1.
Real guitarists dont use picks either you know.
Aha! Nice one!
2. Even acoustic instruments do not need 'good' woods to sound good. Bob Taylor, many years ago, stated that it was the skill of the luthier that gave an acoustic instrument a good sound. He then built a good flat-top out of pallets from the factory dumpster, to prove the point. Good wood is nice, but not neccessarily neccessary.
3.
Rosewood's right on Sunburst, Maple's wrong IMO
This.
4. And I think the idea of selling it to raise cash for the charity makes more sense than using it IN the charity, as you suggested.
5. Right on the changeover. My first P was the same time, but it had the later logo WITHOUT the serial under it - still on the neckplate. Wish i still had that bass, for many reasons...
6. I'm one of those who cannot use a pick, have never even tried, mainly because I think the sound you get from a pick is crap, basically. I do use one on one song, Ace iof Spades, because it really, really wouldn't be right without one, and in all honesty, I could not do it justice with my fingers. Having said all that, one of my favourite bassmen is Joe Osborn, who sounds great despite doing it ALL wrong. Pick, flats, Jazz Bass. All wrong. But his lines are sublime, and I love a great deal of the Carpenters music for that reason. But I have met him some of the way toward the middle - I only play flats now! As an example of why I hate, hate, HATE the technique, I refer you to 'Let's Go to San Francisco' by The Flowerpot Men. Aaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh! And it was played, horrifyingly, by none other that John Paul Jones! I rest my case, in my case. However, the point is that you play with what you play with, whatever works for you. No different from one's taste in basses. I hate fancy coffee-table basses, but if that's your definition of a good instrument, so be it. And so on...
7. Hmmmm...
8. An evening bumpage...
9. If you were after a similarly valued 5er, I'd be having your hands off for that... I used to have an '81 fretless P, bought new...wish I still did!
10.
Loving this thread. ...when your 3 year old son sings the bass lines of your set list rather than nursery rhymes.
Now, that's SCARY!
11.
My personal opinion would be to remove the final comment on solid boded guitars regarding 'additional tonal subtleties'. I have found no actual evidence of this but evidence to the contrary. But that's an old chestnut.
Old it maybe, but I agree with you. So much about the wood is overstressed. You need good wood, sure, but to my mind, the weight is probably the thing you should be worrying about... But then again, Freddie Tavares always said that the best solidbody guitar/bass would be a telgraph pole with strings. Doubt Leo agreed with that, but there it is... Certianly, in the early days, Fender cared more about how easy the wood was to work/finish than about any perceived tonal difference. i know that will upset many, but that's the way it actually was. There was, in the sense that we say it now, no such thing as 'tonewood'.
12. Howdy, hope you find your dream bass soon!
13. I've just failed 5s for the second time - maybe something in the water...
14. Howdy, from someone who desperately needs a lighter rig - and mine already weighs under 70lbs! Subsong: lots of choice, always a good thing!
15. Will also trade for Barefaced Midget or Compact!
16. Bump for edit...
17. Well, this was an experiment that didn't work out. It's a great bass, but although it doesn't hurt my hands quite like a Warwick 5, it still hurts. I'm guessing I'm getting a bit arthritic, so I don't want to exacerbate that. So it's back to 4-bangers for me. The bass was new in January, and has seen a half dozen gigs, msotly split with another bass, so it has gigging time, but not a lot. It is pretty much as new, and all that has been done to it out of the box is a set of flats and a setup. I will restring it with Rotobass rounds, or will leave the TI Jazz Flats on, buyer's choice. Action is pretty low and buzz-free (if you don't play as ham-fisted as me, that is - I can make 10mm action rattle!). Will sell with Warwick Rockbag, also as new (this came with it, but I used a hard case to keep it in). I'm looking for £305 delivered or a trade for a split-coil Precision, preferably with maple board, or a reissue Mustang, in white. Or, indeed, a Yamaha BB424 - happy with a direct swap for one of these! EDIT: forgot to add that if you want to fondle the goods, PM me, and we'll sort something. I'm in Tavistock, in West Devon. ALSO: If you can collect and pay cash, it's yours for £280!

Welcome! A MIM P is also my weapon of choice. That is, when my weapon of choice is not a MIJ 51RI!
21. Howdy!
22. Howdy! Nice to see your collection includes a 51RI!
