I listened to this the other day, interesting. Is there any story behind the Wal? I always associate Wal double necks with Jonas Hellborg!

Thumb bass is weak in the second octave
Chris2112 replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Repairs and Technical
Could just be the bass itself and the way you perceive it? My Warwick Thumb sounded a bit like that (albeit not as apparent and lacking in punch). It had so much power and presence in the low mids that the upper registers sounded a little flat by comparison. Certainly nothing to stop you soloing on it, but the design of the bass meant that this was an inherent characteristic. -
The one you wish you'd never EVER sold...
Aw man, that thing was an animal... remember giving it a blast in my garage? If I remember correctly, a shelf fell off the wall or something
This sounds class! The one I wish I hadn't sold is my 1989 Kubicki Ex Factor, #1777. I traded it for a Status Stealth bass which was good but nowhere near as good as the Kubicki. The Kubicki then came up for sale on the boards for £550 a few weeks later, I was so skint I couldn't buy it back! -
Bartolini and Delano would be the obvious choices but they will end up altering the tone of the bass.
Gah! I wish you'd shifted a few miles east and met in my shop in Hexham! Could have had a little meeting of the Grafts.
Bugger me! Wish I'd known we could have met in Hexham for the sale, saying as my satnav directed me the wrong way off the A69 and got me lost!

Great for a bit of buget Mark King action! I can quite imagine how good this will sound. I had a Status Matrix bass with singlecoil pickups and the same peamps as this. It had a Walnut body, but I'm sure they will sound fairly similar. Lots of Status growl and pop but in a slightly more subtle way, and could easily slot in to a gig where you'd used a jazz bass without too much fuss. A nice option for someone who fancies a Status but finds the typical old skool S2's to be too aggressive sounding (not me though, I love them like that). -
Just bought an ACG Harlot bass from Peter today. Met halfway in Haltwistle, and Peter even found me when my sat nav broke and I ended up lost! Great bloke, even brought along his ACG Graft bass for me to have a look in the flesh. I'd absolutely do business with Peter again!

Cheers, Peter! Loving the bass, a true "revelation" type moment of which I've not had for quite a while with a bass!

For Sale / For Trade: Tanglewood Baron Bass

If you don't go down the East route, a Bartolini preamp and pickups will produce an incredible tone.

Is it an ash bodied Corvette though?

It would have to be my 1989 Kubicki Ex Factor. I've yet to find anything that looks, plays or sounds as good as it. It's dependable, and always sounds great. Since I spend most of my time in the studio now, not playing live, I can afford to look after it too. Its one of those absses that you know, whatever you need from it you'll get it!

This bass is now sold. Steff has just been to pick the bass up and quite frankly blew me away with a spot on fretless rendition of "The Chicken" while he was here! I can only take my hat off to Steff, he has been a true gent and has travelled the length of the country today at leass than 16 hrs notice to collect the bass. He seems to love it though and I suppose I can ask for little more than that, I've got what I paid for the bass and he's got a good deal and a bass that he'll be able to make great use of. So that closes another chapter in the life of this bass, what an absolute gem it has been. Thanks again to everyone who sent PM's asking about the bass and I apologise if I haven't answered every one of them.
I've played Warwicks for 20 odd years and despite dabbling with a multitude of other basses I always come back to Warwick; in particular the NT Streamers (the earlier the better)... my Corvette/Infinette comes a close 2nd. A couple of recent GAS purchases have reinforced that I'm sticking to my Warwick (i.e. they are up for sale), though I'll still admire other basses.
That Zon is just out of this world!

Why don't bass companies do sound samples of their basses..
Chris2112 replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
I think its a great idea. You can assume that the sounds will never be more than a "ball park" kind of approximation of what the basses like, but it's nice to have something rather than nothing! For instance, check out the sound clips of the Kubicki I'll link below. These have been on the Kubicki website for ages and are played by Vail Johnson, who has used Kubicki basses for years. They give a good idea of what a Kubicki sounds like out of the box through a fairly transparent preamp. But even then, I can see how basses can sound different next to each other. My first Kubicki Ex Factor sounded closer to this sound than the one I have now does, and they were played through the same amp with the same strings. http://www.kubicki.com/player.php clip 9 is rather good. The Kubicki I have now sounds a lot more like the one in the clip below. Funny, as both basses are 1989 models with Fender custom shop stamps and are part of the few "crossover" models that have the custom shop stamp but were assembled in the original shop with the original staff and parts. -
I used to have a Squier VMJ fretless and whilst it was well put together I really longed for it to have a thicker sound with more midrange. It came off sounding a bit thin and clangy, but it was still very useable.

Well, I could always change my mind but I don't really think I can in these circumstances. I can afford to keep the Alembic, but I'd rather not. It would spend more time in it's case than it should, when there are clearly many people who would really enjoy it on a regular basis. If I could have afforded to do so, I'd have kept all my past basses, including the Status, Spector, Warwick, Kubicki basses etc etc. All of these sold or traded for more basses! I'm a bit of collector as you'll know Ovi, and it's nice to look back and say "I owned this and that". I'm sure someone will love this Alembic like I do, and it'll be well played!
