1.
..., don't really like watching live music anymore.
Me either...odd that, used to love it. But now, all I want to do is PLAY it, not WATCH it. Shame, I would probably learn from it. I also don't actually sit and listen to music much, either. Possibly a hangover from the 17 years off I took from music, completely. No basses, no CDs, no going down the pub, even. When I first gotback into it, someone said about doing 'Sweet Child O'Mine', and I'd never heard of it... Embarrasing! Going to the blues night at Tavistock Wharf next week, though...must put oneself about a bit more!
2.
I'm not going to argue with that top 3
+1 Sorry I'm late!
3.
But nobody in a correct, professional, versatile, state of mind takes a 4 string bass to gig, where they know that a 5/6/7 will offer AND deliver so much more
Simply not so...different strokes, is all. 4-stringers are in no way limited, just one form of the instrument. The four is 'traditional'. That does not equate to 'limited'. Ask Jaco and Victor Wooten, for example... I wouldn't get anything from the extra strings/frets/pickups myself. Others can and do. Doesn't make either one the standard. By that outlook, everyone should also be using 7-string guitars. They don't. Why? Who knows, I'm no guitarist!
4. Some good takes on this. My view is that vintage is fine if you've the wonga. A tatty, well-played bass is likely to be one that you'd play and go 'whoa! that's nice!' whereas a pristine '64 Sonic Blue P might be pristine and still in its case because it's an absolute dog... I have been through a few basses that were not original to me. A '68 Jazz/mint/dog. A '69 Telecaster/beat to crap/amazing. '96 51RI/mint/amazing. 80s Tokai P/pristine/amazing. New ones: 2xStd Jazz - nice, but....Warwick Streamer Std 5 - see below...there's no telling, really. Mainly, I buy what I can afford new, because, in the main, I like my basses to be mine. I got the 51RI from Mickeyboro of this parish, we did a swap between that and a Warwick Streamer Standard 5 that I bought new-old-stock but didn't get on with. I wasn't expecting a gem, just a good backup for the black MIM Precision. But it's now number one, all done up in metalwork and finger rest as per 51 specs, nice tweed case, and it ROCKS. You just never know...
5. You Scored as Victor Wooten (at least he's a dyed-in-the-wool 4-banger, so we're alike there...) Victor Wooten 67% Pete Wentz 25% Jaco Pastorius 8% John Myung 8% Micheal "Flea" Balzary 0% A quarter Wentz? Do me a favour...I'm more Joe Osborn than any of them, and I'm patently nowhere near as good as Joe Osborn's left earlobe! Barring the pick...Joe always uses a pick...I never use a pick...ever.
6. Can't beat the good ol' SCPB!
7. "Oh, and not one of them mentioned the bass, at all. They were all aware it was new but not one comment. miserable gits." Oh dear...silly or not, it's nice to hear a bit of bass phwoar from your bandmates - miserable indeed! PS - If I ever manage to buy a current model P, Oly/tort/RW is THE colour scheme, even edging out black/maple...

Hi all!
I'm sure you'll be very pleased to discover how far bass gear has advanced both in quality and price since you last played. Unlike the skinny stringed stuff of course, which seems to remain firmly rooted in the 1950s
Oh dear...that must mean I'm some sort of closet guitarist! AAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHH!
9.
+1 Infinitely preferable to yet another Youtube twat masturbating via the medium of slap. Over the years I've been handed a couple of humbling lessons by eastern practitioners of disciplines about which I believed that, as a 'westerner', I possessed some form absolute measure as to what constitutes good or bad. I have western friends - some good musicians - who do not understand or appreciate slap style bass. Their response is one not of value judgement (i.e., good or bad), simply of non-comprehension, they don't know where to begin in deciding whether or not it's a skilled musical performance. This sort of thing is very much a culture-specific Oh, and another thing.... There's some implication above that the real iussue here is that the musician in question is playing an expensive instrument and that by not doing so in conventional manner or with sufficient 'skill', he is somehow mis-using it? I suspect that if we all had to play instruments that truly represented our skill I would still be aspiring to my first Encore whilst very few of us would own anything above a Squire It's raining outside and I'm a bit bored so excuse the above Chris
Yes, you've got a good point there, right enough...
10. A Fodera/Jackson Contrabass, no less! What a waste...
11. Didn't think I was in a minority with this - thank Dawkins!
12.
IF it dont say USA made Fender, it ISNT a P-Bass.
Most definitely NOT correct...When the CS 55 Time Machine was demo'd at Music Live 03, I had a go. Garbage, and there's no more USA Fender than Custom Shop. My Sting blew it into the weeds with utmost ease. So the MIJ/CIJ are definitely VERY GOOD! And I still play a MIJ 51RI more than anything else...That's not in any way saying the USA ones aren't all good. The new 08 Standards are bloody marvelous, I think. But 'only American will do' is simply a way to spend money for no reason...
13. Hi and welcome, Paulo, from someone who never, ever, gets beyond a Precision!

Howdy!

Howdy! Nothing wrong with a Squier!
15. Ignore them, nowt wrong with a bit of indie-pop...is there? Welcome! And, believe me, you're not old...
16. This subject is a very sore point with me...so much so, that perhaps it shows! Or maybe I just have a baaad face... My take on it is this... If something goes bang, you can use my amp, so long as the bang wasn't a direct result of something you did... If you call in advance wanting to share, the answer's no. Get someone to bring your own gear if you can't do it for yourself. A codicil to this: No wheels? Time to get lessons...Too young to drive? That's what parents are for... (and yes, I am one!) I'm only talking bass gear here, but I'd be the same with whatever. My reasoning is that so far, no-one, even other bass-players, that I've met in this situation, has been careful with what they've borrowed. Probably my bad luck, but it does prejudice one somewhat...The lucky part for me is that no-one has yet actually managed any serious damage, just showed that they don't give a rats because it's niot theirs... But, no matter WHAT the situation, no-one gets to gig my bass 'cept me. Ever. Different if at a Basschat bash or similar; there's a situation you can trust, I sincerely hope! Sorry if this sounds rantish, and I know it's been aired before. The open letter to the headlining band here was what stirred my juices. Man, what a bunch of morons...
17. Great skill...but he'd make nicer noises if it was him using the other type of 6-string...
