Bass Collection Gallery

Hey guys,

I was driving home from work yesterday and randomly thought about a bass I'd seen one of the members post a picture of on the forums.

I couldnt remember who posted the picture or what thread it was in and I knew I had little hope of finding it again...and it got me thinking...

Is it possible to set up a bass collection gallery on the forums? Members can post pictures of their basses and people can search the pictures by manufacturer, colour, forum member name etc etc etc. This could even be linked to the introductions section; "Introduce yourself, upload a pic of your bass"...?

Some of you may think this is a bad idea, but I've seen some incredible basses on this forum and (in the interests of gear porn), I'm sure many people would like to see them all together in one place .

If this idea has been done before, or its already in place somewhere on the forums, I'm really sorry to waste your time :) If its a new idea and you've got any thoughts on it, or how easy/hard it would be to set up then leave a comment .

Hope you're all ok, catchya later

Matt

Nice one. What you reckon?

A sub forum with threads as follows would be good

Manufacturer 1
Model A
Model B
Model C
Manufacturer 2
Model A
Model B
Model C
Manufacturer 3
Model A
Model B
Model C
Manufacturer 4
Model A
Model B
Model C

It would have to be kept policed though. Wouldn't want ten bazillion threads under musicman with stingray pictures. There should be one Stingray thread with multiple pics etc. A bit like the porn section I suppose, but a bit more controlled and organised - I know psychoandy would attempt to start many, many threads in this area otherwise :)

LoL, yeah I see what you mean :)!

Yeah I was thinking of a format like that, EBS_freak, say 1 or 2 examples of every model and colour combination for each manufacturer.

E.g:

Fender
Jazz
Original '74 Jazz
3 Colour Sunburst (tort pickguard, maple fingerboard)
3 Colour Sunburst (black pickguard, rosewood fingerboard [or whatever])

I reckon it would serve as a good reference point for people with bad GAS as they could see which combo of materials, finishes etc they would prefer to help make up their minds...

I know people would love to show others what they have and I dont think people would see it as a chore to put up a bit of info about their baby(ies)

Any better suggestions would be awesome

Would love this to happen, I reckon it would help a lot of people out; not only to help buying choices, but just for people to admire and gaze in awe at other people's pride and joy !

Each pic could have a short description of the bass as well (electronics config, pups installed, short history of the bass etc), though maybe I'm getting ahead of myself! LoL !

Look forward to hearing any more comments!

Nah, not really. People have got plenty of attachment space... or just use photobucket or something along those lines.

I thought the Gear Porn section was doing this? :)

Alternatively you could easily use the wiki for this, it has a full reference and search funtion. However part of the problem with any library is that it needs someone to organise the information so that searches deliver consistent results.

Modifying the site directly makes it difficult to update the forum software.

Hmm, youre most probably right Crazykiwi, thanks for your input :)

The only thing is that the wiki site doesn't seem very comprehensive, with only the Warwick Thumb for example under "Warwick" and a majority of the Fender Basses with no topics yet ! The gear porn section, although good, makes it hard to search for pictures as you have to either search for the member name or bass model (a problem if you cant remember it) and theres no option to search for finishes or configurations.

Maybe the idea could be integrated into the wiki site, but I'm not sure its very well advertised with only a small link in the top right of the home page. If it was made more accessible and people could it, use it and easily contribute to it by uploading pictures, I think it would be a really valuable resource .

I'm not really up on the technicalities regarding forum software updates or modifications, but I hope something can happen as I reckon people would enjoy showing off their beasts!

If this really is too tough to integrate, thats no problem, I was just wondering if it was technically possible to do it and gauge reaction to the idea

Thanks for all the replies guys, keep 'em coming !

I think the idea of using the wiki is a good one :)

Would it be possible to advertise the wiki a little better on the site?

It would also be awesome to make people aware of whats on the wiki site, especially the "vault" section. I wouldn't be surprised if some people are completely unaware the wiki section exists!

Can we possibly invite people to start posting their pics in the wiki? I dont know how long or how much effort this will take to do, but it would be pretty cool !

Thanks for all the comments!

Possibly I'm just being thick, but I can't see how the Wiki would provide a browsable gallery of pictures. I'm also totally put off by the mention of syntax. Really, life's too short.

What I envisage is somewhere I could upload a picture, tag it with keywords and provide some additional description. Then people can either browse the pictures till they find the one they want, or search using the tags. Which is what Photobucket, Flickr, Picassa etc already do, but not ideal because they're outside our control.

Just a point:

"Not to be confused with Goodfellow basses that may have been handmade by Bernie or may have been mass produced by Lowden after they ripped Bernie off"

Is this a fact or your opinion?

What if we did something like the link below.

This is by no means finished (I wrote it yesterday) It searches the flickr photo service for all photos with @basschat in the description, but also searches using the word(s) you enter. So, entering Fender will bring back all photos uploaded by basschat members - that's just me, but any of you could use this. You just need a flickr account, upload your picture, enter your description. enter @basschat as part of the description and make the photo public.

The categories section is currently a predefined keyword search - click on the Wal category. In theory, I could add an upload feature that allows you to tag photos with our predefined words - i.e. drop down lists for manufacturer, model, colour....I could then build this into the search.

Anyone interested?

Would this be embedded within the wiki or within flickr's own database?

The photos would be stored at the flickr website so anyone could easily upload to their own flickr account. The actual viewer could embedded within basschat and use the same colour scheme and theme as basschat...with the basschat moderators permission of course. In short, it could look and behave like a part of basschat, with storage at flickr.

Well, there's probably some merit to that suggestion if there's visual consistency. As far as my own personal preference goes, I'd probably prefer to have as much content tucked inside Basschat as possible. How much information and anecdotal background could be attached to the images? Would the images/associated text help Basschat's search engine rankings or Flickrs? :)

Bernie's opinion and backed up by his not rolling in money and not being able to use his own name.
