Fender MIK..... WTF?

Have I missed something somewhere? I'm pretty good at remembering stuff from the comics but I'll be jiggered if I remember anywhere seeing that they are making them in KOREA.......

I went into my local music shop (the big PINK shop in Lincoln, great place BTW!) to buy my guitarist a birthday present.... and I had to look at the basses didnt I......

Well I was drawn to a new 5 string Jazz, a nice tobbaco burst and I picked it up for a twanglet. It had a gold F logo which I hadnt seen before so thought it was unusual so I flipped it over and it had a proper F serial number but "made in Korea" underneath....

Looks like we'll have to add another catagory to the debate... MIA, MIJ MIM and now MIK.... :)

In fairness it was pretty well put togheter and felt somewhere between a MIM and MIA.... Maybe this is because they are new and QC is spot on..... Oh and it wasnt cheap either.... £760....

So wadda we think, good bad indifferent?

Squier have been making in Korea for a while I think. In fact I have a vague memory that some early Squiers had a Fender logo on the headstock with a smaller Squier one as well (but maybe I'm just imagining that!).

Korean made Laklands are great, I'd rate them ahead of some US made Fenders in terms of consistency. £760 sounds like a lot of money for a non USA Fender unless it's up to Lakland spec in terms of parts and build quality?

The "Jazz 24" ( http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0264500552 ) basses are made in Korea. Apparently they're great, although having never played one, I can’t comment from personal experience.
i had a light ash tele korean made seymour duncan pickups sounded good but weighed more than some of my basses quite well made though
I was going to say the lite ash strats and teles I'd seen were all Korean made with sort of abalone dots in the fingerboard.

Beat me to it. And i tried one of those and a squier VMJ next to each other once. The squier was better.

The 24 fret "deluxe" jazz's are made by Cort in Korea. Only had a brief play on one, was ok (for a fender) , certainly better than any of the Mexicans I've played. Not surprising as I'm a big Admirer of Cort stuff. It has duncan pickups and pre, but is priced a little high for it's spec (if you compare it with other MIK basses) Mind you that fender logo does cost... :)
Ah Music Makers, bought my first bass from there. Nice shop, not a huge range of basses though.
You know the pink shop??? Wow, how cool!

I agree they dont have lotsa basses, but they do have some, and I guess most of the important ones in the up £500 bracket..... (except Rockbass)
And the lovely thing for me is that they dont try to tell what you want, in fact they genuinely seem to enjoy talking to someone who has more knowledge in areas that they dont. ..... Thats why I dont mind going in and spending in there....

Oh the other great thing? Often you'll go in and they be jammin'

Love it.

The very first ones did, yeah. At that point they were made in Japan and hence were pretty nice guitars...

£760 is steep. You can get the 4 string version brand spanking for £500 ( http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=6408 ), and the 5 string for £100 more ( http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=5887 ). I was thinking about getting a 4 string version but I'd want to be able to try it somewhere before I bought one new and I can't find anywhere local to me that has one for me to try out.

Wooley mi owd mate....

I agree we DO have some of the best makers in the world on these shores of ours.... but should we EVER be making Fenders? Ooooeeeeh I think not......

1st off we wouldnt be able to lever Swampy and his tree hugging mates off the decent tres long enough to get some decent wood together to make a production run......

Oh the list is endless......

The pink shop.... Best around here bar none!
