Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Bass

Tried one in Wunjos yesterday in Denmark Street.
I also tried the Japanese Mustang and a Squier Jaguar for a short scale shoot out.

Didn't like the Jaguar.
Got on well with the Japanese Mustang, but very low output compared to the other two.

Really loved the Pawn Shop Mustang...and until I walked into the shop didn't even know it existed. Sound was more to my taste, and although it doesn't have a range of tones really, it does what it does very well. The only thing I disliked was the racing stripes.

As a cheaper alternative to my Status basses I am very close to cracking and buying one.

Anyone compared this to the Mikey Way Squier? It's got a decent humbucker. Would be interested to hear if the pawn shop version is worth the extra cash?

I have a Mikey way squier, i got it more for the way it looked than any other reason. It was ok out the box but not great. Pickup was weak, tone controle terible and a lot of fret buz. After a few tweaks on the nut and a general tighten up of most of the screws i had it feeling realy nice. i have modded it a bit now, EMG pickup and pots black nylon tape wound strings, a black pearl pick guard (made by me) and fender jaz bass controle knobs. All told it has cost me about £360 and i apsolutly love it now. It plays IMHO as good if not beter than any MIJ mustang ive tryed, the only thing on the fender that is any better is the finish of the neck but that is purly visual (gloss finish as aposed to mat finish on the squier) .

I have been and tryed the new pawn shop mustang too (im curently saving up for one) spent 2 hours in andertons in guilford trying lots of basses inc a couple of gibsons american and mex fenders . non of them came close to the pawnshop for finish feel and tone.

so to sum up i would say the MW squier is nice, sort it n mod it then its as good as any MIJ and with the rite pickup better tone too. (and i would be happy for anyone to a/b mine against an mij)

Played one of these today through an Eden WTB-700 at work and while is has a lovely profile neck i found it to be lacking somewhat in the high frequencies. I had to really tweak the eq to get the kind of tone i wanted. Plenty of bass as you'd expect from a short scale and boy does it look cool. Also close up the stripe was abit rough around the edges but hey, who gonna see that while your rocking out? Lovely bass to play not my thing though.
