1. Wals sound like Wal basses. A few other basses sound similar too. A Wal does sound unique, but you could also do a Justin Chancellor and slather it in effects so much that it could be any bass he is playing! If you want to hear the Wal sound without too much interference, check out Power Windows or Hold Your Fire by Rush, or some old Jonas Hellborg videos on Youtube, he often used Wal basses in the 80's and early 90's.
2.
Radiate - Enter Shikari, love the heavy electronic synth intro and is a lot like their older stuff
That takes me back! I had completely forgotten about Enter Shikari. At the time I thought they were hopeless posh boys, but one of my mates learned the guitar part to Jonny Sniper, so I learned the bass part and we used to jam to it. I always quite liked that song despite being quite embarrassed to admit it. Some of it is quite naff, but some of the parts where the guitar is picking out those little lines with the bass driving beneath it, and the lockup between the guitars and the drums...are actually quite good! I was considering this gem last night, from a time before 36 Crazyfists started turning out albums of hokey rubbish. Atmosphere, groove, this has it all. That delay sound on the guitars give this such a massive, desolate feel. It has that touch of Alaska to it! 3.
I'm genuinely interested to find out what you consider worthwhile and of acceptable 'merit'.
I have been enjoying this tune lately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln6R3Neb9iI
4.
Most of that is very funny, but Trent Reznor claiming that Marilyn Manson will 'cross any line of decency' must've forgotten that he was famous for the line 'I want to #### you like an animal'.
Just comes off as a jealous whining tart, given that Manson was not only quite astute in masterminding his own meteoric rise to popularity. Of course, after Holywood Manson went creatively bankrupt and fell from grace just as quick as he went up. But Reznor never offered anything of merit so he is hardly well placed to criticise Manson.
5. Suffice to say I would also trade this for a Carvin Allan Holsdworth Fatboy guitar, if anyone has one...!
6.
Cobain had Guns and Roses about right...the nadir of bad hair metal.
He's one to talk though, Nirvana were just as crap as GNR.
7. I don't know who Mark E Smith is but he seems to have the measure of Mumford and Sons. What a sh*t band.
8. I should listen rather than skipping straight to that fantastic playing!
9. I wasn't aware Modulus had ever made a headless bass, aside from the old Steinberger cricket bat copy thing.
10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrawLGsrEbg Some tasty playing, but what is that bass? I'm looking at it but I can't work it out. My best bet is a Clover or a Schack perhaps? Some great pick playing in this tape too.
11.
Had been based up in Harrogate but under 20% of sales were coming from an area loosely attributable to 'the north'
We're all tightfisted up here!
12. Whilst we're looking at old Status basses, here was my Series II...
13.
The main groove is transcribed here: http://basslessons.b...ptions.php?i=31 - looks good to me. And yes it's harder than it sounds!
It's a relatively simple line, but syncing it up to the mechanically tight standard of the record is the real challenge!
14. Doesn't the Series 3000 have a wooden neck with a black lacquer over it? I'm pretty sure it does...
15.
Off to amazon to get WTTPD on cd.
You'd be better off just downloading the best tracks, as mentioned earlier, there is some pap on that record too!
16. The biggest shame is that Jan used to have a few videos of him on youtube, wherein he was just sitting at home playing some cool stuff on his Kubicki, the tone was incredible. I've just searched for them now and sadly they seem to have been taken down.
17. As slaptastic as I'm sure it is, I'm looking for more strings than this 5'er has on it!
18. That headstock design is very elegant and sexy.
19. Very nice! I had a similar Series II from 1987, it was a real beauty! The best basses Status have ever made.
20. Everyone has good and bad days, be they either consciously 'bad' or just not quite on form. Even the pro players have them and would tell you as such, so don't worry too much about this.
21.
Great I'll know where not to go avoid all the tedious arguments about string thickness, single coils vs humbuckers, real amps vs simulators, modern vs "vintage" guitars, "shredders" vs "bloos " players what make of 9v batteries to use in your effects pedals to get so-and-so's exact tone.
Yes, you can come here for the fresh and scintillating arguments we have here: * What bass for metal? * Jazz or Precision? * Active or passive? * Flea or Mark King? * Can this bass be used for...
22. When Kubicki went 'Fender', things didn't really change as much as was once thought. Before Phil made a deal with Fender, you could only buy instruments direct from him, which was great if you knew what you wanted but not so good if you just wanted to try one. The Fender deal was really a marketing exercise, as it allowed Phil to utilise Fender's massive dealer network and get his basses into stores with some financial backing from Fender. Nothing else really changed, except the electronics were modified (to a 9v circuit, and some of the preset positions on the preamp were deleted) and the back of the headstock got the Fender Custom Shop stamp. I prefer the 18v circuit, but the 'Fender' basses are still fantastic. Models go as follows: 1) Original, early run basses 2) Crossover basses - starting in 1989, made with the 18v preamp but getting the FCS stamp, I believe these were the first batch brought to the UK - both the Ex Factors I have owned have been crossover basses 3) Fender era basses 4) post Fender basses appearing from 1994 onwards - no longer distributed by Fender and back with the 18v preamp.
23. How do you just stumble across a Pangborn like that? They're as rare as a clean sheet in a nursing home!
