my faves....
The two Origin effects ones, though is it cheating as they have amp sim on?
The two Tech 21 rack models, VT bass and Geddy sig
The Digbeth thing also stood out, I've not heard of that one before

Also nice most the time but not as nice as the above

The Badwater, and the Bass butler

Darkglass Microtubes B7K

Orange Bass Butler

GK Plex

Tech21 Geddy

All got my vote

Which is rather annoying as I have the Sansamp and Ampeg SCRDI. I liked the Sansamp in that clip, wouldn’t rave about it, but not keen on the SCRDI at all (tho love it when I use it at home).

The most consistently good ones to my ears were the Bassrig SV, Arkham and Geddy, whereas I found the Trickfish, AE Ultra and Badwater unspectacular but solid.

SCR-DI, Transit and Microtubes X were terrible.

Great video. I watched this intently, tonight, as need to buy a Pre-amp/DI.

For me, there were two clear winners ;

The MXR and the Origin Effects Vintage (Blue one). They sounded thicker, fuller and smoother, and more powerful than the others, with real 'body' and presence.

Conversely I disliked the Darkglass ones and thought the Trace Elliot and Ampeg were the poorest sounding across the board. Although TBF, it sounded like the settings for the TE were all over the shop.

On the back of this, I've ordered the MXR!

A really really good comparison, and there's something for everyone in there too.

It gives a real world setting for everything too, as some preamps just sound pants compared to others, depending on the player and the bass, so much more honest than most test videos where everything is tweaked to sound as good as possible, sometimes, I suspect with external gear.

My favourites were mainly the Sansamp ones, the VT Bass mainly, but I will always have a soft spot for the BDDI, which is lucky as I have one :)

I wish they had included the Behringer tribute to the BDDI in as well.

Would have been interesting to hear that.

I think for all intents and purposes, in a mix like that you wouldn't hear much of a difference.
I believe there is a little more finesse in the BDDI tone in isolation, and the build quality will obviously be night and day

Ultimately, it's meant to be a pretty accurate clone, mainly just the quality of build and components that make the difference, oh and the BDDI V2 has a bit more going on control wise too, the Behringer is a clone of the V1.

I've got the Behringer and I did have a BDDI V1 about a decade ago, so I can't really remember it accurately.

The clone sounds great even if it is not accurate.

And as the V2 are now nearly £300 it will have to do!

Yeah, the SansAmp pricing has gone WAY up.

I bought my original V1 back in the 90s for not much more than £100 new.
That's since gone, and I got a good as new V2 for £150 about 2 years ago.
I guess they're just keeping up with the prices of all their competition, as these preamp pedals are getting very pricey now.

^^^

£100 in 1990 is now worth £225 due to inflation though (and the v2 can be got for £253 from GAK, with £150 still roughly the going rate for a good 2nd hand one), so not as much of a cost increase as it might seem.
