1.
So you basically want a passive instead of active then? Have you ever played the mid 90s fender deluxe jazz basses?
Yep - passive or the option of active /passive would be nice. You managed to say in one small sentence what took me a paragraph to say :-) I have been told that I can waffle! Never tried a mid 90's deluxe. Heard good things though especially about the Suhr pups.
 2.
Sorry for the dopey pm your in Bolton I'm in Manchester - good start. But why oh why would you want to swap for a us standard?? I just don't understand...
Yep - seems strange but i've got serious GAS for a standard US Jazz. I've never owned one and when I started playing bass 33 years ago I started on a Satellite Jazz copy. Always wanted the real thing. When I could afford one, I went for the deluxe as, to me, it was a step on from a standard. I've since acquired a EBMM 25th Anniversary that does the active sound really well (as does the deluxe) so I thought a nice passive Jazz would give me another tonal flavour and it would also fulfill my youthful ambition. I also really like the newer (2008-on) jazzes. The quality seems to be spot-on and I like the high mass bridge etc. A 2012 model with the CS pickups would be even better. If this doesn't sell, I won't be upset. I is a beautiful instrument. I may rip out the active pre-amp and replace it with an East J-retro deluxe that has the active/passive switch giving me the best of both worlds. I've just bought an East J-Retro to install in my MIM fretless (again the choice of active/passive is a big plus for me). Still probably doesn't make much sense but in my mind it is completely clear. Well apart from the pre Erniee Ball Stingray that has just gone up for sale, and maybe an ACG or an Overwater...............
 3. Anyone tried them? How do they sound? Not much info on't tinterwebnet. cheers.
 4. Don't think i've seen one of these in better condition - just stunning.
 5.
6 hours after I agreed a deal on something else , I'm lucky like that. It will go soon enough, these are marvellous basses, light, very powerful, comfortable to play and a massive tonal range. GLWTS, Karl.
Yep - I'm with Karl here, a real tone machine that just sits really well in any mix. Price means this is a bit of a bargain as well! Someone will get a cracking bass here!
 6.
I'm still awaiting the birth of DrumChat.co.uk, confidant that it would be as useful to British a nd European drummers as BassChat is to bassists.
I'm also looking forward to this - are we starting them off on colours or numbers?
 7. Keep on playing. If it is a big obvious cock-up that the audience couldn't fail to notice, then at the end of the song, announce that that was the Jazz version of (insert song name here)! Usually gets a laugh from both band and audience alike and helps break the ice! Alternatively, look at the drummer and point whilst shaking your head (irrespective of who's fault it was).
 8. I'm going away to foreign shores with no access to basschat until Sunday 14th April type bump.
 9. Thanks Discreet - i'll go back and give it another go. Thanks for your help.
 10. OK - so I wrote a description of a bass I would like to sell yesterday, added photos etc and clicked the post button fully prepared to be directed to the paypal site to pay my £20. I was indeed directed there but the system had put in a fixed amount of £40 that I could not edit. When I went back to the basschat site it listed the costings as free (up to £50), £7 if selling one item over £50 and £20 for unlimited selling. Then I noticed the £20 actually stated £20+. So, the £20+ in my case was £40. That's a hell of a +. Am I missing something?
 11.
I can't give you an exact weight just yet, i'll weigh it tonight. It feels very light to me and the balance both on and off the strap is perfect. It is a very comfortable bass.
OK just weighed the bass on the digital kitchen scales and it's coming out at 8lb 6oz. For those watching in colour, this converts to 3.8kg.
 12.
Does this have the active/passive switch? What's the weight? Thanks!
Hi xroads - this just runs in active mode as it's a 2009 model. The newer 2010 model has the active/passive switch. I can't give you an exact weight just yet, i'll weigh it tonight. It feels very light to me and the balance both on and off the strap is perfect. It is a very comfortable bass.
 13. Not bumped this for a while First post edited for price drop.
 14. I have just bought a fretless Jazz bass from Steve (Outspoon) and I could not have wished for a smoother transaction. I made the decision to buy the bass on a Tuesday morning and it was with me by the Thursday lunchtime (posted by Royal Mail). Packaging was bombproof. The bass is as awesome as Steve described. I was expecting to have to buy a gigbag to house the bass but Steve included one for me 'as extra packaging'. Communication was prompt and courteous. In short, I cannot recommend Steve highly enough. He represents all that is great about Basschat. Thanks again Steve.
 15. So, it at the deep end then eh? OK - I love a challenge :-)
 16. Some great advice again folks and this really has given me a lot to think about. Thanks for all your responses. I've got a few potential basses in mind that I think would suit my needs ranging from the budget range i.e. Squire, through the medium priced MIJ/CIJ and on to the more expensive Stingray or Tony Franklin Precision. I figure that if I can buy secondhand for a reasonable price, it doesn't really matter whether I go for the budget end or the more expensive, I'll never lose too much on a re-sale if this doesn't work out. Think I prefer the look of unlined but may be sensible to go for the safety net of a lined board. This is a nice problem to have and I'm enjoying the hunt for the right bass. Cheers all. I'll keep you informed as to where I end up with this - with photos of course (or else it didn't happen).
 17. Guys, this is brilliant - thanks to all of you for your contributions. Within half an hour of posting this thread, I have had offers to try basses owned by three members that are all local to me - that's the power of basschat and a testiment to the caliber of people that we have on here, so Paul 5, ead and Lord Sausage, thank you. I'm getting the strong message to leave my current basses alone and buy a dedicated fretless. It would be nice to buy a fretless neck for my Jazz, but as it is a deluxe, I can't seem to find one for sale that would fit (I believe that the deluxe necks are longer than a standard Jazz neck as they have a smaller body - i'm also not sure about the neck pocket sizing). Steve-bbb, I ride motorbikes and have full protection provided by Dainese leathers and Arai Helmets - lightweight too so handy for running away :-) Think I need to try out a CIJ Jazz. EAD, i've been looking at photos of the black one in the Manchester bass lounge (your old one?) and it is a very nice looking bass and I think that this may suit my needs perfectly. Phil and Conan, it sounds like bright flatwounds would be preferable to roundwounds? Is there a particular brand that either of you could recommend? Thanks again to all, this really is very helpful.
 18. Hmmmm........ I fancy having a go at playing fretless. I'm particularly interested in playing rock type stuff on it ala Tony Franklin - i.e. not restricting myself to ballards or jazz but playing stuff that kicks-bottom. So, that'll be roundwounds then! I like classic shaped basses (Jazz, Precision, Stingray etc). Question is, what shall I do about acquiring the right bass? I currently own two cracking 4 string fretted basses (EBMM 25th and a Fender Jazz USA Deluxe). The options as I see them are to:

buy a quality (i.e. expensive) fretless bass (probably secondhand so that I won't lose too much if I don't take to it)
buy a cheapish fretless bass (again, not losing too much as it would be cheap to start with)
convert one of my existing basses (probably the Jazz) to fretless
trade/sell one of my existing basses for a fretless
If I go for options one or two, do you have any recommendations? If I go for option three, would you convert the existing (rosewood) board by ripping out the frets and filling in the gaps or would you replace the board with a new (ebony) one? Any recommendations for a good luthier who could carry out this work - i'm in the North West? John Shuker springs to mind. For any of the above options would you choose lined or unlined? Also, is ebony the best bet for minimising wear using roundwounds? If so, does it need to be coated. Sorry for all the questions - just can't make my mind up which way to go with this. I'd be sorry to lose one of my existing basses, but I can only play one at once (or so the wife keeps telling me). Have I covered all the various options or have I missed anything? Cheers Guys
