Looking to upgrade the circuitry on my new bass. Ive not done this before so any recommendations? Its a four control set-up atm, but the pots are noisy and seem to do very little. Its on a samick 6er.

Cheers, bit of a noob to circuitry.

I play mainly rock and metal and bought mainly so i could attempt dream theater :)

Cue the standard plug for Artec preamps/EQ. Inexpensive for a first punt at upgrading. These would be suitable for your 4 hole needs (assuming this is a 2 pickup bass)

SE2 - 2 band EQ (blend, master volume, bass, treble)
SE3A - 3 band EQ (blend, master volume, mid freq, bass/treble on concentric pot)
SE3PA - 3 band parametric EQ (blend, master volume, mid/freqency on concentric pot, bass/treble on concentric pot)

You can get some of them from Thomann, but you'll have to have a hunt about for the SE3(P)A. The SE2 is about £25.

Note to mods: this probably belongs in Repairs & Tech forum.
Hmm, i werent quite sure where to put it myself. What kinda sound do you get out of these?
I have used a couple of them now (an SE2 in my 2007 project build and an SE2-A in my OLP MM3). Like the tech specs say, 12dB boost/cut at the stated frequencies.

What that translates into is a pretty wide range of sounds. I used the SE2 with an SD stingray style humbucker at the neck end and a SE Jazz Quarter Pounder at the bridge. I can make anything from deep, muddy tones (all bass on the stingray) to some pretty twangy stuff (all treble on the jazz).

Must get around to recording some sound clips.

Depends how much you want to spend...

IMO the only active circuit I would entertain in any of my basses now would be the ACG filter one.

However if you did want something more conventional have a look the what John East has to offer.

+1. Or the EBS preamp V-P-T-B. If you fit a cheap circuit you have a cheap circuit on whatever standard of bass you have. Not sure about Samick but probably not ultra budget so would benefit from better that ultra budget actives.

Two things I have learned during my long and varied life.

If something is too good to be true then it is not true. A £25 pre-amp that sounds as good as a £150 pre-amp. Not true.

You get what you pay for.

You wont find me extolling the virtues of SX and Squier VM basses. They are very good budget basses and if £200 is all you have then buy one. But if I had £2000 to spend I would get a GB, Shuker etc etc. Oh I did.

This is most definately not a budget bass :) I believe the retail new is in the region of $1000 via my research. Looking at upto £100. Also considering a pickup mod. It plays well, and has the ability to sound gr8 too (altho atm i have to fiddle extensively on my amp to alter eq) just want to make it all it can be (and with f#kd eq thats impossible)

Here's the ubiquitous plug for an Audere preamp. They come prewired and are a breeze to fit.

You may wish to drill acoupleof smalls holes in the body for the Z-mode switch and battery diagnostic LED, but I it's worth it for a preamp that will make a huge difference to quality of your sound.
