dunnymod Posted July 19, 2012 Share Posted July 19, 2012 Hello everyone, just a quickie. Ive just picked up a Fender Jazz JB62 (which is lovely!!!) with the serial number P023208, "Crafted in Japan". Attempting to date the guitar online suggests that the P serial number was between 1993-1994, however it contradicts itself by saying only "crafted" models were made after 1996-1997. uncle psychosis Posted July 19, 2012 Share Posted July 19, 2012 I have absolutely no idea. What I do know, though, is that Fender Japan serial numbers don't always make sense. I used to have a CIJ telecaster (bought new, from a reputable shop) whose serial number seemed to contradict the info online, so its probably nothing to worry about. Crafted in Japan appeared exclusively between 96/97 and 2007/08, but CIJ instruments were being made from about '92. An exception was with signature and some reissue basses, which often had MIJ on the headstock but CIJ stamped on the heel. MIJ made a return in 2008. Tokai (CIJ) is known to have produced serial numbers commencing "P". MIJ is used, under contract, by FujiGen and CIJ is used by the other factories, Dyna Gakki and Tokai, producing for Fender Japan. As far as I'm aware the online dating resourcing for Fender Japan are not definitive, as not all the batching of serial numbers has been included. Remember, there have been times when all three factories have been producing concurrently, using not dissimilar serial number formulations. That throws up some rogues. [/quote] Rather confusingly Fender Japan have been recycling some of their serial numbers, so whether it's CIJ or MIJ makes a difference (that's why that serial number dater website always asks where it was made). But to confuse things further the return of MIJ and the reuse of the prefixes has made things rather more tricky, especially with recent T and U serials. All recent MIJ's begin T/U 0 + 5 digits. noelk27 Posted July 19, 2012 Share Posted July 19, 2012 Yes, first point it all got a bit confused was '92, when FujiGen sub-contracted work to Dyna Gakki, as FujiGen had closed one of its old facilities for refurbishment/expansion, and didn't have capacity. Dyna Gakki used a different methodology for serial numbers, and also used the first version of the Crafted in Japan mark. When FujiGen was back to full capacity the sub-contract with Dyna Gakki ended, and the CIJ mark disappeared. In '96, when FujiGen had the opportunity to renew the Fender Japan/Kanda Shokai contract it didn't, as it had acquired a massive contract from Gibson. Thereafter Kanda Shokai engaged Dyna Gakki and Tokai, and the CIJ mark returned. At that time Kanda introduced a revised serial numbering system, also attempting to standardise the serial numbering of Squier product. Jump forward to 2007, when the next contract renewal time arrived again, and FujiGen again acquired a share of the production, the MIJ mark returned. There's some great information in this thread, many thanks to everyone. I have a CIJ Precision with a P + 5 digit number which I've assumed was a 99-02 . dunnymod Posted July 23, 2012 Author Share Posted July 23, 2012 So I took the neck off this weekend to have a look see what was stamped, at it had a rather confusing "015-008" with no date stamp. Looking up different info over the weekend I now believe that its part of the CIJ series dated 1999-2002. A positive aspect is it appears to be a non export one with the american pickups!!!! And I now have a rosewood fingerboard to finally try out some lemon oil, see if its all its cracked up to be. A positive aspect is it appears to be a non export one with the american pickups!!!![/quote] Not a Fender Japan expert, by any measure, but if it's non-export that should mean it was made by Tokai, but aren't the pickups made by Gotoh (that's the Gotoh in Nagano, not the lot that make the hardware), using American moulds and to American standards, but are actually MIJ?
