endpin rubber thingy

Hey,
Does anyone know a universal spike protector?

I bought a cheapie that doesn't fit, which is really annoying.

I thought about measuring it but not sure how to with any precision.

So, any ideas?

It's always falling of drives me nuts trying to locate a black ball in some rehearsal room carpark at midnight!

Unfortunately it's not that simple.

I had a second hand one fitted and there's no measurements on the invoice.

Yep, that's the one I had (note past tense) - fell off after a gig about 3 weeks after I bought, outside unfortunately so never found it... and they're about 18 quid.

I liked it but cost of ownership looks high at that rate.

Interested in cheap and cheerful alternatives - the doorstop idea is good I'll look into that.

Thanks guys, not 'in transit' much these days so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I use Super endpin ball on EUB and double
always take it off at the end of the gig though
two grub screws fall out but main screw holds it
lasted three years so far and floor grip is brilliant

Agreed they are nice and grippy, although I've had to lose one to realise you need to take it off every time you move the bass, which seems to defeat the purpose. I'd rather have something a tad more permanent to be honest.

You mean a second hand spike? Need to find the diameter then go looking for something to fit it.
There are so many different spike sizes; I use a walking stick end myself, just happens to fit my wooden (pretty thick) spike nicely. P'raps take your bass to market?

Stentor do them for Stentor and Zeller basses, and from memory they're cheaply suitable(!)

Another possiblity, but you have to get the end of the spike into the recess in the middle without being able to see what you're doing. Plus you can't move around at all while playing.
Popular with cellists, mind.

Good point, I forgot what a pain it is to get the spike into the middle.

I just rang Stentor, and they currently only do a cello spike protector (just why the spike needs protecting beats me!) which retails at a mad 71 pence! I'm sure I got my first one from them, so I made it fit somehow - poss drilled the rubber out to fit!
I'll keep looking, but in the meantime the walking stick/mic stand/etc rubbers will have to suffice.

I haven't been able to find replacements (for the rubber end ball): if you can point me to where you can buy them, I'll have 12. They really are excellent, while they last. I have had no issue with it falling off.

However: if you manage to hold onto the ball end without it falling off, the effing thing wears through. Took me just under a year & I'm no pro.

(You'll have to trust me that I didn't abuse it in any way or force the pencil through the gap)

The advantage is you can take your 'attachment' (the metal bit) off, walk with it to your local key cutting store [url="http://www.timpson.co.uk/shop/c/302/walking-sticks-amp-umbrellas/s/161/accessories/g/373/ferrules"]Timpsons[/url] and get a walking stick "ferrule" to fit.



I wrapped some gaffa around the end to ensure a super-tight fit. So far, so good.
