NBD 1980 Shergold

Well…after a bit of a wait, and a bit of Wayne Carini style “it’s all about the chase” behaviour…

A mate had bought a 70’s one on a whim and I was absolutely smitten with it…but he wouldn’t sell.

Off I set on my little search…found via the Shergold owners group on Facebook.

Original 1980 case too.

its very clean overall with some edge marks.

Not bad for 44 years old.

looks lovely

I almost bought a double neck, it was white.

What does it sound like?

I’ve got to build a go cart, then I’m going to record some stuff.

Sort of a P, but not - much like a BB300 which I’ve owned a few of.

I’ve got one of the original Marathon 6 Basses like Hooky’s in cherry red. I’ve owned many over the years including double necks and 8 strings I expect yours won’t have the lacquer cracking that most suffer from. Not tried one with the ‘laminate’ finish, it’s definitely a later model. Looks great!

sounds similar to a precision, which I like

Yep, definitely P bass territory. I reckon that will garner a lot of interest* when used at a gig.

Yeah - under the truss Rod cover is a stamp finishing in 80, meaning it’s one of the later ones - no flaky finish, and a “long horn” - pretty cool.

There were some of these bodies still knocking about until a few years ago apparently.

The case is hilariously aged - covered in stickers from 1992/1991 gigs for “Konkrete Hamster”

Nut width - 43mm - but very shallow.

Weight. The scales I put out on the side for a new battery, which I’ve been out to buy…

Have now been ”tidied away” - and she’s off out to watch city/villa with the lad.

Now, by my patented hold in the hand and guess within 10% method…8.5lbs.

That was quick. Sounds all very manageable and right in my ball park, which is not good.

The last 3 of these I’ve had in my hands have been sub 9lbs.

which, when my Ripper is pushing 11 is like lifting a Lego brick after moving Atlas stones

I sort of want to find a tatty but functional one, have it sprayed metallic brown and have the old Marathon chocolate bar logo on the mini pickguard…

I’ve started with an idiotic idea and it won’t go away…
