Favourite headstock design? Just for fun...

Kubicki factor. Not strictly a headstock but.....phwoar!

 

Of my current basses, the ACG angled headstock is my favourite

Did you post it when looking at an earlier page than the last one? Sometimes nothing appears to happen so you click again, and again...

Actually YES I remember having to click on the reply button more than once because nothing was happening. Thanks for helping me to remember. I'll know not to do that again going forward 😊

Indeed. If I was building that bass though, I'd drill straight through, add bigger bolts and chuck some nuts and washers on the back too, just in case

I had one of those bar type retainers pull out of the face of the headstock before - I won't use them again.

Have you? Its a shame because I agree with Doctor J that they are a more elegant solution to the break angle issue

These are my weapon of choice these days.  Yes, it does mean that one string is not quick release, but the way it's made means it's compact.  There's no need for anything on the lowest string - it's close enough to the nut that if you put enough winds on the tuner post it will make a fine break angle without assistance.

Also, these units have the added benefit that if the original 2 string round tree is in a place where it's not in line with one of the tuners, then you can re-use the existing hole for one of the screws in the new retainer, so no holes to fill, and you can screw it down, make sure it's straight then use the retainer itself as its own guide/template for the second pilot hole.

And another thing - if your truss rod adjusts at the headstock, wouldn't the bar frustrate that, if placed to catch all strings?

The bar is used on almost every Floyd Rose equipped guitar, many of which have headstock adjusted truss-rods. It's not an issue, in my experience, when it comes to truss-rod adjustment.

 

I agree with you on the 4-string one, though, I've done the same on every 4 I have, either that one or the Hipshot one.

But the bar on a 5 string is not an unusual feature across other brands.
