Rayman Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 So this has been my latest projectā¦. details are in the ābuild diariesā thread. Ā Ā I canāt tell you how much I love this thing. Iāve spent too much on it, but it was fun, and a decent but modest Thunderbird has been transformed into an absolute beast. Thunderous, piano like toneā¦.. itās absolutely my current favourite, I canāt put it down. Again, details on the build diary thread. Ā So is it worth spending the time and money on it? Absolutely yes, because I love it and plan to keep it. If IĀ doĀ sell it, Iāll loose money, so if it was something I was going to flip, I wouldnāt have spent so much. Ā Itās a really awesome Thunderbird. My mate already has a Gibson and an Epi Proā¦.. he wants this one too. Ā Very happy with it. Ā Ā 12 Quote
Ralf1e Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 Beautiful bass. I like the look and idea of a Thunderbird but for me it would have to be the wood showing version. 1 Quote
ezbass Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 Dive, dive, dive? Are you referring to the tendency of Tābirds to be unbalanced or have you chosen the wrong Gerry Anderson series? Ā All that silliness aside - nice! 1 1 Quote

Yep, it dives like Ronaldo if you let goā¦.. keeps you on your toes! Quote

Still looks cooler than a cucumber in Raybans though. Always fancied a white one like Martin Turnerās. Bring out a medium or short scale ābird and Iām all over it. 1 Quote
Rayman Posted May 14, 2023 Author Posted May 14, 2023 (edited) Ahhhh Martin Turnerā¦ā¦ I saw Wishbone Ash at Lancaster Uni in the 80s IĀ think.Ā Martin had just left, replaced by Trevor Boulder from the Spiders From Mars.Ā Ā but yeahā¦.. a white bird with chrome pupsā¦..Ā niceĀ Ā Ā Edited May 14, 2023 by Rayman 1 Quote
binky_bass Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 I glad you bought this! I was sooooo close to grabbing it myself then decided against it last minute. Clearly gone to the better home! Great work on taking a decent bass and giving it the shot of steroids it needed to be a superb beast! Looks awesome. šĀ 1 Quote
Rayman Posted May 14, 2023 Author Posted May 14, 2023 (edited) Thanks so much, I appreciate that. Ā Ā Edited May 14, 2023 by Rayman Quote
fleabag Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 Oh my - listen to Turner under headphones. What an awesome tone. Ā This live gig is with Ted Turner back in the band ( in fact it's the original mob ) after about a 14 or 15 year departure. He came back on the Nuveau Calls album which is a beauty. Ā Yes of course i got the CDĀ - had it for 30 years. Top music Ā Ā 2 Quote

I think he had the best voice of all of them and was the ideal candidate for a front man. Things might have been very different. 1 Quote
Rayman Posted May 14, 2023 Author Posted May 14, 2023 ā81 it was when I saw themā¦.Number the Brave tourā¦.. now I feel oldĀ Quote
ezbass Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 I never saw them with the original line up, or with Laurie. However, I have seen the 2 versions of WA probably more than any other band. Unfortunately, Iāve always been underwhelmed. Quote
ezbass Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 On the upside, I saw Ashbone-U-Wish many times and they were always great. Full disclosure, the members of AUW were/are good mates of mine, but that didnāt influence my opinion. The bass player, an occasional BCer, actually Ā depped for Bob Skeat on one of the WA tours; he is a man of many Tābirds. 1 Quote
Rayman Posted May 14, 2023 Author Posted May 14, 2023 Itās funny (or sad whichever way you look at it), when bands fragment, and original band members end up in a kind of tribute band playing their original stuff. Ā I havenāt seen WA since ā81. There are now two versions? Martin Turnersā¦. and Andy Powells? I assume they are the only original two in both bandsā¦.Ā Ā I watched MTs version on YouTube, playing liveā¦.. not many people in the audience? Kind of sad.Ā 1 Quote

Ā Quite agree, though Martin and Andy were very close to Ted in the vocal dept.Ā I loved Ted's guitar work too 1 Quote

Another man with awesome tone.Ā Looks like aĀ Ray. Ā The recording of all of them is crystal clear - fabulous stuff.Ā Powell is still a talent to be reckoned with Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Edited May 14, 2023 by fleabag 1 Quote
fleabag Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 Plutonium ingots - nice. Ā You could well grow some extra fingers, which would be handy. (sic) 2 Quote

bassbiscuits Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 Iāve always adored the look of a T-Bird but I canāt get on with them despite having repeatedly tried.Ā Ā Itās a combination of the awkward balance and the playing position which puts the nut and headstock somewhere in the next county.Ā Ā I wish I could handle one but I canāt. That wonāt stop me lusting after them tho.Ā 2 Quote

Doesn't stop me wanting either of them. 1 Quote
Rayman Posted May 25, 2023 Author Posted May 25, 2023 Itās certainly a stretch to the nut, unless you strap it quite lowā¦. Iām usually just below waist height, which brings the neck up a bitā¦.. Ā but thereās always the dive, which Iāve never been able to solveā¦. Just part of the experience I guess. Ā Tonally, I love the sound so much. Quote
