Are us Brits a 'fickle' bunch?

I've just had a very interesting ( read quiet day at work  ) read through all 11 pages of this talkbass thread on a British innovatory pre-amp that gets barely a mention in the UK

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=429951

The man behind this idea also chooses to bravely launch a new line of personally hand built high quality UK basses at a price of about half that of a mass produced MM Stingray and yet barely a comment is made while a pierced tongue (no offence to the piercee) gets several pages.

It sometimes seems to me a bit odd :)

It's not odd really though, mate. A bass pre-amp has limited interest even on a bass forum, but a kid determined to get his tongue pierced, and all the social connotations and opportunities for humour that provides, is relevent to the masses.

As for the pre-amp, there are a few threads on BC: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry265536 is an example.

I think the reason why it gets less mentioned is because a fair few people know about it on BC, they consider it as part of the bass for custom builds or as an upgrade fairly frequently, or at least they do on the threads I've been reading and it's no longer a spanking new product. It's accepted.

Edit:

As for the cut down basses, I do remember a thread about it being planned, I wasn't aware they'd got off the ground yet.

And the launch of the 1st line of price accessable British built basses in many years?

I hear what you say but still find it odd. The mad thing is I think that if Alan doubled his prices (he'd be justified imo) he'd probably double the interest.

The pre does have a limited interest I agree but it seems to be greater in the US where the exchange rate made it a very expensive option. It's also not 'just' a pre-amp but a very different approach to manipulating your frequencies.

Oh well, what is, is.

Threads have been on BC and pretty much sunk down the pages like a stone in a pond :)

If he marketed, or could afford to market, properly, you would have heard more. But I doubt he has the manufacturing capacity to deal with loads of bass orders so he'll probably need to keep it fairly low key until he can show he has a sustainable business. All depends how big he wants to be, if he wants to do it on his own or take on backers and be a corporate "slave", etc.

+1
Also there are many more people on TB so there will be more who want to talk about everything.
Not sure they have an off topic section either.....

I think in part it's due to the nature of the affiliates forums. Alex's forum kind of dominates the listings of recent threads on the home page at the moment, and so all the other affiliate forms spend less time highlighted on the front page.

I've got to say I was well aware of the pre-amps (even though I don't really have too much interest in active electronics), but the Graft basses are a new one on me. Maybe I'll have to spend more time browsing the sub forums.

Edit: I've just realised that isn't right - Barefaced Bass has it's own sub forum, so it's not dominating the Basschat Affiliates forum. Still, AGC are up against a dozen other sub forums in that section.

TBH, I've been aware of both for a while. Was looking at ACG pres ages ago, never took the plunge in the end.

The whole approach and ethic of ACG is different to a lot of builders but please believe me, the quality of the products is world class.
Once ACG have a big name player using their basses then things will change, in the meantime, they'll have to make do with Stanley Clarke using the preamps, oh well.

If you have an active bass, it will have a pre amp. On board battery powered tone shaping. same as having a Sansamp, mate, except that's on the floor.

I didn't.

Just looked at that black bass he's built. I think the chrome hardware puts me off a bit, but I see black hardware is available. It also looks a bit too basic but that might just be the black finish, I've never bought a black bass and maybe that's why.

I'll be interested to see how his other body shapes look with the pared-down features.

Have to admit, I didn't like it either. It's a bit ugly and pedestrian looking. But I don't like any of his shapes TBH.

The man needs to sort his marketing and website out.
There's loads he could be doing ..
