1999 MIA that I'm getting in a trade with Martthebass. White pickguard possibly going to tort.

Thanks very much for the link. They will copy a tracing it seems but I'm wondering how likely is it that an off the shelf replacement will fit correctly without making new screwholes in the body.

Great thanks for that.

Did the Stingray pickguard screwholes fit exactly?

Just one thing of note Dave - don't forget the MIA Jazz (and P bass) have the 'notch' out of the pg for the truss rod (like a Lakky).

OK, thanks for that Mart. I may not do the change at all but if I do I want to make sure I'm not making any extra holes and I know people who have had that problem.

It looks like WD Music have the right shape/screwholes/cutouts etc but for the vintage look do I want the brown tort or the red tort?

I'm not asking for your aesthetic preference - although you can tell me that if you want to; I go for the brown tort.

I want to know which colour is closer to what would have been on an early 60s sunburst Jazz?

Help me please.
I'd get a genuine Fender one from bass parts resource

Out of stock of the Torty one at the moment, but the holes & outline will line up much better than any aftermarket one.
Thanks for the link.

That one looks like the brown tort.

But doesn't seem to have the cut out for the truss rod in which case it won't fit.
Thanks, is that why you are called budget bassist :)
Indeed it is  To be honest though, just filing a tiny bit off a pickguard isn't really a big deal, it's to be expected really if you don't buy a genuine fender replacement and it's not particularly noticable if at all if you do it right, which isn't that hard really.

Thanks again, budget. Call me a perfectionist but I'm hoping not to file anything however easy it is. I'd happily buy a genuine Fender replacement (or whatever else) if I had at least a good chance of it fitting properly. At the moment I'm considering getting to like the white after all. :)
Brown Tort Dave - and don't forget the pics when it's fitted!
Thanks, I think it is the brown one - but I just want someone to say (preferably truthfully) that the brown tort is the more vintage of the two. And pics will be forthcoming if I ever actually do this.
With my replacement the pick up gap had to be filed out as it wouldn't fit over the top.

Not sure if that is a problem but just a heads up.
Wayne, is that on a MIM Jazz? I've read at Talkbass that the MIM has bridge sized pickups in both positions and so the neck pickup is bigger than on the MIA Jazz. Perhaps that would explain why you had to file it.

It is a MIM but I have SD Quarter Pounders I guess that could be why, as I say I think it's something you should make sure of a lot of people forget about the pick up slot and concentrate on the screw holes.

I think I'm just going to have to order what looks like the one most likely to fit and then see if it does.
