Grahambythesea Posted June 19, 2016 Share Posted June 19, 2016 If we're going to quote precedence, then Dave Pegg definitely plays an Ibanez 5 string, Rick Kemp, who virtually invented folk rock bass playing in Steeleye Span, used a 70's F. Telecaster bass with the dreadful Mudbucker type pickup, but then added 2 Precision pickups before abandoning this in favour of an Overwater, but when last I saw him I think it too was playing an Ibanez. Then there was the iconic Silly Wizard and a F. Precision. Ashley Hutchings who created Fairport and Steeleye and the Albion Band plays a Warwick, Demon Barber Road show the bassist plays a Jazz type which I don't think is Fender. Then there was a band called the Byrds, also credited with inventing FolkRock, Chris Hillman mainly played a Guild Starfire, but he was really a mandolin player so what he know!!!!!!!! You've encouraged me to try it with the Stingray next time - I'll do this and report back. I also splashed out on an MXR M81 pre amp today, and I think I'll be in tone heaven now :-) Perhaps I should use my Spector 5, that might be funny. TrevorR Posted June 21, 2016 Share Posted June 21, 2016 Well, let's see... I know the bass player in Mabon. He's just gone from Spectors and MMs to a Wal. Peggy has an Ibanez Soundgear. Iona in the time I've followed them have had a Chapman Stick, Wals, MMs, Warriors, Steinbergers. Kemp has a Ric. I played folk back in the day with an Aria SB700, a Wal and an EMG equipped Squier... This suggests to me that the correct answer is "Whatever you fancy...!" So, I'd stick with the MM then unless you fancy something different... Or not... I bought one but couldn't get on with it - I'm used to plastic strings - but lent it to a friend who loves it and wants to buy it. It's all a matter of personal taste.........
