Unsurpassed only by James J... Not only is the voice the best ive ever heard, but the bass playing makes me cry everytime i hear it! Willie bounces around like a musical master on the bass..for me in the pocket bass playing rarely gets better than this..

Rod Stewart and the SF.

Agree with you on Rod the Mod, Maggie May, but didn`t Ronnie Wood play bass on Rod`s early solo stuff when he was still in the Faces?

But agree with you, Ronnie Lane had great feel. Try and find a live version of the faces song "3 button hand me down". It was on a TOPTP2 special.

'Little Ghetto Boy' is Transcribed in full in this months copy of
Bass Player.

Donny Hathaway is essential listening. Superbly grooving all the
way through, finally topped off by Willie Weeks' stunning solo on
'Voices Inside (Everything is Everything).

You're right, Ronnie Wood was playing bass with RS right back from the Jeff Beck group days and then the faces.

I originally started playing bass not because of any inspiration from a player, but because I wanted to get more work, mercenary but true. After that Pino was the man for me, this was the early 80s. However, fate conspired not to provide me with any extra work whatsoever and the next gig I was offered was back on the the dreaded treble guitar, doh! So I had to sell my bass gear and go back. Then many years later despite getting work on guitar, the allure of the bass side just came back probably mostly through Roscoe Beck's playing with Robben Ford and Eric Johnson. So I just decided to go with my heart and hit the low down route. This time around I've been rewarded with playing in a number of working bands. I still love what Roscoe does and I rediscovered Pino (very different these days). Add to that Chuck Rainey with Steely Dan, Rocco Prestia, the sublime Tony Levin, the list goes on, but these 5 guys are my real inspiration.

Ronnie Lane was a BIG influence on me as a bass player - and particularly Maggie May, a song I've always loved with a perfectly integrated bass line in the song. So natural, so 'couldn't be anything else' kind of line!

Used to do Three Button hand me down with The Roosters but their version had a bass solo to start and at several places during the song. And it was a hundred mile an hour kind of band! I loved the song but I always looked forward to getting that one out of the way!
