phoenix555 Posted November 29, 2011 Share Posted November 29, 2011 Yoo, I've read on some forums that people can get a crunchy sound out of their marshall JCM 800 bass(1992 model) Its been told to crank up your master volume somewhere from 7 to 10. But I haven't found that crunchy sound despite turning the volume up and playing with the knobs. I use 3 preamp 12AX7 no name tubes and 4 sovtek tubes. Any advice or maybe a demo? [/quote] Na, I stupidly sold one of those beauties a few years back. Natural crunch it dont do. They need something infront of it. paul_5 Posted November 30, 2011 Share Posted November 30, 2011 (edited) Either a) distortion pedal (the Dave Hall VT1, Ashdown distortion plus etc... would be favourite, or a bass tube screamer is designed to push valves into 'breaking up') some sort of boost pedal to make the valves sweat a bit harder c) or you could sell it and get an Ampeg! [/quote] Try some different valves, sovteks tend to sound pretty fizzley in the high end when overdriven and so do the no name chinese jobbies. I sold it because I had some rather inefficient speakers and couldn't really get anything out of that would cut through that wasn't all high gain.
