Haydenr25 Posted July 3, 2012 Share Posted July 3, 2012 In my main band we do mainly covers, and have decided to have a go at two Oasis songs, ''Hello'' and ''I hope, I think, I know'' (links are below). We get through them easily enough, but at the end of each, our guitarist/vocalist takes a guitar solo. We've never really had a problem with sounding thin, but whenever he stops the open chords and starts the lead it just really drops out. We're doing the usual things, lots of open hi-hats and heavy cymbal usage, digging into the bass line, not just pumping out root notes. It's only with these songs we are struggling with the sound. Lozz196 Posted July 3, 2012 Share Posted July 3, 2012 It will do if you don`t have a rhythm guitar, as you`re used to hearing it the original way, so it`s natural to make the comparison. They were a very "wall of guitars" band, so just a lead line over bass and drums will sound very empty compared to the recordings. Without knowing your individual set-ups, certainly some delay on the guitar will help pad the sound out. As maybe will some thickening, but not too driven overdrive on the bass. KevB Posted July 4, 2012 Share Posted July 4, 2012 I've done occasional oasis covers in jams or with a band with only 1 guitar and it's not easy, as has been said they tended to put a lot of guitar layers on the recordings and had plenty of guitars on stage for live work. There are things like the Akai Unibass but ideally that needs to be routed through a separate amp & cab for full effect. Other alternative might be midi pedals triggering a synth guitar sound while yer man solos away. Either way you'll get the short straw and will need more gear, more expense. highwayone Posted July 4, 2012 Share Posted July 4, 2012 I'm in an Oasis tribute and if we ever rehearse without a 2nd guitar it sounds terrible! very empty and thinned out. Noel Gallagher wrote the individual parts to create a 'wall of sound' so individually they're cack but collectively still cack imo!!! but a fuller cack tell him to leave the solo's alone!!! Haydenr25 Posted July 5, 2012 Author Share Posted July 5, 2012 Someone asked for a list of gear, so hear it is: Me(bass): Carlsbro 65watt amp Precision bass guitar Woolly mammoth clone fuzz pedal NYC big muff Guitarist and vocalist: Cruiser les paul Marshall 100watt amp (forgot the model) Vocal amplification (forgot brand/model) ZVEX fuzz factory (borrowed from me for practice sessions) Delay pedal Drummer: Fairly standard kit: snare, two rack toms, floor tom, bass drum, crash and ride cymbal, hi-hat Bearing in mind the guitarist has a 100watt amp in comparison to my 65watt bass amp, it is running nowhere near full volume, we set everything around the drummer's volume Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
