But is it worth every penny in your bank account..?
I think it's unlikely they'd happily exchange such a beautiful instrument for the amount I have in my account lol. However, i have recently finished putting money away for when my ACG is complete, so I might start putting money away for one of these too!

Sounds great! This video is a real eye-opener. It really shows the amount of work, skill, time and quality of materials that go into these stunning instruments. Worth every penny in my eyes! http://youtu.be/Q588Rr7Yt-g

Thomann are great for customer service and stock but I have found on a number of occasions that their prices are way out. This is likely to do with some 'creative' interpretation of the currency exchange rate on their website. I clicked to purchase an item that was listed at £305 but by the time I'd got through the buying process the amount had gone up to £323. Luckily, I am a regularly customer and had a number of vouchers for reviewing the previous products I'd purchased which brought the price back down but for new/non-regular customers, I think their actual purchasing prices can often be a little difficult to predict.
DeLa plays some great stuff on this acoustic version of 'No Such Thing': FWIW I much prefer the first 2 Mayer records to anything he's done since, he sounded much better when his head was only half way up his own arse....
And some great playing in this too, although the balance and mix is all wrong with acoustic and bass and nothing else IMO... http://youtu.be/MnJ-cXfUves I agree that the earlier albums were great but Try! is really good. The LoFi Masters version of Love Soon has some nice playing on it too :-) http://youtu.be/Lth0TL5fOgg
If money was no object, would you by the Fodera or a vintage Fender (I would image it would probably be early 70s for this money)?
I'd give Fodera my money without a second thought. Whilst the magic and mass appeal of an old Fender is cool, Leo isn't around to make that bass for me and he certainly won't be benefiting from me blowing $4000 on one second-hand. I'd much rather support a living, passionate luthier who is trying to craft their legacy by building exquisite boutique instruments to an individual's specifications. I love the idea that two people's thoughts on design, specifications, wood combinations, musical approaches and what they individually hope to get from the instrument come together to create something unique and special in mutual and differing ways for both parties. I'd never get that by spending £100,000 or even £100m on an old vintage Fender and that's worth more than being able to tell the guys at rehearsal that I've got 'an old proper Fender' locked away and insured to high heaven. This is also the reason I ordered an ACG rather than buying something 'off the peg'...

The Next Generation Of Players To Inspire.....?
Not my thing at all. What kind of music is this? It's not rock and roll or pop. It's not funk,it's not funky. Is it some kind of progressive jazz? Blue
No idea I'm afraid. I suppose if it's not really your thing, then there's no need to worry about what it is! At least you were open-minded to have a listen. I'm all for listening to anything once and if it's not your bag, fair enough :-) -
I think that this is a really nice bass. Can't really see the issue with the price. There are other high-end bass manufacturers like Sadowsky, Overwater etc that copy the humble precision and charge a similar price to the $4000 Fodera are asking for this. It's probably a Fodera fanboy-targeting bass but these guys clearly know their product and market and good on them for making a living out of something they're clearly super passionate about!

Starting a band without a gigging audience in mind
It's unusual to only get 3days. Didn't Gary Moore learn the Thin Lizzy set on the plane on the way to the concert?
Artist and previous bass player had a bust up and I had played with the drummer for years at college and he knew I could do the job, so I got the call :-) -
Ok, here's my challenge, prove it. See what I mean. Unless you we're reading charts or his back catalog was 12 songs,I say no way. With all due respect. Blue
Short of asking him to sign up to basschat just to settle some sort of schoolyard argument you wish to start, it's impossible to prove and this will no doubt allow you to 'validate' your 'point'. Respectfully, you're entitled to an opinion and believe what you like but that doesn't make you right. His back catalogue was 40 tracks, which I learnt by transcribing charts with a few bits of notation for characteristic rhythmic phrases etc from his CDs before memorising them. We then ironed out the details of the set in the 7 hour rehearsal session and went to play the gig. Granted, it was an intense 3 days to get all the charts written and memorised (I got very little sleep/rest), followed by the pressure of the rehearsal and gig (which was at a blues club with a fair few people attending) but word of mouth spread and as a result of being professional and turning up prepared and nailing the gig, I got a call from the drummer asking to dep for his functions band as they'd lost their bass player. I got two weeks to learn their 50 song set which was a fair bit easier but transcribing, playing from memory and having the ability to play at a decent standard are elements of my playing that I've been crafting for years and they just happened to culminate to help me compete those specific tasks. Additionally, im under no illusion that other guys might not want to put as much time into crafting those skills and that's cool too but I think it's a tad ironic for you to be so dismissive of hard work in respect of my situation saying 'it's not possible', 'I challenge you to prove it' etc when you are so defensive when people claim you don't put just as much dedication and time into crafting your covers band... -
That's a tough one. First of all, I contend that most "start ups" in The States never see their first gig. Another point, there are really talented musicians even pros that are not real quick with learning new material. I can't learn 60 songs I don't know in 8 hours and be gig ready, And I'll challenge those that say they can. Blue
I've done this before and I imagine I'm not alone. Had to learn an artist's entire back catalogue in 3 days, then had a full day Friday rehearsal (7 hours) before the Saturday gig which was a lengthy drive away. But you've missed the point. You don't go to a rehearsal to learn the songs. You agree the set, learn the songs (structures, keys, important features) and then you have a rehearsal to polish the performance. -
Never heard of any of those people. Are they in the same league as Chuck Rainy, Larry Graham, Rocco Prestia or are they more pop based? Blue
Michael League is great! I certainly would describe Snarly Puppy as 'pop', so you might enjoy it! http://youtu.be/L_XJ_s5IsQc For me, Matt Garrison, Janek Gwizdala, Michael League and MonoNeon are top of the 'inspirational' list and watching their playing inspires me to play and practice harder :-) -
Another possible option, is to use a Hipshot X tender, like wot I do. It means I play a 4 string, but there are only 3 notes I don't have that a 5er does.
if im honest, I'm always surprised that people don't do this! I think the lowest note I've ever HAD to play was a D and that would be fine with the hipshot. Personally, my 5 string is E-C and I just tune the E down to D if I need the bottom range :-)

Gigging bassists... how many basses do you own?
skej21 replied to The-Ox's topic in General Discussion
3 basses. One for practice and composing (5 string, E to C) and a P and a J. Precision gets used the majority of the time for gigs, I occasionally take the Jazz out. 85% of time spent with a bass in hand I'm playing the 5 string though, hence the ACG order :-) -

Stunning!! Absolutely stunning!! The photos of this bass on the ACG website don't do it justice! The quality of the woods and craftmanship is more than evident in your photos. That's a really beautiful bass.
-
Theres a difference between playing with musicians who (rightly) insist on using ear protection and playing with inconsiderate morons who use it as an excuse to max out their ridiculous 'you'd never need anything this big' amp and blow everyone's faces off in the rehearsal room. Luckily, I've never had an experience with the latter because I would never end up playing for a band with people who were that inconsiderate of the music!
Excellent! I love how SC basses are becoming more and more common, great to see a mass produced one of this style enter the market at what Im sure will be a brilliant price
Agreed. I love the fact that modern shapes and single cut basses are becoming more common. I love how much they seem to divide opinion too :-)
-
I hope there won't be a six string version as I'll have to have one. Never been big fan of Ibanez except for their six string SR basses, especially the Prestige's. Those fit me like no other sixers did/do.
I feel the same but I think that's a combination of the 16.5mm narrow string spacing and the neck profile. This Singlecut model (for some reason!) has gone away from the spec and has 18mm string spacing... That alone would put me off! Love the look of it but owning an SR605 and playing the BTB 6 string models regularly (17mm spacing on 6 strings), I wouldn't want anything more than 17mm. Shame as I REALLY like the look of it!!
-
Got to be said, it's nice that they listened to their customers! People have been asking for this for AGES! Looks smart but the string spacing is too wide for my liking...

That's just beautiful! -
Here's my three Single Cuts. I personally love the look of single cut basses, but can totally accept the love them or hate them aspect of the design, but there's plenty other more established designs out there that are equally marmite as far as I'm concerned, the only basses that really don't seem to divide people, as far as looks go are common or garden Precision and Jazz Basses. The design, probably makes for a larger area of contact between the neck and body, but I'm not sure it really makes that much difference, I just like the look of them. If you don't, don't look at them Eude
I was never a fan of SC basses until I stumbled across a Matt Garrison video. Fell in love with his Fodera and that started me looking at other SC basses and then came across the ACG Finn SC R Type. Instantly put in an order and can't wait for it to arrive. For me, any tonal benefit is negligible, it's purely an aesthetic preference, which I happen to love! Your ACG Finn SC classic is beautiful!!

Brown eyed girl?!

Completely agree with that. For the approximate price of a Fender AV bass you can spec a custom ACG! No brainer really.
