Its been a while and the neck I got made has arrived....and oh my its such a beauty! Here it is;

And in other news, when I applied the Rustins Plastic coating it seemed to react with the dye a little and made my burst...well not really a burst any more, so I did this....

I'm going to be starting again, but trying a different finish this time. Might keep it natural, or washed black dyed finish. or maybe something like the one attached. Any thoughts?

Yea I am tempted with just natural tru oil finish. :) I'm hoping to make a flame maple control cover instead of having a standard chrome plate. Might even dye that brown and sand that back as a bit of a contrast. Too many ideas....haha

And Alpher are making some remarkable instruments. Definitely ones to watch.

I finally bit the bullet and went for a sanded back black dye finish on my jazz. I will be leaving the back natural and applying true oil over the hold body. What do you think?

That's a shame about the RPC, its not something I've tried (yet) but I know some people get great results others less so. I'm still perfecting my rattle can spray techniques and I'm getting pretty close to a pro finish so I think I'll stick with this method. One thing, I always check with the supplier to make sure that all the elements of my finishes work together i.e. stains, sealers, paints and lacquers. There is a lot of contradictory mythology on the internet about what works and doesn't work so its best to check first. Having said all that, I am liking that sanded black finish and I recon it will look lush once its glossed.

By way of inspiration, here's a similar finish done by a local(ish) professional luthier.

The Plastic Coating worked and I had good results, I just wasn't happy with the dye finish I did. I'm much happier with the new finish. Yea, I read up a lot on what works with what, but its always best to test anyway. I've been told tru oil over dye usually causes it to run, but I will be testing it first. I may have to resort to spray cans if not. I've done a few spray can finishes with good results, so I'm ok with that.

Oh and thanks for the inspiration, thats a lovely looking bass. :)

Although I use truoil less now, I don't recall ever having the dye run or leach as long as it has properly soaked into the wood (which yours will have done or it would have all gone with the sanding!) and is fully dry. Try it first on a bit of scrap - but obviously make sure the dye is properly soaked in and dry before you apply the truoil.

Thanks for the advice. :) I did a test where the dye had been on for about an hour, And that didn't lift the dye, and my body has had it's dye ok for at least 24 hours.

I have applied the first layer of tru oil and the dye hasn't moved at all! It looks ace! Keep your eyes peeled for photos, didn't get a chance to take any, had to rush out. :)

Oh I've also orders some new pots etc for it, I'm going to try a passive Vol-Bal-Tone-series/parallel switch, then a side mounted jack.

Beautiful!

Thanks guys. :) I may buff the tru oil to a shine but I may leave it with the standard satin sheen, so it matches the finish on the neck.

That looks great. I agree with blablas about more shine.

This is not doing my Warmoth GAS any good...
[/quote]

Haha, Thanks.

I'm really pleased with it. To be honest, since this first coat, I've done about 6 coats and its got a bit more of a shine now. Not quite a gloss, but has a bit of a shine and I'm not sure I want a full gloss finish.

To be honest, I've never found that Tru-Oil ever does go what I would call 'full-gloss' - it always does have a slight satin look about it once it completely dries.

It's going to look a stunning bass when all assembled!

A little update. I got an East Mid sweep preamp off here from 'Mcnach' who was extremely helpful, and made sure it would fit before I bought it. Well thats been fitted with a little head scratching and a few emails to John East who drew me up a diagram so I can use it with my Vol/Bal/Tone setup. Top marks for customer service, he was so helpful and extremely helpful!

And now its pretty much complete, and the it sound awesome and feels so smooth to play. I'll be taking some better photos, but here are a couple of phone pics.
