Short Scale Bass's

Now then folks, I'm new here so hello and all that palaver!

I' am on a mission to find a cheap short scale to use as a second bass.
I'm currently using a 1977 Fender Musicmaster which I love.. I've had many many bass.. p-bass, jazz, thunderbirds, tokai's, some hammer bass's etc etc etc.
But I play all standard tuning so the shortscale is fine for me and much lighter and the tone suits our band.
So if anybody can help, I'm not too fussed about the wood used aslong as the action is good and its not going to fall in half, I'd quite like a shortscale p-bass, but I've got more chance making a rocking horse s**t sandwich.

Cheers.

Dave.

I think you need to define 'cheap' first. Are we talking Squier Bronco or MIJ Mustang?

Edit: I have a '77 Mustang, black with a maple neck. It sounds awesome. It was for sale a while back, but i'm keeping hold of it.

Cheap as in £150-£250 but for the right one.. up to £400 or so.
SX do a number of short scale basses too, e.g. this.
Anybody ever used one? Is it playable and upgradable (do fender pickups slot in without routing?).
Can you get hold of them in the UK anywhere?
Fender Japan do a 32" scale Precision bass (and a Jazz too). They are hard to find but they do exist.
I think the short p-bass is called a bullet bass.. I've looked everywhere for one and if/when I do find one, I probably wont have the cash for it. :)
No contest - get a Japanese Mustang reissue - mine is my no 1 gigging bass.
Secondhand ones crop up for around £300 on ebay for the standard colours of white or red, a bit more for the non-export colours which don't come up very often.
I've been looking at the mustangs but I was wanting something different.. they are very similar to the musicmasters in looks.

Different to the Bullet bass - a Precision but 32" - there's one sold here in US with pics. Some pics in this thread at TB too. Looks like they are hard to find though.

Jazz bass version here.
I do like that Stu Hamm Urge, I bet those are difficult to find too. :)
Yes - but not impossible. A couple of years ago I put a search on E-bay, with the e-mails, and within 9 months or so I first had a MIM Urge Mk 1 (2 Jazz pickups only), and then a MIA Urge Mk1 (2 Jazz + a P pickup). Both are great instruments. A couple of the MIAs have been on E-bay recently, but at silly prices. My MIM cost about £350 (which I think was over the odds really - but I was desperate to get one) and the MIA one was £600 (which I think was a fair price).

To my ear the MIA on the P Pickup does not sound quite like a actual P bass (thgough more so in passive mode).
Also it's quite a lively instrument and I've ended up putting ground wounds on, which tames it down a bit.

I would like to know too.

I have seen pictures of these, and they do look rather nice.

When I've sorted out the Picobass, that I've asked Prosebass on this forum to build, I may look into one of these....Or see if he could do a short scale P.....smaller body.....maybe evan a headless version...... :brow:

I'll go and hide now, untill people have forgot why they want to slap me. :)

I've just bought a Squier Bronco (not for the first time :) ) and I'm pondering buying a second one to defret - I'm encouraged to have yet another fretless (to eventually sell on) by this fretless demo vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMVAwUYCn3A

I've got plans to build myself a short-scale bass, but it/they'll pass the time until I get round to it

Hi.
I have a black Urge bass, VERY GOOD nick,
rosewood board.
Can't remember the year - Mexico - plays and
sounds great. Not used it for ages - bought it
and other shorter scale basses when I injured
my hand.
I also no longer use a classic Aria TSB400.
Both of these are medium scale - 32"
I also have an Aria CSB450 but it has such a great
sound/feel to it, I shall keep that one.
The CSB300 is a good "smaller" bass but mine went
to another home. :)
Let me know if you are interested and I will dig them out
and take some pics.

Cheers.
Flat Eric.
