so the audience don't even know something has happened. Lastly Volume, my pet hate. Agree that it is too loud in the rehearsal room and you can't continue like this. and at gigs look at the venue and comment to each other that we'll need to keep it down in here due to people eating and wanting to talking. We would have a quiet set 1 and then a louder bopping 2nd -3rd as required. We would also supply recorded dinner music so we did not always have to play while people were eating and socialising at the start of the evening.
  3. Just to re cap on pfretrock's wiring diagrams - how have you wired these two pairs of pups ? could you draw this out for us (me) just want to check back over what i did on my five string pictured above. My pups do have reversed poles on each pair, so a north and a south on each set, but as i later changed from vol, tone vol, tone to installing a pup balance pot So this is now Vol, balance and tone, tone. Could someone just reasure me to how this should be wired and i'll go check and draw mine out. I just wondered but i guess if wrong it would either be a dead short or hum. I was thinking of changing this back to my original pot layout but I always find i prefer any bass with two pups to have them both on full anyway 😄 the two controls interacted and each tone also affects output of the overall sound. Cheers
  4. That sounds like a plan Bunny That was when we started enjoying it more, a gig every other week seemed to be a good balance. I would settle now for a small 60's band just playing the bass - someone else can do the P.A. and lighting duties, No chasing the gigs or running the Van, Bliss.
  5. Hi Blue, glad to hear you are well and easing your way back into the madness, Like most of you guys Bass is what makes life fun. I took early retirement 5 years ago, don't know where that time went 65 now. I'm with Mr Finn my attitude has changed and now more selective. Think my first paid function gig was 1974. Everything has changed now, back then you could drive over and put a card in someones hand the phone would always ring. and you just needed a couple of good agents who knew the business to get you into places you didn't know. Now the customer doesn't know from a website if your are genuinly a local band or a bunch of deps based 200 miles away. i don't want to spend hours managing a band persona on line (facebook twitter etc) when the best website gets the gig and maybe not the best band. So Big band jazz is my main outlet now and enjoying it. No bad back, no Van on the drive, No web site to maintain with all that entails, (pictures, video, recordings), and No tax man to worry about Take it east out there guys
  6. I do like their sound and back catalogue. Like many of you on BC who play or have played in a basic Guitar / Bass / Drum setup There is knowhere to hide and your contribution has to be very relevant to the song. So he gets my vote without having to dissect his every track.
  7. I can recommend the Stellartone Tone Styler Passive Tone Control, as a direct replacement, they give a broader range of tones in increments than the the old pots with fixed Cap' that drops off a cliff after just a fraction of a turn. You can look them up on the Bassdirect site - other establishments may keep them.
  8. Very Rare - The Bikini Atoll prototype, Leo went back to the traditional passive Tele basses in the mid 50's after the test as he found the early active models didn't stand up well to the initial blast.
  9. The Saga continues - having posted the wooden contraption video to our guitarist, saying I have him sorted for Christmas. He replied saying he has one in the roof he bought back in the late 50's. Today he proved it. Just to show there isn't much that is new in the world these days.
  10. Just to add to the debate, I watched the Freddie tribute concert again last night and noticed all three precisions i saw him playing had high mass bridges fitted, maybe he has a neck dive issue ? just saying 😁
  11. two hundred quids worth of hardware on that bass Owen
  12. Here is my effort to achieeve this, made with a little help from the boys at Shuker central
  13. You got me going now - trying to find that i came across this and now know what to get my guitarist for christmas 😁
  14. Interesting input guys, better vintage tone ? what is that - rather subjective i agree. But I can understand why a high mass bridge will anchor the tone and give a clear fundamental that is more distinct. after all you must all agree if you have ever used a tuning fork - strike it, then ground the the end hard down on a solid surface . Hey ! presto you can now hear the note loud and clear. That is what a high mass bridge will do to help your strings pick up the natural tone of your wooden bass and better transfer that signature frequency to the strings that in turn will be amplified via your pick ups. may be this all comes back to the Old tone wood debate, A well constructed bass with seasoned woods, body and neck will resonate better than cheaper cuts. and the high mass bridge is simply confirming - you can't make a silk purse from a sows ear. ?????
  15. A huge range of sounds there fron one PUP. I have long had the Zoot GAS.
  16. Just adding my +1 for going for a Fender Custom Shop bass. I bought a second hand one about 3 years ago, with all the case candy almost like an ex demo condition, after considering it to be the best option for getting a good player that will hold its value rather than being ripped off by a BITSA bass that may or maynot be what it seems i.e 60's or 70's model dead spots and weighing a ton. I paid £2250 for a 62P SB relic. So saving almost a grand on a new one. Very happy with it nice quarter sawn neck just great all round, now strung with Labella flats 🥰 There have been a few up on here lately nice white one. all the best with your search
  17. I Just purchased a Bravewood - 64 Sonic blue fretless jazz from Owen. with his usual attention to making the process smooth and painless, good communication and well packaged. It arrived covered in scratches and dents and looked like it was found in a canel Just as I had hoped, lovely jubbly 😍
  18. The blue fretless is mine Owen, why do you own just about every bit of kit i have ever lusted after? PM on its way
  19. OK thanks guys - Just naturally taking note when things there to protect you say "Step away from the computer" 😕
  20. Just to say as I posted a while back and others since then - My new computor is preventing me from accessing Bass Direct due to a Trojan threat. Suggest you guys at BD have a look at what on your site is sounding the alarm bells on peoples security systems. I can access every other bass shop no problem, which may = loss of revenue if a large number of people are having similar problems. its interfering with my dailey browes of your lovely basses 🙁
  21. There a couple of old threads on this subject worth looking up. As an Electrical engineer and there are a few on here speaking some sense, I would seriously advise you not to take risk and get your gear regularly checked and tested. Its all about due diligence, and certificates should show a history of that equipment having been checked. It is not about buying a machine and pressing a button, Its about inspection and understanding what can go wrong and looking for it. If you are serious about your Band and your performance why risk your lives and potential earnings by calling a venues bluff and possibly getting turned away having traveled miles to get there.
  22. Always have mids cut on my amp to some degree, i'm just fingers only now but like the cut, loved the Markbass scoop and now the Mesa D800 mid cut. But also have preferred onboard active Para mid controls so i can adjust on the fly. East pre-amps are great for this. But found you will need those mids for outdoor gigs Marques etc, or you run out of steam and just get lost without the punch.
  23. Or a sound engineer that loves Kick drum
  24. This may not be a problem with Bass Direct, unless usual delay not communicated. Other shops I have sold through have made it clear that they have legal obligations to the buyer including a cooling off period maybe a week just in case they return it with an issue, then money clearance etc. So even if you see it on their site as sold you may expect a two week wait a least for them to then send you the money. Does this sound like your experience.
