Bay Splayer Posted January 23, 2009 Share Posted January 23, 2009 apparently i have a detached thumb extensor tendon, or to give it its proper name Extensor Pollicis Longus dont know when my op will be yet, but have been told i wont be able to work for six weeks to allow healing and will need physiotherapy to aid recovery have already had to adapt my slap technique since injury, so guess i am gonna have to adapt again to play how i used to has anyone else here had a similar injury/operation? I slipped in the works car park the other week on some ice and pulled a finger back on my left hand its still sore.i'm starting to get paranoid about my fingers. When I was 17 I wrecked the right side of my torso in a rugby incident: shunted collar bone, torn pectoral muscle and generally mangled my back, shoulder and arm. I can't really play with much speed for extended periods of time using my fingers - so some forms of metal are out (unless I learn to use a pick). Jaco had a bad (american) football injury when he was about 17, which damaged his shoulder too - but he adapted and managed ok, so I'm sure you'll be fine. Oh yeah, the little finger on my fretting hand was broken once and didn't heal properly - so I don't have much speed or strength in that one. You just kind of adapt though. I mean if Def Leppard's drummer could keep going after he lost an arm, we should be fine! Oh, another thing - I saw a guy play the bass without a hand. He just had a stump where his arm ended. WalMan Posted January 24, 2009 Share Posted January 24, 2009 I had the index finger of my right hand replaced a couple of years back due to its disintegrating with arthritis. I was in a half cast for about six weeks but it was moving and a damn sight less painless almost immediately after I came round from the op. I have a feeling the same hands pinkie will need doing soon and possibly the wrist as well - and while he's about it the specialist might be able to get the two intermediate fingers straightened up too. So far as I am concerned the replacement (and shoulder replacement a couple of years previously) were godsends that have allowed me to get back to pain free playing. I use a pick, did for a lot of years, and have had to go back to one now, BUT that is because the middle two fingers are twisted with the arthritis and get in each others way, as well as the fact that I prefer the sound and attack of a pick for the classic rock covers we do. Currently gigging with my band playing synth basslines, so I know how it is to be incapacitated. Have just started back driving again though, which is bloody marvellous! metalmisty Posted January 25, 2009 Share Posted January 25, 2009 Hi Ya, Well all I can say is you'll find a way, what ever they do to you!!! I'm completely metal in both wrists now due to R.A . I have four screws holding my fingers on and a golf ball for a wrist, no bone from the elbow down. They have just re-done my right wrist and the guitarist took out nineteen stitches yesterday as I couldn't be bothered to go back and get them out. I week after I was out I was gigging back with the band, deps on bass, Thanks boys !!!, I'm back on vocals, morphined out my nut, but what the heck you gotta get back in the saddle. you can't watch the world go by and not be part of it. I can't yet hold a pick but i'm working on it. It pure rock and roll, if music is in your blood your get back out as soon as you can. Think positive and all will go well for you. I worked in specialst hand-clinic in Cape Town a few years ago, so i'm fully aware of the 'rehab' you'll have to go through. But there's no reason why you won't get back to 100%!
