Bilbo Posted May 16, 2011 Author Share Posted May 16, 2011 I went to far this month . I downloaded some massive recordings by Anthony Braxton, Old and New Dreams and Keith Jarrett. The Braxton stuff is really tough going. It is very abstract and I listened to 90 minutes (half?) of it before I had to give it a rest. I then went onto a live cd by 'Old and New Dreams', an Ornette Coleman 'tribute' band featuring Charlie Haden, Don Cherry, Dewey Redman and Ed Blackwell, whcih was also pretty free although much more accessable. I am now listenting to Keith Jarrett's 'Sunbear Concerts', a 6 cd boxed set of live improvisations that is also pretty intense. I am 4 hours in and not even half way there yet. I think I need to go lie down in a dark room! [/quote] Might I also recommend the truly amazing, and probably my favourite group of all time: Nik Bartsch's Ronin. Saw them live in Manchester last year and got to meet the band. Incredible musicianship and immaculate groove masters! Typical Flecktones,so in my opinion-great. Gerald Veasley 'Velvet'. It's very 'smooth jazz' in places. It's good,but not his best. Marcus Miller 'Tutu Revisited'. A 2 CD/DVD live package of Marcus and his band doing all the tunes from Miles' 'Tutu',plus a few more. Features Christian Scott on Trumpet. Excellent. Double bass with strings - kind of jazz/third stream - its passes perilously close to Radio 3 on occasion but I like it. His bass is beautifully recorded. He is not the most advanced or sophisticated DB player in the world but he plays some lovely lines here. Jam Posted May 31, 2011 Share Posted May 31, 2011 I'm a bit new to the Jazz thing but have recently been taking lessons with a local bass teacher who specialises in Jazz (and also double bass) and it's really opened my eyes. I can feel it improving my playing, and I understand more and more about theory too. I've been working on Autumn Leaves and Song for my Father. That song has such groove! I used to knock Jazz when I was younger (though I still don't get "Free Jazz"...) but I have a newfound respect for it, and a hunger for more now! Been a steep learning curve on the Stagg ( even though some of the tunes are not really jazz) but very enjoyable playing with a good jazz Guitarist. We did save "Isn't She Lovely" to the end as the Bride went past us into the Marquee ( we were playing in a "Tent" outside). Here's our set list, lots of songs chosen for their relevance...
