Vintage Bridge Saddle help....

Hi...

I have an old vintage bass that has a replacement bridge. The E string saddle spacing bolt has stripped and pulled out. I replaced it with a slightly larger diameter bolt that has held for now. 

Does anyone have a complete bridge or just a saddle that matches this unknown make of bridge.

I believe that is a Schaller 2000 bridge……..now no longer in production, unfortunately.

Lars from Schaller got back to me this morning. Unfortunately they haven't got any left. 

Looks like I will have to check out eBay and Reverb for parts.

I've used Accu.co.uk several times to source replacement screws of various sizes. Excellent service and you can buy small quantities. Schaller are bloody great at answering queries like this.  Glad to see that's still the case, even if they couldn't help you.  They should be able to tell you the length/thread/head type that you need though, then any good hardware/fastener supplier ought to be able to help you out when presented with this info.

Unfortunately it's not the bolt that has lost the thread it's the saddle. 

I will have to find a second hand bridge to use it for parts.

Anyone able to make threads will fix this to you under an hour. Find a local that has the tools.

If it's the saddle that has stripped threads, it will require the hole plugging, re-drilling and a new thread making. Is that doable?

Is the current bolt the same thread as the original? If so, you might be able to get away with just chasing the threads with a tap.

 

*imagines a random basschatter running down the street wielding some plumbing hardware*

 

If not, then you should be able to fill the hole with brass solder (if it's steel; possibly a blob of weld if it's aluminium) and then drill/tap it for the original thread size. Any engineering/metalwork shop should be able to do it for a small fee; I'd suggest finding a bicycle framebuilder or a custom motorbike shop as they are usually full of decent folk who like an oddball challenge.
