Well i recently decided to drop guitar and take up bass (at least for a while) i orderd a ibanez sr305 ipt 5 string bass guitar from my local music store for £280ish. Now im wondering what amp i should get as the guy at the shop wasnt very helpfull at all. I mostly play thrash metal(on guitar so i guess thats what i will be playing on bass) but am recently getting more in to the death metal however i dont want the bass to sound like a chainsaw. I have a budget of £220 max and would like to get at least a 100watt amp as my mate plays guitar in our band and has a 150watt amp. lemmywinks Posted March 23, 2009 Share Posted March 23, 2009 You might need to rethink the power rating if your guitarist is noisy (sounds like he is if he's got a 150w amp!). 100w bass amps quickly get drowned out. There's usually some decent Ashdown/Hartke/Peavey gear in the for sale forum. It's a good idea to borrow an amp for a rehearsal to see if it can cut the mustard If you can stretch to a little more money then a whole load of better gear becomes available. Having owned a similar setup in the past, I can vouch that it will give you plenty of volume. It's heavy, but loud. That amp head alone weighs about as much as 7 newborn babies. stevie Posted March 23, 2009 Share Posted March 23, 2009 I'd strongly advise you to go for a head and a cab rather than a combo. It will give you much greater flexibility. Also, it's not a bad idea to get second hand stuff to start with, as this will allow you to chop and change a bit while you get your bearings. This forum is certainly a great place to buy. Keep your eyes peeled though, shouldn't take long for something appropriate to crop up in your area (or with someone who can post/courier). I used my old valve Fender Bassman 100 at rehearsal a few days ago, and apparently, I was too loud....... I am up against a Marshall 60W and an Orange 120. But look out for Trace Elliott Commandos, Peavey TNTs, bigger Laney combos and even the Hartke stuff. Try and up your budget to as much as physically possible, deals are out there but they get more frequent and more enticing the more money you have. I'm going to make a very sweeping and broad generalization here: look for a 15" speaker (2x10" is acceptable, 4x10" is perfect) and at least 100W. My opinion in this price range is if you try not to be too choosy about size, weight, features or badge, you can even buy a decent sounding amp. Check the 'for sale' forum on here! And whilst your amp is on the quieter side take the opportunity to teach your guitarist about the value of dynamic control and that the volume knob turns anti-clockwise too...
